You need shelter to survive, you need resources to build it, things you kill or harvest give resources. You don't necessarily have to spend a whole lot of time farming or building, though it's certainly a major draw of the game. I know a few people that almost exclusively go to pvp servers, spend an hour or so building up a solid work space, and then spend the rest of their time harassing and killing other players and/or their bases. It's what you make of it I guess, but if you play single player, then yeah, you'll probably just be building and farming most of the time. There are dungeons to explore, but it's not really MMO quality, or even Skyrim quality.
