The nips did exactly what you'd be asking them to if the roles were reversed. They explicitly rejected the stupid bullshit that sells well overseas and focused on making niche kino for the domestic market. In the end it couldn't hold up against Sony's global dominance but they had a good run with the Saturn.

Was planned and even showcased at E3. Sonic Team clearly did work on their own Sonic 3D around 96-97 (Sonic 3D Blast's bonus levels, the fact it was held back in Japan until 1999, the 3D sections in Sonic Jam)

I think Sonic Team's plans were held back for sure by the assumption that SoA was actually not wasting time with their Sonic Xtreme fiascos.

Idiotic decisions for sure. Sonic Jam had Sonic CD cutscenes already on disc, and a PC port already developed. It could have easily included it (and maybe Chaotix) to flesh it out some more (and maybe a more accessible retread of the 3D bonus levels from 3D Blast Saturn)
Shining Wisdom was a Genesis game up-ported to the Saturn and there's no reason why they didn't salvage their X32 cancelled slate and only focused on SoA's failed Sonic pitches.

They did retool games as Sonic games before (Tails Sky Patrol, Sonic Labyrinth, Mean Bean Machine... and even considered it with Popful Mail as Sister Sonic, or SegaSonic Bros.) and Sonic R is a racing game hastily retooled as a Sonic platformer, so they might as well have done it with more games.
For example Ninpen Manmaru is a bland, toddler easy, but competent 3D platformer, they could have licensed it from Enix and called it Tails Sky Patrol 2 or something

My parents ended up getting me a PSX instead since it was cheaper, its lack of backwards compatibility with the Genesis, 32X, and Sega CD. and my dad loved Sony (movie and music aficionado), which was great, but I was a loyal SEGAHEAD. It felt like a humiliation ritual listening to David Bowie after my dad discovered he could plug it into his speakers.
Gran Turismo was so amazing that I completely forgot about Sega Rally and Daytona USA the moment I got it.

changing brands is always a mixed bag of sensations. if i was rich i would have had every single console growing up, i kinda wanted them all, even the obscure ones. never got a PS1. i was a bit jealous of the size of the library but i can't say i really cared about its exclusives. I have some PS1 discs right now for my fat PS2 and most of them are multiplats that i like enough to double dip.
