Doom crushers, love 'em or hate 'em?As a feature that can easily kill you for making a single mistake, and one that's used often just to be a dick to the player, you could easily grow to not like them. But it can also introduce strategy to an encounter in a way damaging floors can't. That's to say I think I'm not a huge fan myself, I'd rather have a death pit.Any funky ideas for crusher usage? WADs that do it well?
>>12535227Based.

>>12535360that's cool progress
>>12535360oh shit, good luck anon. Once the you get the muscle memory and move past the beginner mistakes that can fuck up the map it'll get better. If you got trouble drop your questions here, I will try to help whenever I can
>>12535261Crushers can be thought of as ~70hp or ~1000hp (i.e. fatal) damage sectors with visible timingKnown crushers are okay I guess, bit irritating to have one's movement restricted, but otherwise they're not too different to damaging floors in gameplay terms, at least in the way I look at them as a playerSurprise crushers are annoying especially if they are the deadly kind (in which case they essentially act as a recent savegame check) but the fast ones that take 60 or 70% off your health can be "fun" to give the player a scare (especially if you can be reasonably sure he can survive one round of compression) -- the amount of damage is comparable to a successfully landed archvile attackEntice the player with a soulsphere, but make it so unless he is unusually nimble (or forewarned, on a second playthrough) hit him for 70 health when he touches it -- he still comes away 30% better off than he started, but he won't be trying that again in a hurry...
>>12535261I love it when they kill archvile or cyberdemon turrets.

I finished setting up DOSBox-X and I had to start with Doom of course. I have novert and Gravis Ultrasound working. This is absolute peak gaming.
>>12535775Check out FastDOOM while you're at it. It has novert by default, some pretty crazy video modes including some using text characters, and just more options in general. It's also more optimized than the original exe as the name implies, so you could even get some relatively playable framerates on a 386 by tweaking some of the options:https://github.com/viti95/FastDoom

>>12535910>>12536041I’ll add these:>Tower of Shrakitha>Project Zephon>Deja Vu: Gryphon RevisitedI’d also recommend Return to Na Pali Ultimate Edition over the original expansion, it adds in levels that were cut from the base game and ditches the voice over scenes to make it feel more like the seamless, vanilla campaign.Project Xenome got updated as well, plays like Unreal with more UT weapons.
>>12536074Aren't Zephon and Xenome for UT, not U1?
>>12536086Pretty much, but for Zephon you wouldn’t know from looking at or playing it: It uses all Unreal assets - the weapons, the hud, the enemies, and controls just like the original Unreal. Unreal Gold itself is basically the original game plugged into the UT engine, and if you’re feeling kind of nutty you can even load a lot of UT mods through Gold.
>>12536074>Project Xenome got updated as well, plays like Unreal with more UT weapons.I was amazed at the number of GoldSrc areas in the first act. Even had the Kata-Space Anchor setpiece from Gunman Chronicles.
>>12536026My biggest gripes are the projectile weapons are useless against dodging enemies, and it gets way too dark in interior spaces.I don't miss Quake II's repeating enemy jumpscare placements however, or brown-castle-sewer levels. I will get to Quake 64 after.
>>12536112The dodging enemies aren’t too good at dodging hitscan, and you get two solid hitscan weapons near the start of the campaign.
>>12536112>the projectile weapons are useless against dodging enemiesTheir dodge AI is worse at indirect fire than it is at direct fire. Eightball grenades, flak shells, GES blobs will all get you hits where direct rockets won't.

>>12536791>doesn't look like doom engine>gorgeousLooks like you don't want Doom wad.
>>12536112The trick to Unreal's enemies isn't to prevent them from dodging, but to get them to dodge where you want them to be. If you get the angles right, you can consistently fool a Skaarj into rolling in the path of your shots, or right into knockback damage and off of a ledge.
"So anyway, this is why we need a ballroom."DC is fun, but the path forward can be obscure as all hell. It is time for strong men to create a WAD that rebukes all the troonworld and trooner boards slop. A WAD that will ignite the Roman fire inside you. Only real men would be permitted to play this WAD. Doom is not a game for women or faggots, but for strong men who know that their place is at the top and wish to use their power to dominate weaklings. Men such as me.My ideas for this WAD:* You must provide a DNA test, a blood sample, and a picture of your face to start the game. The game will close if you do not meet the requirements. I highly doubt many of you will be permitted to play my game.* The WAD will celebrate strength and inner power only. No weapons or armor or items. You only use your fists.* A fatality system better than any game that has come before. The demons/humans will be unaltered from their base (except for former humans who are replaced with living UAC soldiers of both sexes), but instead of killing him quickly you tackle him to the floor and force your 12 inch long penis into him, this restores your health to full. The demon/human will remain alive after your domination, but will walk around listlessly and will not even recognize your presence. You may even perform a fatality on a demon or human multiple times. Because there will be no items in the game, you must do this a lot to gain health.* Hell will be described as being "in the East".* My manifesto will be included with the game.If I finish this WAD there won't be any need for anyone to create any more games.

What's the best ways to play Wolf3D, Quake 2/3 and the Unreals? The pastebin doesn't really mention them. Also, is there like, a good launcher or something for Doom wads or the like? It's a bit annoying having to select the iwad and then pwad every time, I'd rather be able to save each configuration as game profiles or something, if that makes sense? Controller support would be nice too. If this exists for Quake and the like too, that'd also be very nice.

>>12536791Best looking wads imo are those that throw a shit ton of decoration sprites everywhere. Like Build games, but making it even more intense. All kinds of grass, flowers, hydrants, signs, posters, arcs, and whatever else. Using billboard sprites like this is a very strong part of aestethics even by modern standards when you think of it deeper and realize you get all kinds of artsy NPR this way, because sprites include artistically prerendered perspective. It's way harder to incorporate this in modern games and they feel very lacking in this department by depending on uniform 3d perspective for everything other than minor baked AO and highlights that exists only in the most "painterly" ones.

>>12537427I love this aesthetic. Looks like Star Trek ship crossed with shopping mall.
>>12537413>>12537440I would play this. In theory it would be quite straightforward in that you could have a bunch of short sequential levels that are themed around the same themes as the arenas so you could use the meshes that come packaged with the game. UT2004 moved strongly away from relying on BSP except for the basic geometry.
The shotgun doesn't get enough love.
>>12537463What would the levels be filled with, what would the enemies be?>>12537469The regular Doom shotgun? It has a place, but suffers when the healthpools are pinkies or greater.
>>12537480>What would the levels be filled withSome you could fill with back and forth vent crawling and sewer hauls finding switches to open doors to link up the main geometry>what would the enemies be?I guess you would have to make some but if I remember correctly (which I'm not sure I do) there is a player model for a robot so that is a start of making an enemy force of robots.
>>12537480Yeah. And sure it has it's drawbacks but wads can either be revenant based or imp based. If the monster you're most liked to encounter when you turn a corner is a group of imps or some hitscanners, the shotgun is more effective. Mostly because it shoots faster.
>>12537493>If the monster you're most liked to encounter when you turn a corner is a group of imps or some hitscanners, the shotgun is more effective. Mostly because it shoots faster. If I turn a corner against some imps or hitscanners, I'm probably not going to stay there and will go back around the corner I turned around between shots. Then I'll use the super because it has triple the damage.I might rather use the shotgun over the super when range is a concern, and if I'm also lacking the chaingun.
>>12537493>Mostly because it shoots faster.I've got the AA12 from R667 in my current project it is absolute carnage
Armor should be just a second healthpool. If you really think about it, it kinda already is, just in a very scuffed and unintuitive way
>>12537509Why do that instead of just naturally allowing health to reach 200%?
https://dsdarchive.com/wads/myhouselook at the times lol
>>12537513But then what will the armor pickup do?Now that I think about it, perhaps it would be better to have two literal health bars? Like say one red and one green, both replenished by their own separate pickups (replacing vanilla medkits and armor pickups), whenever you get hurt the fuller one takes the damage, and you only die when both bars hit zero. Makes zero sense thematically though but it'd be easy enough to come up with some magical excuse
>>12537513So it acts as shields in Marathon, except it soaks damage and leaves your health alone.
>>12537528>But then what will the armor pickup do?If armor absorbs 100% of damage taken, what do they do that health bonuses don't?
>>12537530Allows the mapper to finetune the balance of the map by adjusting hp and armor pickups. Having two 200 hp pools is easier to balance than one 400 hp one
What are some WADs that have a doom metal soundtrack? If you don't know any, just tell me the last WAD you played that had awesome music.
>>12537530I'd make them just have a chance not to spawn but make them worth 5 armor points.
>>12537530Depends on how you make damage work when armor runs out. Like if you have 1 armor and 100 HP, and then take a hit worth 20 damage. Do you only take 1 damage and then the armor breaks, or do you eat the full 20 and you're left with 0 armor and 81 HP?
>>12537534How?
>>12537509You mean like shield in freelancer / X2?
>>12537539Treat armor as the first barrier, given commonly, and HP as the actual health, given sparingly and/or via secrets. Armor acts as the main way of surviving hits and you place more armor pickups. If they managed to procure HP pickups, it acts as a reward that allows them to survive where otherwise they'd be dead>why not just have 400hpNo matter how many armor pickups you give the player, you know that they can only enter your murderbox arena with 200 armor max and you balance your encounters around that. Any hp they might have is a bonus
How extensive is Blood modding compared to its open-sourced contemporaries? I want to know if anyone's ever tried re-implementing the Beast mechanic. I've only seen one mod of the sort and it seems like a glorified sprite swap of the pitchfork.
>>12537553That sounds like it'd be a lot of fun as a community project, honestly.
>>12537480>What would the levels be filled with, what would the enemies be?Steal them from U2, of course.
>>12537509Nah, the current system is fine. You still have to absorb the impact from the projectile, it makes sense it would hurt.
>>12537509It's true, if I have 100 health and 50 blue I can survive up to 150 damage, but if I have 100 health and 200 blue, then 200 damage will kill me and leave 100 blue armour on my corpse.

This guy makes a lot of stuff on FTE (though some newer things are Godot): https://itch.io/profile/shpAll of it is pretty short, meant for game jams I think.I think there was a sequel of sorts to Quake 1.5 that runs on FTE instead of DP.
