What went so right with FF7 in 1997?

There was a buildup of western interest in JRPGs that reached a peak at that time. It didn't just appear out of nowhere. Squaresoft only invested the time and money into such a massive game only because FF4, FF6, the DQs and Chrono Trigger showed an upward trend for the genre outside of Japan. If FF6 had flopped, then FF7 would have been some single-disc scaled down affair but they already knew there would be an audience for it so they went all out.

What the fuck am I reading, this is like the polar opposite of the reality. DQ5 and 6 didn't even release outside of Japan, and FF4 and 6 didn't really perform on SNES than FF1 did on NES.
Your post is reading like one of those AI bots hallucinating answers and mixing everything up

According to the data, FF VI sold about 100,000 units more than the first game in America. When you consider that there were about half as many SNES consoles sold in America than NES, that is a pretty substantial increase. Obviously wasn’t a runaway success yet, but that does seem to show a gradual increase in popularity for FF at least. Don’t know what that guy is talking about with DQ though, the NES titles performed worse and worse over time in America.

it's a fun, effectively told story without retarded gimmicks in the basic combat. also there's some genuinely great humour, such as when cloud just gets flattened repeatedly in the flashback

Fun subsystems that aren't try hard bullshit like VIII but also offer more meat than VI or IX, good pacing and striking story beats, groundbreaking visuals at the time (zoomer seethe won't change the fact that people were wowed in 1997 and still remember the feeling), bigger than the sum of its parts, and a social experience. You unironically had to be there.

I didn't know that about DQ but JRPGs in general were gaining huge steam in the west by about '95 or so, if not earlier. FF7's success wasn't guaranteed but it seems pretty clear they took a calculated risk based on the trend.
And besides the sales numbers, all you have to do is look at the amount of pages that vidya mags dedicated to RPGs between about '92-'96. They went from niche sections at the back of the magazine to featured stories and on the cover. Literally even Beyond the Beyond got a Game Players cover.

Music, game duration, story, characters, visuals, fmv, gameplay, 3 disc for the price of one, good coverage in press media. Also aryan world didn't used to get so many JRPGs back then. Also squaresoft really cared back then.

sounds like modern game devs should make more games for 5 years old

Hype. It was all gaming magazine could talk about for a while. When a game sells out, normies take heed and stop buying FIFA games for a while and give that game a try.

>FFVI was popular first
Barely. That game was both expensive and rare as fuck. If you didn't pick up a copy right after the first wave of carts hit the shelves, good luck.

They must have gotten so excited when they realized they were publishing on CD and could make a whole bunch of super detailed and animated CG backgrounds.

That's where the money is.
Minecraft, Roblox, Fortnite and entire Nintendo library.
For comparision Vagrant Story and FF Tactics aimed for a more mature audience and look what happened.
>>
>>12575297
FF was niche and mediocre and vagrant story suffered from being rushed out both in gameplay polish and story, this has nothing to do with audience.
>Minecraft, Roblox, Fortnite and entire Nintendo library.
well known direct competitors to final fantasy
