The remake of this guy just game out, so we're having a DRPG thread.
>>
Playing the second game

>super fast combat when you're holding down X/A
>autowalk, even across multiple maps
>varied outdoor areas
>race/gender/class specific portraits but you can change portraits to use other classes'

I love it. I wish they kept the vancian magic system from the first game though.

Literally bought a psp for this game because I was a big etrian odyssey fan

Biggest we have Etrian Odyssey at home moment thankfully they released Elminage 1

Just beat EOU1 classic, after beating the post game I'm probably gonna play Potato Flowers next or Wizardry 1-3 SNES. Any good western DRPG recommendations that aren't tile-dancers? Nothing against them I'm just in the mood for stuff closer to Wizardry.

I was just about to make a thread too, fun series. Probably should have used this pic instead. Its out on Steam, PS5, and the Switch
>>
>>3466932
Elminage Original is okay, my main problem with it is that its dungeons are too large and have too many pointless rooms. I'm finding the dungeons in CoH2 a lot more enjoyable so far.
>>
>>3467234
I don't mind big dungeons, it's fun to explore what I can't stand is the autistic alchemy system, it would be okay if it was sort of optional upgrades but if you want anything good you have to use that shit
>>
>>3466946
>Wizardry 1-3 SNES
>SNES
don't do that, the campaigns arent even in order
>>
>>3467250
Which version should I play then?
>>
>>3467240
My problem with Elminage 1's dungeons is that they are intricate but feel somewhat procedurally generated and have next to no placed content. It takes a lot of busywork to explore every nook and cranny but there's little reward. With CoH2 I can see chests in the distance and try to find out how to reach them, or simply how to reach the other side of the dungeon to progress to the next region. That's another thing I like a lot about CoH2, it feels like Wizardry 6-8 / Grimoire where all the maps are connected together and you go to different regions on foot like it's an open world rather than just selecting them from a menu like in Elminage or Dungeon Travelers 2.

How are you supposed to use devils without destroying your party affinity? A party full of those blue gnomes?

Also are idols good?
>>
>>3467584

>>
anyone knows what those two stars mean right above the map's name? I'm guessing the first is for fully revealing the tiles, but I haven't gotten the second one
>>
>>3466857
How's the translation? I'll pick it up if it's not too fruity.
>>
>>3469565
The first star can't be for fully revealing tiles, I have it for maps where I still haven't explored lots of tiles. Maybe it's for when you've picked up all the chests? I also have a star for the "Forest's Treasure" map in Witch's Forest even though I've never visited it yet.
>>
>>3469548
yeah but there's an English option in the menus that translations stuff (outside of names)
>>
>>3466857
On the PC version, ss there an in-game option to switch text language, or do you need to do it through Steam?
>>
>>3469920
i don't see any language option on main menu, probably need to set it up on steam

How is this allowed?

I keep hearing people recommending newcomers to start with CoH2 instead. Am I missing much if I skipped CoH1?
>>
>>3472364
Perma-death is just one of those Wizardry mechanics, in general CoH1 is just an anime reskin wizardry.

>I keep hearing people recommending newcomers to start with CoH2 instead.
It's an easier game with better difficulty curve, handmade dungeons (CoH1 uses randomgen), and plenty of QoL improvements. CoH1 can be rather brutal especially for those new to the genre while CoH2 is very beginner friendly.

>Am I missing much if I skipped CoH1?
Not really, the games are completely separate from each other.

Nonono, he's right. The team that did the Wizardry Xth games in Japan split up and part of them ended making CoH1. Under the hood, CoH1 is nigh identical to Wizardry Xth2.

Yeah, it's pretty forgiving due to save-scumming. Had similar experience with Labyrinth of Souls, though perma part of death was thankfully not a common occurrence. I do like the concept, but these games are not exactly built around it.

You just described my first 2 hours with this kusoge.

Do yourself a favor and roll yourself a sorc. Monsters in later dungeon (eg. Ancient Labyrinth) will be highly resistant to phys damage and will require light magic. Also they have teleport to fast travel between towns.

That's... just how these games work. It's not an issue once you become accustomed to such things and take it slowly, learning to prepare for such adventures.

Do we have any good info sources on 2? I started it and there's a lot of mechanics not explained. Is there a way to teach spells to any class or do they only get them at certain levels? Do classes that don't have magic really get nothing other than a few passives and one active skill or is there a way to expand their move list?
>>
>>3483445
Just reincarnate if you want to give magic to other classes, you get something like 24 class changes per character.

Are they finally going to re-release 3 (and maybe final, too) this time or is it just CoH 1 & 2 again like always?

Been playing the first game and have been loving it despite never messing with a DRPG before (one hour of EO1 years ago doesn't count, although I'm now more open to giving it a fairer shot). Currently having to go through the labyrinths and beating the bosses in those. Unlocked the arena not long ago too and it's a nice little cash grinder for when I'm running low, which I'm honestly surprised about not having any downsides whatsoever for dying because I was expecting something besides just adding to the death counter.

Playing the first game. Managed to reach Holdeah Range by passing through the Holdea Cave. No other options seem available to me from there. How do I reach other areas?

>>
>>3486222
I've been looking forward to this one since last year when it was announced. I really hope the gameplay is good and character, as well as battlesystem are somewhat complex and fun. Best case its somewhere around EO, worst case its an experience slop. I could be accepting of latter depending on how good the yuri is. I am also a little reluctant about the relationship system. A party of five means that one girl will be left over. Should that be my genderbent self-insert i keep away from the other four and watch their romance from afar? How reliably can i control this system and how much is rng? I want as little as possible jealousy shit or worse, ntr, happen. Looking at the devs and the little webcomics about this game it seems to target the "overcome hardships with the power of yuri and your soulmate" theme. I want the four girls i choose to overcome hardships, yes, but keep their bond as pure and vanilla as possible. I want to watch them hold hands, be all flirty with each other, share a kiss here and there. Looks of despair as they see their loved one in a near-death situation that i, as my genderbent self-insert tactician dps support character, still somehow manage to turn around but still let them rescue each other to strengthen their yuribond. Become all hot and bothered hearing them moan at the inn at night and thus taking my leave when suddenly, the big-breasted innkeeper pins my loli gender-bent self-insert against the wall and makes out with me. Yes, if all this is possible it will be my personal goty. I hope EA is not a redflag by the end and the game has actual content.

I liked it a lot. Great writing, great characters, plenty to work with for lorefags. Dungeons are great both to explore and for how alive they feel, which the sequel improves on the former but falls flat with the latter. Combat was kind of underwhelming to me but serviceable.

I just finished Cirnozardry, my first ever drpg and I loved it. Had to use a mapping tool, it was slow at first and I had to rely on a character that could show a bit of your surroundings, but after some days I felt confident enough to drop that one unit and eventually learnt to map the dungeons based on the blocks I could see. Could've used the walkthrough and save time but I just had too much fun picking all the icons and whatnot.
Some of the fights were potentially quite punishing if you weren't geared well enough but there was always a workaround, it all boilled down to team comp and gearing. Take the very last boss for instance, very intense fight with tons of status ailments and AoE attacks and I just couldn't make much progress last night, but today I tried out a different strategy and to my surprise I beat it on my 1st try. Had my fair share of bullshit moments but the moment I could overcome those really hard fights I felt very satisfied.
Now I want to try other drpgs. Considering I wasn't even aware of Wizardry before playing this game you can deduce how little I know about the genre. Any recomendations?
>>
>>3488114
It's honestly pretty mediocre, I don't recommend it.

The majority of 4 niggas in a row threads are just idiots going back and forth over turn based combat vs action. Personally I like basically any turn based game. There's only a few I put down and won't pick back up. If you're asking about DRPGs I like Etrian and SMT because I'm a basic bitch.
>>
I'm playing CoH2 and strangely kind of enjoying it despite how primitive combat is and a lot of mechanics in general. Like why am I not allowed to see the costs for the tension gauge skills? Why are all the spells each class gets hidden? Why can't I select which individual enemy to attack and only select the row? Why does the enemy box window show up right on top of the 2D illustrations instead of you know, just moving it above or below it? I'm assuming it all comes down to classic Wizardry influence autism but it makes me curious as to what 3 is like. I don't think it was ever translated so I guess I'll never know. I found the old CoH2 psp guide on gamefaqs so I know some information about what spells each class gets but I still wish there was more ways to build each character. Right now the only thing I know of is to learn the spells of one class then change jobs to the one you want to use. But each race is very restricted on what classes they can use so this is still very limited building. There is the penalty of cutting HP/MP in half but it seems like as long as I change classes at a high enough level, the level 1 unit's HP/MP will still be higher than what they original had at level 1 anyways. Also the RNG based stat gains and chance to lose stats annoys me.
>>
>>3486222
I remember seeing it as a shame that labyrinth of galleria let you establish very specific relationships between characters (rivals, childhood friends, princess and knight, lovers, etc.) only for it to not mean anything gameplay-wise

Dungeon Travelers series.
I also prefer set cast of characters since I can't bother making units from its name to stat growth.
>>
>>3489855
The stat gains+losses are based on a level curve on top of chance to gain/lose. If your stats are too low then stat gains are boosted, if stat is too high then there's good chance of stat loss.

>swinging daggers for either 1 damage 80% of the time, or 19 damage and one-shotting an enemy
>can't choose which enemy you're hitting so I don't feel like I'm using any kind of tactics early on
Wow, I hate this. I think I like the idea of these games more than any of the actual games I've tried.

>early access for a dungeon crawler seems very weird to me
That is what bothers me, too. How much of the game is unfinished? Half of it? The last dungeon? Or is it about other systems? Missing classes? Not all relationship pairings done? I really hope the game is finished and they just put it out in EA for bugfixing since japs are autistic about that.
>>

There are also some where you can recruit set characters over the course of the game as well as create them, like Wizardry: Tale of the Forsaken Land.

i've wanted to like etrian but the intro always kills it for me and it takes too long to get any builds going. i think the one i got furthest in was eo5 and that's because i was doing the broken necro thing. i think i was in the stratum after the crystal dragon. i just started etrian odyssey 3 on ds and i openned up the skill tree and closed it right then and there.

What keeps you going is the headcanon you create for your party. I always love to pair them up and think what they do and how they behave. And then you realize youre already level 40.
>>
>>3490205
i saw that post in /eog/ how the producer wants you to use your imagination... it's just too much tism for me. it's doable in 5 and nexus since you have much more customization options for the portraits. but color a/b for the older titles kills it for me.
>>
>>3490163
There's also the untold remakes of EO1 and 2. EO's normally a Make Your Own Partu series, but the untold games added a story mode with a preset party of 5. I don't know if I'd reccomend them, though.
>>
>>3490147
The "random" dungeons are the part I like the least, I think. That seems more appropriate for an end game or optional area for when you really want to see how big your nuts are. I'm also frustrated that I can't find scans of the manual anywhere. I'd like more info on the game's systems, but I don't want to look at a full-fledged guide.
I'll just have to come back when I'm more experienced. The only DRPG I've ever beaten is Demon Gaze, and that was like a decade ago.
>>
>>3490424
EOU1's preset is kinda blegh, but required to unlock certain content, while EOU2 is pretty solid. You can tell EO team learned from their mistakes with first Untold's story mode. Granted I still prefer doing classic over story, but thankfully you don't miss out on as much in 2.

I've seen people complain about how overtuned a lot of the bosses feel in EO2U because Fafnir is undeniably OP, but that made it even more satisfying to beat in Classic mode, an ailment/bind party centered around a Dark Hunter was super fun to play
>>
>>3491726
They might be, it's kinda hard to notice when you play the same series as it keeps getting releases. The only EO I recall having any real struggle in was EOU1's story mode.
You really can tell the quality of a game from how they treat their ailment and buff/debuff systems. And DAMN EO really does make bind parties fun.

Steampage updated, the game is complete. It's EA for polish and balance. As well as to "develop it into a more captivating yuri dungeon rpg". Yep, i'm thinking based.
>>
I've recently finished and am mixed on two DRPGs.

The first is Starcrawlers Chimera. It heavily streamlines the original. No factions, no party, one unit(but it can take 7 skill trees which corresponds to the starcrawlers classes plus weapons plus a bunch of other stuff, which has a plot reason for it and I'm glad that happened), no choices, one dungeon. Instead of instanced turn based combat with the time system you have turn based combat in the actual game world so positioning matters, and timing is reduced to either you have an instant ability or you don't.
I mostly enjoyed it, but it ran like dick, is a bit buggy, the content reuse got grating by floor 4/7, the music's a complete downgrade from the first game and the bossrush at the end very much killed my interest in the game. It's a bunch of really tanky yet really easy bosses.
>a boss who gets really high resistances every time you attack them, with a 10% decay every turn you don't attack them. So attack and then stop attacking.
>a boss that died near instantly and I don't remember what it does.
>a boss that spawns in merc units you found across the floors and you can't hit it until you go through all 7 or so merc units first which takes forever because it spends like 10 turns in between spawning each unit and they die in 4 turns if you're built right.
>the final boss which has an assload of HP(100k on the normal difficulty) and the majority of damage is dealt by NPC allies dealing anywhere from 110 damage to 5k damage, and my character dealt 100-400 damage per turn
I tried a melee run on a higher difficulty but didn't pick dodge and it felt extremely unrewarding to slash shit akimbo(the animations and sound design aren't there) so I quit.

The game's fun for a run but if you play it, don't craft or sell milton's stapler because I assume it locked me out of one of the final boss allies and it was therefore even slower.
>>
>>3493124
The second game was Hellslave and I'm also mixed on it.
It has a really cool artstyle, interesting setting and sometimes neat music for some of the dungeons. The actual gameplay and character building is extremely limited. It's also timeline based but my issue is that your skill trees may be completely limited by which starting demon you pick, and besides a single sentence you don't really get a decent idea of what you're in for until you pick it. I picked what seemed to be the melee berserker class who builds up rage for abilities, but the only two abilities I had that used rage for 90% of the game was an attack that dealt 2x damage which was my main attack, and a multi target attack which was my opener since I could only use it once until I turned into a demon. Also on an "inferno mode"(NG+) playthrough you couldn't even switch to a different demon so I quit before I even finished that too since I was just about sick of the game by then.

There's a really shitty loot system since gear progression was heavily limited on my playthrough. Just about my entire armor set was determined by the third dungeon(out of like 10?) and my weapons didn't change for 3 dungeons at a time, I had a dagger, then a fist, then I crafted an ultra-light weapon that was my main weapon for the rest of the game.
Crafting's also fucked because you can't even get the crafting drops for a good chunk of your weapons and looking at the steam forums I wasn't the only one running into this issue.

I'm very mixed on it because I won't claim I completely hated it, but I also felt it got stale incredibly quickly and was playing for the plot/lore which is sparse and ended on a very lame note(you kill Satan to become Satan, no idea if Inferno changes anything plotwise but the first dungeon on that took a while to get through fights and I can't be fucked to replay until I get a decent weapon and then blitz through fights again).

>>3493124
>>3493131
I agree with you on pretty much all points about both of them. Neither is particularily bad but both have enough issues to not be particularily good either.
Starcrawlers Chimera disapointed me more though but mostly just because it is such a big step backwards in most ways from Starcrawlers.
>>
>>3493234
What gets me about Chimera is that first person scifi dungeon crawler about corpo raids would be cool as fuck to play but the actual execution is very hit and miss.
Progression in skills is fine and what I think is the best aspect of the game.

Progression in loot is completely fucked and it's laughable how there's an entire tree for weapon modding when half the time you cannot possibly estimate what result combining a pistol with a sword would be(not just damage and attribute wise but also range accuracy bonuses for weapons was a common pain point for me with combining guns) and when you do get a half decent weapon you can just easily stumble on another weapon two levels higher completely blowing it out of the water in terms of average damage and ammo consumption.

It seemed to me like you could completely steamroll 80% of the game(from floors 2-7) when your skills come online and you have decent weapons but then the final boss rush comes in and you can either 6 turn a boss or take literally 400 turns(it saved four times in between the fight so I'm counting that) slowly plinking down the final boss who isn't a threat besides her laser cannon tanking the FPS to near single digits and making me paranoid that I'm amount to overheat my PC.

Ammo's a crapshoot because you're entirely at the mercy of drops and vendors to not run out, Bullet Farmer just cannot keep up and it's a net loss.

Positioning is fun and all against melee units, against ranged units and grenades there's not really anything you can do because sightlines are weird and you're never sure if you can't actually hit someone or if the UI's bugging out again.

It's a really cool concept but I mentioned in another thread that I don't think they got literally anything out of early access since it hadn't even broken 50 reviews when it left its three/four year EA period which is a damn shame.
Also the loss of faction fuckery and an overarching plot is lame. I get why they did it but it's sitll lame.
>>
>>3493285
>Also the loss of faction fuckery and an overarching plot is lame. I get why they did it but it's sitll lame.
I honestly don't get why they did it and think it was a terrible fucking idea.
>>
>>3493292
Have you finished the game? If not, spoilers
Turns out dr Cereberus(your target) is actually your client and also your creator, for you are actually a Starcrawlers Chimera™ made up of seven individuals(which all correspond to the seven skilltrees you picked). I assume the game also tracks how many times you died and plugs it in as the number of experiments it took for Dr Cerberus to perfect you at the end of the game.

Anyways since you aren't an actual starcrawler and you're raiding one building of one corporation it wouldn't make sense to have other corpos involved

Why they couldn't just compensate by having more of the production floor where two rival factions in the company were feuding and expanding further on that is beyond me, though.
>>
>>3493300
I mean it's just such a terrible, lifeless, low-effort step back from the first Starcrawlers I don't know why they bothered making it.
>>
>>3493313
I hate to be harsh on the devs because I'm rooting for them if they ever make an actual sequel to Starcrawlers and they're actively in the forums trying to help out people but yeah, it's a step back in every way.
I'm curious if there are any other sci-fi dungeon crawlers.

Both the ambushes and the NPCs are more annoying than dangerous, unlike resource management in classic Wizardry.

If you want the dungeons to be the hard part you should look at Western DRPGs, there's a few Japanese ones that have CBT dungeons, but they mostly only show their teeth in the post game so the amount of CBT dungeoning is probably too low for you in something like Etrian Odyssey or Dungeon Travelers

Well, I'm pissed. I've been playing CoH2 on Switch and the game just decided to glitch out and delete 4 of my main party members. I've been using multiple parties and apparently the game does not like it when you have two parties stationed at the same school or something. The code is absolutely fucked, I resume with another party at one school and then go back to resume my main party and now four members are replaced by generic human male portraits at level 1. My missing members don't show up in the "organize" option but they still show up when I browse members. I managed to get them to show up in the "retrieve" option at the infirmary for 0g each but then it just doesn't work. It says the recall is successful but then doesn't remove them from the list and add them back. I've tried everything and of course there's zero information on this piece of shit game. I was actually enjoying it too but holy fuck is this shit coded badly. Also typos everywhere, maybe it was the new port that fucked things up, I don't know. I still have two other parties but I'm completely sour on the game now.

I am playing Labyrinth of Refrain right now. The exploration, story, soundtrack and mainly the combat system are awesome, but unfortunately the combat is wasted in tons of shitty encounters with zero challenge whatsoever. The only challenge are the bosses, so you wander from boss to boss literally button smashing attack, attack, attack every single time. It is getting tedious.
>>
>>3496361
You can always make money by creating new characters, selling all their starting gear, then deleting them. It's slow, tedious and painful, and with how early you are it's probably easier to restart, plus resurection has a chance to fail in this game. But technically, if you're willing to be a degenerate, you're never fucked for lack of money.
>>
>>3496604
NTA, but I also bought it, two negatives on first impression, no 2560x1440 option and the option menu was in Japanese by default, swapping it to English has some typos like vaid/invaid instead of valid for the vsync setting
Well I'll see how the actual game is
>>
>>3496626
I can confirm it. The translation seems to be AI or something. Which is fine, it is completely understandable. It is not, however, "full audio" as it states on the storepage. I'm interested in it but there's a lot I need to know. First, I need to see all the portraits. The last trailer showed that some classes have variations (there was multiple fighter girls for example) so I want to see what other classes get. I also need to know about how flexible the game is. Can you choose any portrait for any class? Are the personality/voice types class locked? Do skill tree's actually have anything interesting going on or are they tiny? How are weapon types handled? Are they very class restricted or can some classes use a decent variety?

>I need to see all the portraits
Every class has 4 portraits, 2 are different and have each 2 recolors.
>Can you choose any portrait for any class
Not when you choose it the first time. But your character can change jobs by sacrificing 10 levels. You keep your portrait but change classes.
>Are the personality/voice types class locked
No, you pick from 20 voices available. Personality is also not locked.
>Do skill tree's actually have anything interesting going on or are they tiny
Pic rel is the skilltree you can see at level 1. Reminds of EO. Dont know how much will be unlocked as you progress. You can keep scrolling down on that skilltree, so the whole thing didnt make it on one screenshot alone. Its mostly passives, though.
I dont know much about weapons and combat yet, i am still configuring my party and figuring out who i want to couple with.

I'll try to answer what I can from my first 10 minutes with the game, I haven't played further because I'll do my party planning without having the game turned on to squeeze out as much of the 2 hour refund limit as possible:
Overall everything aside from the Yuri theme feels heavily EO inspired, down to using the same words for some mechanics (like register and call formation), same locations in a similar menu based town, selling monster drops will unlock equipment etc.
Skill trees also seem very similar to EO, especially the earlier ones, with weapon masteries unlocking further skills and so on, some skill trees like Warrior seemed very straightforward and simple with trees for Sword/Axe skills along with some standalone attribute boosts as well as some passives that somehow factor into the relationship system, most classes seem to have at least two weapons they can go for, with some like Staff/Bow for Sylvan or Dagger/Bow for Scout definitely changing their playstyle quite a bit
Digger and Bestia seem to be the more unique and varied classes, Digger has access to different kinds of machinery weapons that all have a number of exclusive skills, while Bestia has different stances built around either damage, tanking/countering and speed/evasion
There's 4 portraits each, 2 general styles that have two variations, they're class locked, but you can class change for a loss of 10 levels, no idea if skills carry over in any way or if there's going to be subclassing later on or if you have to change the portrait when you change class
You get a choice between 12 affinities (translation is weird here, it seems to be values like Honesty/Honor/Friendship etc.) and 20 voices, all available to all classes, I assume those values affect relationship affinities, voices are just cosmetic I assume
The translation is kinda spotty, seems like lightly edited AI at best and as you can see from the screenshot some of it doesn't fit very well into the UI
>>
>>3496666
Since you're showing a screenshot of the elf archer class, then I'm assuming it means they're available from the start along with the beast girls? The dev isn't doing a great job of showing their game because those two classes aren't on the official website and I had the impression that they were unlocked later for some reason.

>>
>>3496665

You can change class at level one and every class is available as well. The devs usually do niche yuri card games and other shit, ill cut them some slack.
>>
>>3496666
I wonder how affinities work. Do girls with the same affinity gain a bonus? Or do they attract each other in another way? I gave the ones i want to pair up with the same affinity. Feels like it might be wrong, though.
>>
>>3496677
First I assumed it might be because of windowed mode, but the other anons screenshot has the same issue

>>
>>3496681
That's fine and all but they should at least have all the portraits/variations shown on their website. I shouldn't need to be asking for screenshots of stuff like this, it should be a quick lookup. Portraits are highly important to me in a game like this.

Seems like scouts are the most unloved class so far (I got all of these achievements by making one of each class and checking their skill trees)
Healer is at 100% currently, Warrior at 98,4% and Knight at 96,8%

After glancing at all of the skill trees, I'm still not quite sure about what party I want to make, Necromancer/Scout/Digger have a good amount of ailment moves, but they didn't go as far as stealing the bind system, I'll probably go with Warrior/Knight in the front and Bard/Wizard/Sylvan in the back with a focus on elemental damage

The digger girl looks sort of flat, what's her alt?
>>
>>3496711
This shit pisses me off so much. Lets take the best loli portrait in the game and then make it's alt a titty monster. They better have a loli version of a titty monster class to even things out, otherwise this is some goddam bullshit.

Played a bit further:
First floor enemies felt like picnic mode, doing single digit damage to my frontline, their durability was okay and the first group on the second floor made me turn back
Dungeon movement feels kinda jerky and unsmooth though and the map is just an automap

After the first dungeon delve I got to distribute my party members between Training/Gathering/Cooking (2 max each), I paired my intended pairs Warrior/Dancer and Sylvan/Wizard for Training/Gathering and in both cases one of them asked the other out on a date, both got rejected and felt displeased with the other, I chose the same personality for each of the pairs (Passion and Mystery respectively) and maybe that was a bad idea or it's just RNG
>>
>>3496778
Thanks, I guess it was too hard for the devs to just show this stuff on their website so I instead have to rely on random anons. I think I'll wait until it's out of EA in hopes that they add more portraits suited to my tastes. They went out of their way to completely redraw necromancer so titfags can use the class but didn't do the same for any busty classes. Only some slight reductions for some of them but that's not enough, niche Japanese devs are losing their touch. I hope the game-play is good, it's still on my radar but I'll wait and see.

Etrian Odyssey has the fun of making your own map with the mapmaking tools actually in the game, and is generally liked for having a big focus on team comp and battle strategies, while also having pretty nature-themed dungeons.

Artificial Dream in Arcadia is fun if you like Touhou characters, it's really a Touhou fangame version of the SNES Shin Megami Tensei games, so it's more like "monster management/fusion" on top of the dungeon crawling formula, except they're all Touhou girls.

1. Elminage Gothic is cheap on Steam, it was made by the Japanese team that had the license to make Wizardry games in Japan, when they lost the license they just kept making the games with a new name essentially. It's great value for what you pay, has multiple dungeons with a lot of content, and the devs carried forward a lot of the additions they'd made to Wizardry like the poisonous Werewolf and Dragonewt playable races.

2. The first three Wizardry games have a collected Japanese PS1 remake that can be switched to English in the options menu. The settings you need are in the picture.

3. The Etrian Odyssey series (already mentioned by >>3498741) is a popular DRPG series that differs quite a bit mechanically from Wizardry despite being another DRPG. I don't know how good the Steam ports are, but I seem to recall people saying they were overpriced, you might want to track down physical copies or emulate.

4. Not strictly a DRPG due to perspective, but Labyrinth of Touhou 2 is a game you should play. I honestly consider it one of the greatest games ever made, I'd recommend it to people who don't even know anything about Touhou.

EO4 as that other anon said is good. If you want to try out something more classic in the genre Wizardry Tales of The Forsaken Land is another good starting point imo. Also Path of The Abyss is a great starting point since it's pretty easy and very enjoyable.

I just started playing Elminage Original. I like how the story is vague and generalized for some odd reason. It's simple, and I love the pacing.

on fanatical you can get undernauts yumi for 15$ in the bento box collection. that game hardly goes on sale and i think it makes for a great first game, it has a lot of modern day convivences like changing classes and reskilling without any penalties, other games in the genre like EO give you a heavy level penalty on class changing. The story is pretty interesting and the flower mechanics to explore the dungeon is interesting. I'm only 3 bosses deep so far but it seems really fun for a first time playthrough. Oh also the Swtich mechanic is really strong and gives you an added layer of strategy in battle and dungeon trekking (since you can high cast mp cost spells for free with the offensive switch)
oh and it's 2 games for 15 there a couple other good options like zero collection if you dont have that

>>
>>3510351
Only played the Labyrinth of Touhou games out of those but it's my favorite combat in a dungeon crawler.

It does, but any ailment that isn't a turn delay or DoT functions as a secondary stat debuff on enemies instead of whatever it normally does. Buff and debuff management is central to gameplay.

Meh it was ok i guess.

There's a few, but I'm too lazy to list them out for a month old post.
I'll just say I played through both and PS1 version clicked with me better.

I know it's gonna be gachaslop, but I am waiting for Wizardry Variants Daphne, especially since they recently announced it's getting released sometime in October.

I only played Dungeon Travelers 2 and 2-2, but they only became any interesting combat wise late in the game and post game, Labyrinth of Touhou gets pretty complex quicker and gets even more insane in its postgame

Haven't played a dungeon crawler in a long while so I'm probably rusty, but I don't remember demon gaze 1 or 2 being remotely hard at all on vita unlike what I'm experiencing right now in DG2. I guess in my head I overwrote the portion of the game where all the random encounters are potentially 13+ respawning enemies with either AOE or one shots and the bosses attack 5-10 times each turn while having insane EVA with the parts before and after the endgame portion where you just sweep everything mindlessly.
Fun game, but Fran was better.

I want dungeon crawlers that let me recruit monsters or people or whatever. it doesnt NEED that but it'd be cool. And bonus if it lets you level the monster. Ive played a few dungeon crawlers that let you recruit and you cant level the monster up and thats no fun.

Have you tried Paper Sorcerer?
>>

You'd probably be better off asking the /mon/ thread, but I liked The Lost Child a lot. Enemy/demon designs can look a little too much like a default asset, but the game overall is good and you'll likely
still wind up loving some designs despite their style. Feels like an average occult anime from like the 90's to 2000's.
Moero Chronicle/Crystal is also okay if you don't mind the fanservice comedy angle and it being a more relaxed dungeon crawler, I guess. Demon Gaze 2 sort of lets you recruit new members, but it's probably the bare minimum that fits your requirements.

Sadly if you want this particular mix of genre (grid based drpg + monster taming/unit recruitment) you're probably just gonna have to settle for stuff like half finished games on itch, since SMT is the only franchise really aiming for it and it's not even doing dungeon crawlers nowadays.

Shin Megami Tensei
Elminage series
Wizardry Summoner (this one sucks)

Elminage 3 is literally the best for it, you can capture pretty much every NPC and monster, including the true final boss if you're crazy enough. But it's JP only.
>>
ive downloaded and collected as many of the shin megami and spinoffs as possible. most sadly do NOT let you level the monsters and they stay the same level. only a couple on ps2 let the monsters level up and get stronger.

ive heard wizardry summoner sucks and hadnt looked into it yet.

Does the earlier elminage games let you capture monsters? I think there was an english one on psp I could play if so.

Anons, I think I'm being filtered here. I added an unlevelled Libra to use more support/debuffs which is why she has like 150hp, but what is the general approach to bosses in this game from here on? The other ones before this guy I could kind of fumble my way through with damage to get here, so I guess I never learnt how to actually build my team.
Is it actually a good idea to lose some DPS for being able to apply more buffs/debuffs and heal often, or will I suffer from failing DPS checks with 2 support + 1 tank?
With the Tank are you supposed to be Guarding every turn or using Devotion every turn?
Is it just shit luck that everything from the circles in the castle is almost always way worse equipment than my current stuff?
Will I ever get another Astro Force Artifact to put Demon Gazer in the back row too?
>>
>>3513737
You can in all of them I think.
>>
>>3513737
Elminage Gothic does for sure. Summoners tame/summon monsters and have an option that changes them from a summon into a permanent party member.
