Wandering Sword is getting a big update in a couple of days, haven't tried the game yet.

Is it a good martial arts rpg? Played alot of Hero's Adventure: Road to Passion previously.
>>
Honestly wouldn't mind more martialarts focused rpgs that weren't chinese. Their Wuxia/Cultivaion tend to be a bit incestuous in all using the same concepts in how plots, events and even characters are formed.
Wouldn't mind a modern day martial arts adventure in the vein of street fighter or other fightign games settings. Sort of like SF6s World Tour mode if it was a proper fully developed rpg instead of a weird quasi-formed fighter side-mode thing.

This is another one hitting its full-release tomorrow.

It's a pretty good jrpg.
The encounters are a mini tactics screen (kinda like Live a Live) which can be done as turn based or real time.and you decide the exact prorgession of abilities and mvoesets.
They key feature of the game is interacting with npcs and companions for training/challenging them to not just earn progression points but also equipment, loot and possibly their moves.
One could say your progression is gated by whether you can beat NPCs who hoard good manuals/moves to learn. It may give octopath vibes, but it's not exactly the same as path actions.

There are secondary mechanic/attributess like crafting, cooking etc, but only crafting has true impact.

The story and way it progresses is pretty linear, but the map opens up at times allowing you to explore beyond your weight so to speak.

I found it pretty charming, but if I had to point a few issues, it woudl be:
a) Some companiosn barley interject and barely have content even in their own 'quest
b) Story falls off (the second to last act in particular ) excluding the very final encounter, the second to last act in particular
c)Not enough side content that is engaging beyond meeting someone and doing one fight (but there are a couple great side questlines).
d) Some things are unintutive(companion evenst and recruitment, some martial art books etc) that are hard to get without a guide.
e) Easy to break intended progression if you are determined to challenge everyone , get manuals and grind to get them mastered

The DLC they released is great. It replaced the bad act I mentioned before essentially, and has better quest and boss sequence than the main game. And more companion involvement too.
If the new update content is similar, it will be fun.

This guide seems pretty good at least, only thing its going to lack is obviously any new stuff added in the update.

Jade Empire is still the best, for one reason.
>>
>>3642090
That's it out, giving the demo a try. Starting off its notable there is a gimmick of you being able to choose a male or female player character like this was pokemon (most of these kungfu games you just play as a dude, an unknown little shrimp entering the kung fu world for the first time).

You also get to choose their background as well, and alot of them are marked NG+ only so it seems like the game has a focus on replayability.
After that there's a bunch of stats to put points in and traits to pick.
>>
>>3642051
It's great but getting 100% is a bit obtuse. Like the fucking harem ending that requires a lot of balancing to keep all the love points equal
>>

Technically, if you get maximum flags for all of them, you get it without needing to check who's got more or less.

I bought World of Kungfu after playing the demo, been having alot of fun with it and turned out to be well worth the buy especially since its on the cheaper side.

Only thing I'm missing is maybe information on its gimmicks/gameplay systems, but haven't ran into anything that snookered me in my ignorance for the first 10 hours

Yes it's very important to kill yourself for being a coward who can't make decisions and fears the unknown when deciding to play a video game.
>>

The two big updates vastly change the last two chapters of teh game. Doing two runs or making a save at a ceratin point and reloading is reccomended, but if you feel it's more one and done, do it with the expanded content, not vanilla.

A few non-spoilery tips:
Active party members decide who enters battle with you, but for story purposes, you can assume everyone is there. No need to dismiss people al,ost ever.
Cultivation Methods are your biggest priority. to learn and master. The rest come afterwards
Meridian distribution:Conception>Yang>Penetrating>powergap>Yin>gap>The other 2
With 1 exception, there is no downside in gifting people and sparring with them. Do it for everyone you meet, if you can.
Hidden weapons are the hardest style to focus relatively, since it's slow to prorgess and get some good unique shit. Sword and Fist are most supported, but Saber is also good and polearm is ok.
Only crafting has good AND tangible rewards, so disassemble some equipment and sell some for materials to do some crafting , plus learning from people.
Medicine does good stat boosting, but it's easier to consume what you find.

If you play on your own, you will miss companions, quests and items. If you can live with that, good. Guides exist, but they spoil shit necessarily to an extent. I'd say do a vanilla ran and then a completions run with the updates, personally.

Inheritance points carry over for NG+ for a boost. Do not do a vanilla extreme difficulty run.

>>3644568

I'm still new to the genre enough for it to be fascinating and fresh for me, but also exposed to wuxia early enough for China and its tropes to be what I'm entranced by for years and years.
Also I think you're not only advocating for classic kungfu moviesala Bruce Lee or Jackie Chan, you're also unironically looking for shounen series like Dragon Ball, Naruto, or Yuyu Hakusho. A lot of shounen not only have martial arts combat(or combat that's heavily choreographed like martial arts), they have things like chi-like energies and blasts of it, and constant focus on training and self-improvement. Even if they're not directly taking from wuxia(DB definitely is), they are taking from greater cultural pool that both stem from.

It used to be "expansion packs". DLC wasn't a thing until the mid-2000s and it started with horse armor.
>>
>>3645470
Expansion packs and DLCs were too different things.
DLC literally stands for downloadable content, and it used to be actual free patches and additional content.
Expansions were additional content that was paid but was often times as large as a new game of its own.
>>

What's the best weapon type to use?
>>
>>3647216
All weapon types get bullshit eventually.
Quick evaluation for a fresh game, sword>fist>saber>polearm>>>hidden weapons, but it's mostly for the first 3d of the game

The full explanation:
Best ones for new game are sword and fist . Easier to get manuals and synergy, get some good plot related ones, and you get some good plot related swords without crafting.
Sword is a bit better plus more useful ranges for the most part.

After that, you go with sabers and polearms (you get mroe companiosn who teach you their shit ealier on, both have good extra range on things).
Hidden weapons take a while to come online, since you have gaps on companiosn joining who can give you their shit, so it will be a bit mroe struggle for the first 3d of the game.

For a NG+ where you can inherit shit, you can set-up everything. In that regard, some say theoretically, polearms are the most bullshit for the latter half.

>>
>>3647282
The game is not hard by any means.
But if you start on harder difficulties, lack of relevant moves to learn and cultivation methods that boost them can be felt on the early game.
Starting on release on hard with secret weapons meant I had to run and do little damage on more challenging fights and only really got on tack after doing Leng Wuking's quest (six knacks is a great cultivation method'.

Same for polearms, you only really start to get bullshit when you do the beggar quest lines and recuit there

Speaking of Hero's Adventure its also getting a content update in November.

The announcement they put out mentions specific party members are getting new story content, also adding a "Sworn Brotherhood" mechanic.

Honestly it was fine when I last played it (which was quite awhile ago). I found the remaining slightly akward foreign flavour of the dialogue somewhat charming.

Yeah but what's important is the skills. Taixi, Shencang, Yindu, and Yangquan allow you to get turns faster through their effects.
Yongquan, Yinjiao, and Yangfu cripple the enemy, delaying their turns and reducing the actions they can take. And these work in tandem with Mountain Crush which lets you attack multiple times per turn, giving more chances to apply debuffs and further slow the enemy. The Wintry Blow cultivation method being equipped also lets you stack Frost at the same time. And then when you're getting two or more turns for every one the enemy is getting, and you have Yoga Sutras giving you regen per turn, you can then go with Soft Palm Strike and stack other DoTs while dishing out damage.
Most of your attack comes from gear and pills anyway, the strength stat isn't that important.

No.

She's too flat to ever be relevant in a Chinese narrative.

Yi is a pretty good protagonist, honestly. He's got the necessary level of being good natured and wanting to meddle but he's also totally fine with killing people when the situation asks for it.

>Wandering Sword
how customizable is your fighting style?
One reason I don't like tactics jrpgs is that usually you don't get to customize your character much, unless it's a proper fft clone. At least I want to be able to select what weapon the main character uses.
>>
>>3642865
>harem ending
>there's a harem ending
ok fine I'll buy your game, chinks
>>
>>3656511
Quite customizable.
It's not class system dependent, you have to assemble your moveset ( so you pick 4 tiers of attacks based on weapon you actually equip, movement skills and 5 cultivation methods which are buffs/passives).
And plenty of attacks and cultivation methods have synergies, either obvious ones (like from the same school) or less obvious ones(like ways to maximize crit chance or stacking various debuffs).
Finally, progression system is decided on how you spend points on 7 different linear progression trees (meridians). What you choose to focus first , whether you max one tree first and then the rest or do a balanced approach makes a difference.

The reason I do not say extremely is that for the most part, you focus on one weapon. Even if you learn moves from all weapons, you do not really switch in combat and spending points to master them all is not feasible in normal runs. Also, meridians are stat boosts/passives, not active skills (but that is covered by the martial arts moveset you assemble)
>>
>>3656220
Di Zui got killed before he even got to his third turn. Frosty Condor isn't there because she got OHKO'd. Just look at Yang Liutu's stats.
>>
>>3656520
nice, as long as I get to pick my weapon I'm happy enough.
>>
>>3656521
I know, I have done this fight before and the one following it if you did everything possible is even worse (it's not needed to win that one but gives you endgame equipment)
>>
>>3656527
>I have done this fight before
On extreme? Because right now I don't even have any way to make Yi stronger, I have every possible cultivation method offered by all NPCs up to this point and they're all maxed out along with all of his skills, and I have all the best gear possible on all the characters at this point too. And I'm struggling to even beat the fight leading up to the fight with Liutu, let alone beating him with stats that ridiculously inflated. You can't even use food buffs to make it any easier because it's the third fight in a row.
>>
So
I have this "1 year aniversary pack" in the inventory
it's basically a bunch of cheat items isn't it?
Should I not use them? I don't want to make the game too easy.

I am the guy you can thank for suggesting they use Captain Haddock swears on that LP instead of simpson quotes/insults. Not sure why the translator insisted on meme localization for some of the dialogue over explaining references, but sure

Is it true Wandering Sword is going to get a third/final big content update at some point? Saw some people talking about the possibility, the things they were pointing at as evidence could have been grasping at straws.

Is this just a straight copy of wandering sword, or are all games of this genre the same? Only every played wandering sword, but saw the yin-yang sword cross in the trailer, along with the movement squares and it seems like the exact same game with different art.

>>3642064
Chinese love to copy shit all the time. They do not have a concept of copyright so even if there is one on the west, they see it as strange. That is why all games are just copies of each other. This is also why there are chinese knock-offs of everything. From clothes, to drinks, to food, to games obviously.

>>3660750
Right, my bad
>>
Loved the game to bits, but I still missed a couple high end recipes for cooking and forging and some of the legacy items and some manuals still locked in inheritance.
I wonder if some manuals are locked behind bad/suboptimal decisions, like giving up companions or doing the violence path in Southern chronichles.
>>
>>3660753
some manuals are locked behind preventable plot deaths or even the old Nanjiang and endgame chapters
for example, getting the bad end to the Southern Chronicles campaign results in Ye Fei defending Xungu Pass instead of Bai Weiyi, who then dies but you get a sword manual from it
>>
>>3660762
I did play the vanilla routes last year.
The latter is a bummer, but I guess I could do a run for the last act and ignore every sidequest for the trainwrecklike not helping Di Zui or solving the murders, that's fewer hours than a fresh run .
>>
I just started playing yesterday, pretty fun so far

The open world means I end up in a lot of unwinnable fights and have to reload a lot. I guess you can cheese the progression by grinding duels?
>>
>>3660775
Grinding happens mostly with overworld enemies (for money, ingredients and martial points).
Duels can let you get lots of items, recipes and even some manuals but they break the game when you are strong enough to beat masters and consult them for endgame martial arts.
I'd advice against it in a fresh run
>>
>>3660425
believe it or not, different people do read threads and respond to old posts on slow boards
>>
>>3660777
Yeah I'm trying to avoid doing anything too game-breaking or following guides too much. I can generally accept some failures and reloading. It's a little frustrating though that there seems to be no indication whether a quest can be done right now or not.

For example this Earthshaking Dragon gigachad in some cave is a relatively early quest, but even when I went there with Mowen and Moqi in my party along with a decently levelled Hong and Bai Jin he beat our asses.
>>
>>3660422
No, the clones usually suck. Just look at what happened when Bruce Lee died.
>>
>>3660784
enemy name color changes based on a rough estimation of how strong they are compared to you
white > green > yellow > red, with red being the strongest
its not an absolute gauge of power and who you should or shouldn't fight, but it helps when you aren't fully familiar with the game and what your own power is
>>
>>3660835
Technically
grey>white > green > yellow > red.
Grey when you are far above them
>>
>>3660775
Here is something for you anon. Get that crafting going so that when you get those high level blueprints, you can make the super high level stuff. Materials are so easy to farm too and gear can make even the worse character decent without having to fill up their skill tree. Now, more than anything else. Please, PLEASE, look up a guide to see the companion shit. Some of that stuff is so fucking retarded. With you missing a single dialogue causing you to be unable to recruit someone which then later gives you a shittier ending because that character was important in the next part of the story.
>>
>>3660777
>Duels can let you get lots of items, recipes and even some manuals but they break the game when you are strong enough to beat masters and consult them for endgame martial arts.
But that's the literal main mechanic of the game. You're supposed to duel people to get good recipes and manuals.
>>
>>3660908
Sure, but if you grind and climb the duel ladder to the point you beat supreme masters while you are a rookie disciple, you kinda lost the plot IMO
>>
>>3660917
You talking about rookie story wise, or power level wise? You can only gift people 1 level higher then you, so you still have to do some of the story to gain access to people/abilities to raise your power level enough to even duel the supreme masters.
>>
>>3660897
The companion stuff was the one thing I was looking up a guide for, I didn't want to miss out on characters girls because I didn't talk to some obscure NPC before X event happens.

As for crafting, I just made my first Class V sword and I can see why it's important. The main thing was realizing I can disassemble all the crap items I've accumulated into useful parts. Also finding a vendor who sells Coal.
>>
>>3660938
I am sadden that the current steam guide spoils everything. Even though you could totally make a guide that spoils a lot less if one put effort into it. This is not even mentioning their sin of daring to say who best girl is.
>>
>>3660966
>Cries about an in-depth character recruitment guide revealing information

>>
>>3661963
