The Japanese versions of games are the main version. The localizations (NA or EU versions) are just derivative versions.
>but anon, games were IMPROVED for their western release!
No, they often had the difficulty lowered because western gamers are babies. Like Mega Man 2, which was made easier but you guys still claim it's hard. And some games did the opposite and increased the difficulty because of the rental market. The only way to get the true intended experience is to play the original.
>But the western versions fixed bugs!
They also introduced tons of them. Translating games back then was basically hacking them because text characters were graphical elements and not actual text, so translations often introduced bugs that weren't in the originals.

They also censored the living shit out of everything. Graphics, dialogue, everything. And if we're talking about NES games, they have worse audio too because of missing sound hardware. Yeah that's right, if you played Zelda, Castlevania, Metroid, Kid Icarus, etc, than you got the shitty version with gimped music.
>but [developer] said they like the English version better and they used the English script to make changes in the original
No they didn't
>ywnbj
Try responding to what was said
>but I like my shitty localization
You like shit?
>why is Doraemon fat?
He let himself go after 20 years of bed breaking sex with shizuka-chan

Obviously this doesn't apply to American games. I say this is obvious but there will still be at least one retard who says it if I don't.
>>
Working Designs outperformed the original developer.

Gamers are very concerned, as we are, that the original game stay intact as much as possible. We really try hard to give the American gamer the same experience the Japanese gamer had when playing the original game. In reality, we meet, and sometimes exceed, the quality of the original Japanese game.

The Japanese version of Doom is the main version?

Famicom Maniac Mansion sucked, though. LucasArts decided to make a new version from scratch than localize it.

wrong more games had their shit cranked up because of video game rentals look at castlevania 3
>>
>>12479087
wrong, that's an urban myth. some games got easier in the US version, some harder. it was mainly based on player feedback from Japan if they thought the game was too easy or too hard.

The Japanese release is a revised version with bugfixes. Refer to the first 2 points you made in the OP.

fuck, that. i patch the game to have 3 hits and infinite continues.

Not him but I totally agree. I'm replaying Lunar 2 right now and it's difficulty is still perfect. Dungeons actually test you, you have to pay attention to enemy animations and take out the ones about to pull off their dangerous attacks and bosses usually drain your resources. They balanced it perfectly so that by exploring each area or dungeon you come to will be challenging but require no grinding at all and the boss at the end usually nearly kicks your ass but you can win if you pay attention and play smartly. My first time through the final battle woth Zophar ended with my whole party dead except Hiro who ran out of all healing and starlights, in the red of health but won with a final regular sword attack. Boss battles don't get any better than that.

If you actually wanna decide things for yourself, just visit The Cutting Room Floor and see exactly what makes each version of a game different, including revisions. Then play them for yourself and go with the variant you like most. They're games, not holy relics. Do whatever the fuck you want.

>they often had the difficulty lowered because western gamers are babies
Most of the time the US version is actually the harder one. You do have a few exceptions like MM2 adding the easier "Normal" difficulty, and SMB3, but most of the time there's a difficulty change, the US version is harder
Castlevania 3, Ninja Gaiden 3, Bayou Billy, Contra: Hard Corps, Streets of Rage 3, the original US release of Resident Evil, and every other retro Resident Evil are all harder in the US than in Japan
