To the anon helping me with Phobos Delta, I implemented a couple of things someone else had contributed. It's all very minor but it's there.
If you want to have a look or have more things to add/tweak, here's the file:

The idea of a built-in flashlight isn't bad, but I think you have something in mind regarding its functionality?

The anniversary update introduced some nice stuff like letting you use the original particle effects plus bicubic filtering for lightmaps (GIF related), so I'd keep that version in mind if you want to pirate

Oh yeah, I forgot I left that. If you wanna know what it'll be like, it's a toggleable version of the flashlight powerup from Omerta. Probably not as good as some other flashlight mods, but it'll do the job and it's not performance intensive. I can have that done in a bit. Think I wanna bump the jump height up by one, too.

I'll also have another update for the skins. When I first made them I was lazy and just renamed all their sprites to PLAY because I didn't want to make playerclasses. But I forgot that just makes all the dead marines copies of the player and that bothered me so I just redid things properly.

I rather like the flashlight being a sort of upgrade, so I decided to keep it in after tweaking the backpack spawners a little further. Players can still just load their preferred flashlight mod if they want after all.
Thanks for all the help. I'll see if there's anything else that needs fixing and likely post this batch of updates as V2 tomorrow.

>>

it's just somewhat inconsistent

there's a reason there are ten gorillion TNT tribute projects
>>
>>12865473
I was just going to say this. I'm not big on map08 either, still one of my favorite wads.
>>
>>12865474
Tastes on TNT have always varied a lot, some don't like it at all, some think it's nothing but good.
>>
>>12865474
>it's just somewhat inconsistent
This, it's got more ups and downs than Plutonia, and coming out at the same time means it's the worst thing ever to some people.
>>
You can now play multiplayer with uncapped fps in woof!
https://github.com/fabiangreffrath/woof/pull/2954
>>
>>12865482
They are kind of fundamentally different.

TNT:
>grew out of a mailing list/group on a bulletin board
>MANY contributors of very varying talents
>no particularly focused design goal
>contributions just kind of were what they were
>gets offered a commercial deal on a whim
>this affects direction for development
>making sure no contributor gets left out because now there's money involved
Turns out something pretty cool anyway, but the quality is all over the place. A lot of parts are really good, and I think stand the test of time well, but then there's a lot of mediocre stuff, and then a fair amount of questionable and bad stuff (though even those parts tend to have some good aesthetic/thematic qualities).
I think part of it is that TNT has a pretty good original soundtrack which helps a lot with tone and feel, making the good parts even better, and softening some of the rough parts.

Plutonia:
>started out as like 8 maps which two of the TNT contributors had noodled on in the past
>they aren't entirely happy with the direction of TNT
>want to make something more focused and to their tastes
>send in their 8 map demo to iD as an offer while the negotiations are going on
>iD thinks its good and says sure
>now make it a 32 level megawad in 4 months time
>that's what they do
Turns out something that's a lot more coherent in design, as it's made by only two guys who are on basically the exact same wavelength (brothers), and with a clear idea of what they want it to be. In terms of gameplay, it's just a lot stronger, though it lacks much of the neat aesthetics which TNT got going for it.

All in all, I think Final Doom turned out to be a pretty damn good double bundle, it offered you a lot of novelty and quality for Doom 2. Works of this quality and extent, together with this size (32+32), wasn't exactly growing on trees in 1996, both TNT and Plutonia alone were ones of a very few.

Oh, you should if you like classic PC Doom, it's like an all new campaign that's mostly based in the PC games.

Arch-Vile was too many frames and his programming wasn't entirely conducive to the way the old console ports were structured, so that's why he's nixed from all the console ports in the 90s.
With Doom 64, they wanted it to be more than just another port, and they tried to do all they could to up variety and provide content in the face of limitations, and one of the ways they did that was to make the Pain Elemental the new OH SHIT enemy.

Lost Souls in Doom 64 are a lot more aggressive, attacking much more often and faster, and they do splash damage when they explode on death.
Pain Elementals now spit two of them at a time instead of one, and if you do the old trick of blocking their spawns by getting in their face, you'll now take that splash damage of that Lost Soul dying, so they are VERY dangerous to get close to.

/r/ing the OC from this thread who was some sort of blue demon who had a crossbow and I believe was wearing tight black leather gear. I'm thinking of a certain fanart image but if any of you even just have the mod that she's from that would be great.
This is NOT my fetish or anything whack like that but I suddenly imagined the art while listening to liquid DnB high and thought of her in a game like Metal: Hellsinger but aesthetically the complete opposite (instead of being a red demon blasting through hell to metal-adjacent music you're a blue one styling through wherever to electrojazz music).

I actually also just had an idea on how to put limits on it if you want, regarding the flavor text I put in there. I don't know how to make the charge movement-based, but I did ACS thing like the dodge tokens that gives you battery charge the light uses, and gives you a cooldown that prevents the charge if you use it until it's empty. I think I did it right. The cut off part is if the battery is less than the current max of 50 and you don't have the cooldown and the light isn't on. I'm fairy certain there's a better way to do the cooldown giver script but I don't know all the ACS keywords.

I also thought that if the character is supposed to be a cyborg we could just do away with the flashlight and give them toggleable night vision. But maybe that would be a bit much.

Yes to the first, no to the second. In base Deathstrider you can play as either Solomon, a big metal skeleton who's the personification of Death, Wraith, actually normal human, or Niven, scary bitch vampire. There's some custom playerclass add-ons and Ophelia's in one of them.

Sorry, once again I don't know what the fuck I'm doing and didn't exactly get far figuring it out on my own.
I do believe as of the last version posted in this thread, I've made the HUD use forcescale and gave it a resolution of 640x480 as well (1920x1080 made it tiny). I was under the impression this would have fixed the mugshot woes.
Also, added a level start script taken straight out of Sun Damage Omen.

I'm also very lacking in knowledge on sbarinfo. Best I can do is fix the mugshot offsets myself when I'm done sending stuff.

Here's the version with the new flashlight behavior.
https://litter.catbox.moe/fqk2lh6md4qqroua.zip

You get 50 seconds of light, and it recharges at a rate of 1 every half second, but if you use all the charge there's a 10 second delay before it starts charging again. I more or less chose the numbers at random.

Turbo streamlines and improves a lot of encounters, which I think is worth it alone even before you count him adding a fuckton more sector toilets.

I've played both recently, and started with Turbo because I value good maps more than combat. I haven't played them before this so I have no nostalgia, I also play with pistol start but I keep my inventory from map to map and I do use saves sparingly.
Turbo does what it set out to do and polish up some maps, specially significant on maps 3, 19, 23, 25 and 27. It makes them easier to navigate, removes filler fights and just makes them flow better.
It also goes too far on map 12, 14 and 17. I can't pick between each version of maps 7, 10, 18 and 22. Some fights were made easier, which also speeds it all up which is good, but also feels like there's not enough pushback.
Also I think "turbo" is a silly name.

respawning monsters ruin most wads

you can enable nightmare reflex mode on top of -fast in zdoom for a more moderate version
>>
>>12866736
Sorta kinda. It changes the gameplay into a speed and endurance challenge, not necessarily speedrunning, but monsters don't stay dead, so you are really pressured for how you can manage and use what resources you have. Trying to run past combat can sometimes work, but often the more aggressive monsters make this harder to do, and you MUST fight.
You may need to stage when you kill some monsters, as if they respawn at an inopportune time, that can possibly fuck you.

Doom and Doom 2 are ultimately beatable on NM, but then Final Doom alone is EXTREMELY hard on NM.
>>
>>12866769
Kinda. NM changes the gameplay, and vanishingly few works have been made with those changes in mind. If it's harder than Doom 2 on UV, then it's probably going to be too hard on NM for more than a couple of people in the entire world to beat, if it even can be beat.

Not Even Remotely Fair is the only .wad I know which was deliberately made for NM.

>>
>>12866851
Not sure what version you're on, but before I did things, you could only do one normal dodge, then you'd get fatigued for three seconds and those dodges are shorter, and the character makes a noise when you do them.

Way it works now is, you dodge, you get a dodge token in your inventory. Dodge with two of those and you get fatigued, which now lasts 5 seconds. 1 token is removed every second. So if you pace your dodges, you can do full ones as much as you want.

You're probably using strafe-lean, right? I don't know if it's something that's specific to my mod, there might be something that changed in the sourceports themselves that broke it. I just use the traditional lean left/right keys.

>>12866880
These changes are being shared here in the thread, actually. I'm (slowly) getting things in order for a v2 release that should be out soon.
V1.5 is already vastly outdated by comparison.
>>
>>12867031
I'm not at my main PC right now so I can't check, but I use that one universal keybind for leaning (bound to left ALT) as opposed to individual keybinds for left and right leaning. As far as I know, the actual Strafe keybind should be unbound, and I am using the latest version of UZDoom.
>>
>>12867049
Yeah, that would be strafe lean. I'll try to check when I have the time but I recall it just didn't work after GZ 4.11 or something came out. It's what I use for most mods out of habit.
I don't think loading it before or after my mod will do much of anything, they don't really share anything that could possibly interfere if loaded together in the first place.
>>
>>12867056
Well, what's also weird is that it didn't do this at all when I used Immerse with Subsonic Whisper. Maybe it's also something with Phobos-Delta 1/Deimos-1's movement system.
>>
>>12867058
Shit, you're right. I tested it with nothing loaded and it works just fine. Maybe it just sort of breaks if the mod changes how the player moves? I'm not sure. I noticed this with Nightmare Logic and Training Drill, both of which make tweaks to the player's movement. Since I only ever used Immerse with those mods, I assumed it was a port problem.
>>
>>12867065
Maybe loading it after whatever mod changes movement might fix it, I'll find out if I ever get back to my PC. If it's the Tilt++ part of Immerse causing problems, I'll try to get the attention of Nash himself to look at it.

>>12869158

>>
>>12869170
Maybe next time. I like to pistol start new wads to experience each map fresh, but I get the feeling I won't do this again for Eviternity 2 since the Perforator is too nice to lose.
>>
>>12868780
>>12869090
that's all single segment, right?
>>
>>12869173
that seems backwards

i only pistol start maps that are either the first level of the wad (obviously) or i've beaten the wad on UV-max. it's miserable looking for secrets dodging demon fire to get a real weapon imo, especially if they deny you a shotgun guy to kill early in the level
>>
>>12869185
Nta but I like pistol start for that exact reason
Nothing better than going 10 minutes without the SSG or something wondering where it is then feeling like you're a god once you finally grab it
>>
>>12869185
>or i've beaten the wad on UV-max

>>12869213
But yeah, I don't UV max no save blind or anything, I just like pistol starting new maps. Honestly with Eviternity it feels a bit pointless since the levels are clearly a continuation of each other and your inventory resets every five maps anyway so maybe I am going about this one wrong. Nice levels all the same.
>>
>>12869194
impressive pace!
>>
>>12869218
I'd argue Eviternity 2 is intended or continuous play anyway
>You're getting your guns reset every chapter
>The levels all follow on from each other and its supposed to be a journey
>You'll only get the Perforator in secret maps, and often at the end as a reward.
I recommend trying it continuous from Episode 2.
>>
>>12869269

>>
>>12869185

Anons here don't pistol start wads first time through? I thought most people did.
>>
>>12869331
Normal people reserve challenge runs for replays.
>>
>>12869331
I only ever pistol start maps when testing my own maps, if there's a death exit, or I do one of the thread challenges.
>>
>>12869341
Most maps are made with pistol start in mind, it's not a challenge run when it's the intended way to play. We're not talking UV max saveless here (unless that anon you were talking to is doing that, which is retarded for a first run unless you're some youtuber)
>>
>>12869348
Most mapsets also do not prevent you from playing continuous.
>>
>>12869349
This, there's an age old obsession with pistol starting dating back to how vanilla maps weren't designed with any kind of order so they had to be individually completable for testing purposes. Somebody always conflates that to it's how the end user was always supposed to play the game.

If mappers really want to force pistol starts they can, and players can also break that shit if they don't want to deal with it. Most mappers aren't nearly as bothered about that shit as some anons get over how others play the game.

Alright. Here's a thing:
https://files.catbox.moe/e8dxpo.zip

It's a forkin hack of WadTogether, a browser based multiplayer doom editor, but the 3D UI is made to be good for kids. Block modeling like in ye olde DOS wad editors, but with minecraft controls.
If you're not a kid it still might be good for greyboxing a map.
G for gravity, tools have little instructions when selected...
doing complex map scripting would still be easier in doombuilder, picking linedef actions that aren't simple doors or elevators is done numerically. There's no node builder, so you have to do that separately.

build instructions in the readme, localhost:8080, comes with freedoom2.wad

It's pretty fun to use imo. you can hack out a level, drag around edges for rounded corners, texture, place things, cut in lines with the edge tool... You could make a whole map in the 3D view, but the 2D view is still there for convenience, it's just better for some things.

Sometime down the line I'd like to set up a public server and see how that works out. I tested it a bit with just 2 users and it was neat.

Something that's insanely fun that's only possible with infinite monster height turned off: run from an elevated position and land on top of a Spider Mastermind. It cannot shoot you. One shot BFG it while standing on top of it.
>>
>>12869269
I definitely remember at least one example of continuous play being absolutely intended in Eviternity 2: there's a level AFTER you get the Perforator where, near the very beginning, there's like 20-30 weak monsters all lined up neatly, single-file for the Perforator.
Very obviously intentional.

I don't know the difference in how physics works in doom and quake so I can't

two ways to sr50 (assuming your strafe key is bound to mouse2 and turn right key is bound to Q like by default in dsda):
1. W + mouse2 + move mouse right
2. W + mouse2 + D + Q
dsda has command history thingy you can use to verify you're doing it right (option -> key bindings -> toggles -> command display)

Quake bunny hopping is something like jump + w + d + turn right (but not too much) and then jump + w + a + turn left (but not too much). It's harder to pull off than doom sr50 and I suck at it. And also Q1/Q3/Xonotic all have subtle varieties to it that I don't understand.

ohhh, i didn't know about the strafe key, i'm not doing it right

AI Slop:
SR50 (Max-Velocity Straferunning)

SR50 is an advanced, highly specialized technique used extensively in Classic Doom Speedrunning. It forces the sideways vector to match the maximum forward vector.
• How it works: To get a maximum strafe value of 50 units instead of 40, you must stack two different strafe inputs simultaneously. You have to hold down 4 or 5 buttons at once: Forward + Strafe Right + Strafe-On Modifier + Turn Right. The "Strafe-On" modifier converts your "Turn" command into a secondary strafe command, and the engine combines them to reach the maximum 50-unit cap.
• The Math: Combining a forward speed of 50 and a sideways speed of 50 results in a total velocity of 70.7 units. This makes you 141% faster than standard forward running.
• The Catch: You move at a perfect 45° angle, but because your turning keys are being hijacked into strafe inputs, your viewing angle is completely locked. You can only travel in a rigid, straight line until you release the keys.

i've only been doing sr40 and this would explain why i can't get the secrets on certain wads

i can explain the difference between q1/cpma bhop and q2/q3 strafe jump after breakfast or something check back later

>>

if you're going to use mouselook be a man and turn the autoaim off, then you won't have to deal with projectile retardation

i used to play the original zdoom with no autoaim and mouselook but now that i'm old i prefer a more hybrid classic approach that the modern id ports use

the main reason i don't use it anymore is it makes the rocket launcher too powerful and it's way too easy to beat the icon of sin

Ground Zero done. Best mission pack so far

Starting Zaero
>>
>>12870120
i can make an argument that a properly designed continous play wad can be even more difficult a wad designed specifically for pistol starting because continuous play makes you decide if it's a good idea to use your rockets and cells and sometimes you want to deliberately leave health behind to get a full refresh before you exit the map

obviously pistol starting a wad not meant for it will be even harder, but for most people that would be too far (like playing on nightmare)

i'd be interest in making a wad around this concept but i'd need a co-author to do the UV enemy placement cause i'm a scrublord and i'd make HMP what i can beat and make HNTR for people who beat doom 2 but don't want anything harder

i hear eviternity is pretty highly regarded here and now that i know it's not a pistol start wad i'll check it out after i'm done with the wads i got in queue
>>
>>12870106
It can't be, the rockets are smaller and have a higher spawnheight, and the plasma is even faster, so it can't be that either. I also never play with auto aim, and I made it a point of adding weapon.noautoaim to every weapon because of this and it didn't help.

Also I just got to the Illya map where he puts you on a tiny boat with no cover and I'm not having a good time.

Zaero’s interesting. I don’t know if it comes with the behavorial changes that were in Reckoning and Ground Zero but it was still fun. The other one I’ve played was Juggernaut: It felt gross in a ‘good’ way, if that makes sense? Something about the new enemy models and overall textures felt off-putting.
>>12870141
>It can't be, the rockets are smaller and have a higher spawnheight
Okay, that’s strange and the opposite of what I assumed since I was having issues with Deimos/PD-1’s rockets, too.

You know how you know if it's a pistol start wad? If every exit is a death exit.
If this is not the case, it's not a pistol start wad.

So I just finished Anagnorisis yesterday.
Now I'm tired. I don't think I'll ever play that one again. I'm not into replaying wads but I've done so multiple times with some of my favourites and they're all on the shorter end.
Must have taken more to make that one map than maybe an entire episode of the wad, and yet, it's something that I'll only experience once and I assume others will do the same as well. It looks very pretty and the walls of imps feel oppressive (they're probably my favourite part of the map) but I don't it's that amazing gameplay wise and there are other maps that can make you feel small without being as gigantic and a bit annoying to navigate when looking for secrets.
I don't know, I'm tired now. I was gonna try and finish Eviternity AND still play What Lies Beneath during spooky season but I don't think I'll manage now.
>>
>>12870692
I’ve played Anagnorisis twice in two years now, both for full Eviternity replays, both were great times. But it does affirm my belief that such elaborate secret levels would be better placed at the end of a megawad instead of halfway through it.

Citadel and 25th Anniversary are some of the best mods that can also function as “gameplay mods”. They’re great.
I think 25th even has mild support for Zaero, it’s at least completable.

I still never get how people just play the same twenty odd wads over and over again, most aren't even speedrunning or anything, they just loop through the same ones constantly.

Shit just feels way better to me to find fucktons of smaller wads that I can get loads of different experiences with.
>>
>>12871265
Kind of. I have a mod that removes weapons between levels, but keeps my ammo and health untouched.
>>
>>12871267
True, which is why I'd preferably want Oblivion working with either Citadel or the 25th Anniversary mod. Those are basically the culmination of Reckoning and Ground Zero's additions, and so is Q2R with some random nerfs and changes.
>>
>>12871269
>Shit just feels way better to me to find fucktons of smaller wads that I can get loads of different experiences with.

That's always been my approach. I prefer to constantly play the new stuff that comes out, even if it's shit. There's so much new Doom being put out literally every day and you'll never play it all, so why would you play the same handful of WADs in perpetuity? That's just a method determined to kill your love for the game.
>>
>>12871265
Also the map before it, Imperator, is a death exit. Even if it wasn't for my mod, Anagnorisis would still be a pistol start.
>>
>>12871304
>even if it's shit.
It greatly helps to play the shit wads and unknown ones anyway, you develop a much better understanding of what is good and what is bad than people who only play something that has won a cacoward.
>>
>>12871312
One of the reasons I especially love playing newbie maps is, if you can spot the potential, it becomes a lot of fun to watch the mapper's skills grow and their level designs improve over time. Seen a lot of awesome mappers come up like that for the past near-decade.

>>12870025

my problem is that even playing at a modest ~720p in Nugget/woof I still stumble on an odd wad every now and then that rapes my fps to below 60fps at certain spots because of insane sector art and that's unacceptable. Helion feels weird. UZ/GZdoom are nope. DSDA doesn't have surround sound. The other source ports are a mixed bag. Thought about lowering my standards like accepting steady 35fps as being ultra vanilla but.. nah.
