What's the verdict?
>>
>>3652830
Playing it, enjoying it.
Closing in on the Final Emperor (can't remember what amount of defeated 7 heroes it triggers on), abdicaited to make the Doll my emperor now heading off to deal with the endless storm.

Biggest complaints are some of the lazy design choices, like how the doll looks now or that the nereids having human legs after the intro quest cutscene.
>>
>>3652830
Lowkey one of the best JRPG release of the year.
>>
What's the most events you can complete with Gerard before hitting a timeskip, whats the optimal path involved there. Usually I just get the Dragon Fisting Gang to join then work with the Thieves Guild to help me take the fortress which is where his time as the Emperor cuts off.
Presumably you can put off helping Cat for a later generation, which is the kind of thing that drives my autism wild seeing characters like the specific original Strategist being alive for up to hundreds of years before you do their event.
>>
Does Subir always absorb the Narwhal in the remake even if you don't kill the rule of the seas? Maybe I just left him too late.
>>
>>3652830
The best jrpg just got better
>>
>>3652882
Martial artists -> gemstone mine -> meet dantarg -> don't complete the saigo quest -> toba -> witch's hut -> desert -> go wherever you want. You can't "finish" a quest or else you'll get a timeskip but you can kill the termite queen as long as you don't talk to the hunter afterwards. You can fight noel, rocbouquet, or bokhohn (unlike the original where gerard couldn't fight bokhohn)
>>
>>3652830
Same as every Saga game.
Quirky game that does some interesting things, but is overall held back by some bad or really strange design decisions. Typically a lot of tedium and getting fucked over because of obtuse things.
>>
>>3653055
>Typically a lot of tedium and getting fucked over because of obtuse things.
This has never happened to me in any SaGa game before so no
>>
>>3653066
It has, you just disregard it. Saga games frequently either poorly explain or don't explain at all relevant things.

Saga isn't really complicated, none of its battles really require forward planning and most of your ability pools are functionally identical vertical upgrades akin to a final fantasy game. It's more like a lot of garbage to create the illusion of depth, which goes to show square combat is fundamentally rotten and poorly designed. Also, while gameplay varies between titles, it's very video gamey and I have yet to play any saga game which attempts to capture anything remotely similar to the feeling of the kind of adventure you'd have in a tabletop rpg or a even just a crpg. Like the scenario design is just bad.
>>
>>3653108
This hasn't really reflected my experience with any of the games, but I've also seen this exact wording appear in SaGa threads before so I'm wondering if it's just one person saying this.
>>
>>3653112
Perhaps you can quote the post then because I've never posted in a saga thread before. Like there's no element of resource management and it encourages you to game tech growth, you would never play a tabletop rpg like this. It would never work on paper. So in this way it's kind of tactical and puzzle-y, but the problem is Japan is really, really bad at making those types of games and it winds up feeling like something for toddlers. Like this isn't even in the realm of rpgs any more, this is wargames, and it's pretty simple for a wargame.
>>
>>3653079
Grinding to master abilities is the shittiest and shallowest kind of skill progression, so not exactly something to flaunt.
>>
>>3653108
>none of its battles really require forward planning and most of your ability pools are functionally identical vertical upgrades
>the scenario design is just bad
You couldn't have been more wrong if you tried.
>while gameplay varies between titles, it's very video gamey
Wow, a video game is video gamey, what a shocker.
>>
>>3653124
>You couldn't have been more wrong if you tried
Which battle requires preparation beforehand? What scenario would you describe as good? Like there's that metaphor dungeon where you have to sneak around and there's a whole thing to get a secret item where you discover a secret passage, get a key, fight an optional boss, and deduce that it manipulates a statue to open a new optional path way. I would consider this a bad dungeon and the absolute minimum. SaGa doesn't ever do things like this at all.
>>
>>3653126
>there's that metaphor dungeon
And this is where I must bid you adieu, try being a little less obvious next time.
>>
Didn't this just get remade a few years ago?
>>
>>3653144

>>
>>3653138

>SaGa doesn't ever do things like this at all.
Have you actually played a single game in the series before? You'd know you're 100% utterly wrong but your whole posts are disingenuous so I don't think it even warrants serious replies
>>

You'll happily and smugly reply to the retard who doesn't know what he's talking about. You're saying things like
>your whole posts are disingenuous so I don't think it even warrants serious replies
Because you're an idiot and you don't have an answer. I'm only in here because I've noticed every time saga and metal max get bumped the board becomes complete garbage. I could care less about whatever retarded shit you're doing in here, but I know plenty about these awful games.
>>
Would be fun if there was more you could do in actually managing/utilising the power of your Empire, instead of it just being in the background while you do your JRPG adventuring.

Not an actual complaint since this was a remake of an existing game, there's no place to really utilise that sort of gameplay unless they changed things alot more.

Bit sad what results from that. Normally Coppelia persists between generations but if you make her an Empress and she "Becomes a Real Girl" then she dies off after one and you find her unmoving broken body tossed in the corrner of some store room in the castle without a care. Is there something insidious and draining about the Inheritance magic beyond just game mechanics, same way that if you have a regular character abdicate it treats them as having died off and skips to the next member of their class at the tavern even though everyone else is the same...

>>3652830
Basically, it's shit. The usual mechanics and progression are dumbed down and gated in stupid ways. The combat is made simpler, flashier and railroaded into abusing random nonsensical weaknesses and OD, you're not winning without it now. Other mechanics like debuffs and status effects got gutted with shitty grind to master (that has no place in SaGa) class abilities shoved in to restore them to previous level. Atrocious Skyrim markers shoved in your face at every step so you always know where the quests are and where you need to go instead of having to actually read the dialogue and figure it out yourself.
>>
Best party members for taking on in the final dungeon/post-game?
>>
It's sentimental but I did enjoy the little photos of the various characters going about their lives during the credits. Such a glimpse is nice to see since otherwise the core of the game is built on it being an interpersonal battle over generations of the Empire with your party members just being interchangable members of their class to fill slots.
>>
>>3653677
Sadly, you can only find him through the Storm event and defeating Garon in the Shipwreck, you just need to clear the South Longit quests quicker to trigger it.

The post you quoted is from a schizo that has constantly been shitposting about this game in almost every thread since before it came out. In prior threads he attempted to compare it to the original RS2 but was factually incorrect about many of the original game's mechanics, suggesting that he is merely posing as an oldfag. He has also admitted to posting on discord.
As for the substance of the quote is it totally wrong. The remake builds on the design of the original game and fans of the original RS2 are the ones most happy with this remake.
The most charitable interpretation I can make of the schizo's ramblings is that he wanted it to be more like Emerald Beyond rather than being true to the original RS2. But that is probably too generous, he is simply insane.

The Heroes will trigger their 2nd Forms regardless after the 4th Hero is killed.

If you want to fight Subier in his first form you need to have enough time pass to get the ghost ship to appear before you kill your 4th Hero. 6 generations worth of time (190-200 years) after you finish the initial Corsair quest is needed to get the rebellion the next generation and then pass 6 more generations to get the ghost ship quest to appear.

>>
an interesting detail; you can see the emperor inherit memories of your encounters during his or her time.
>>
>>3655773
>starts yapping about remake le bad while dicksucking emerald beyond or unlimited saga
It’s really quite ironic you say that, considering Unlimited is a game where Kawazu was given full creative freedom to make exactly the game he wanted to make, and this on the other hand is a game that takes Kawazu’s original vision and alters it significantly without his input. This remake seems like a good game on its own merits from what I’ve seen, and I’m looking forward to playing it when it goes on sale, but it’s obvious that the main target audience is not old time fans of Saga and Kawazu.
>>
>>3656080
Is it really changed all that much? The stuff that makes the biggest difference are QoL features that I don't think anyone sane would find objectionable.
>>
>>3656080
>this on the other hand is a game that takes Kawazu’s original vision and alters it significantly without his input
Like the anon above said, most of the changes are non-intrusive and fairly welcome. The vision is still there and nothing that makes it a SaGa game was removed. While yes, on top of the much needed QoL there's also some debatably unnecessary fluff in the form of the passive class abilities and the revamped combat, and the guidance with the minimap and quest markers is a little handholdy (you can turn it off though which is a plus), it only builds on top of what was already there without sacrificing any of the core concepts.
>it’s obvious that the main target audience is not old time fans of Saga and Kawazu
This couldn't be further from the truth too, while I can agree that RS2 specifically was chosen because it's one of the most, if not the most, approachable SaGa games, it still is a love letter to the fans as much as it is an attempt to gather new players.
>>
>>3655773
nta but Unlimited Saga is really great. My main gripes with it are that outside of a few campaigns (like Armic's) it's far too linear, some of its skills are too unbalanced and magic is a chore to learn (and honestly pretty niche). Outside of that it has the best character building and dungeons out of all SaGa games by far.
I suggest you try it out before maliciously shitposting about it.
>>
>>3656096
The remake significantly changed it though, you don't have to be sagafag to see that. The sole fact that you have an AoE healing spell directly contradicts the original design philosophy of focusing on one's defensive options as you weren't able to degenerate in these FF-esque healing loops, not to mention those bloated damage and HP values you'd only ever see in trash like aabeta. And the by far biggest shortcoming of RS2, its lackluster dungeons, got no revamping whatsoever.
RS2 was also chosen because it's very popular and due to its timeless inheritance mechanics, not because the original was approachable, far from it.
The only reason why newfags even managed to beat the remaster was because they kept that new dungeon from the 2011 phone version which gave access to all kinds of ridiculously powerful gear and formation.
>>
>>3656089
look in the previous threads. They changed the entire weakness system
>>
>>3656132
Is it meaningfully changed or does it result in mostly the same experience?
>>
>>3656134
Is flipping the entire combat on its head and railroading you into just spamming the weaknesses, as well as giving you free access to an AoE healing spell that usually do not exist in the rest of the series and go against the original combat design a meaningful enough change for you?

NTA but if you explore pretty throughly, you'll probably finish in the high 900s/low 1000s by the end of the game, especially when some areas are absurdly tight. Mr. S randomly giving you double bonuses can lead to some serious inflation too.

>one "choice" lets you get something new

First choice in the game that some people may unwittingly make is with the monks and cave quest as fighting anything other than Gel Monster has a different outcome.
The Cumberland civil war plays out differently depending on your choice, it's not simply a fail state.
Depending on when the player finds Noel, you can make a deal with him
There's also the volcano quest at Comroon, and the Narwhale quest.
Kzinssie's challenge can also be intentionally ignored by the player
I'm not an expert at RomSaGa2 and don't know how many scenarios can actually play out in the game, and I also think allowing the player to tackle many of the scenarios in an order of their choosing as well as having a wide range of party combinations along with letting the player specialize the Emperor in weapons and spells of their choosing offers a decent amount of replayability to the game, especially considering the game isn't that long. That along with various fail states, which you might not value but are components of the game as they encourage the player to "get things right on their next run" which actually does offer meaning to them. All of this was packaged in a 1993 Super Nintendo game, I don't know how much you can reasonably expect from games from that era, it's already more than most of its contemporaries. The remake is mostly faithful and it's only goal was to allow a younger generation of people to experience one of the most popular games on the SNES
>>
>>3663033
>First choice in the game that some people may unwittingly make is with the monks
That's not a choice: it's a punishment for retards that don't read.
Not even going to bother with the rest of your post if you open with that shit.
>>
>>3663039
Punishment for a player's actions are choices the player makes
I see you're a fucking disingenuous retard, here's your last (you)
>>
>>3663039
>punishment
Except that you can still get the fighters as a class and restore their honor
>>
>>3663039
>for retards that didn't read
Yeah, the dialogue indicates that one choice involves cooperation with the martial artists whereas the other supplants their authority. Naturally the latter choice leads to slightly greater imperial revenue, as you are not sharing control of the neighboring town with the martial artists. And if you pick a martial artist as your emperor at some point you will revive the dragon's lair, thus allowing you to get the best of both worlds.

Overall I agree that quests generally have a 'best outcome' and a worse outcome. But my replays have varied considerably (in old versions, but the remake hasn't changed that stuff) because I don't feel obligated to get the 'best outcome' in every quest every time I play the game. Personally I like designing my playthroughs around the timeskip/calendar system.
>>
>>3663045
Why would you ever knowingly choose a worse option, one that literally gets you nothing?
If it's for RP shit then it's meaningless.
>>
>>3663047
Because it's a lengthy process for a minor benefit.
Same with unlocking the messina mine then taking the land route to the pirate base. Technically you get extra loot, but in most playthroughs I don't want it. So unless I'm specifically aiming to collect everything and create the most optimized endgame save file, I usually prefer to take the more efficient route.

As a bonus, both Cat and Falcon returned after 900 years. so much for sparking whatever skills would have glimmered off of dual gunner, aim, charge, and instant shot for the training room. It's the year 1900.
>>
>>3662513
Yeah, this remake is just the original but somehow more mindless, less freeform and with less detail in some areas too.
It should have been the upgrade the other remakes were, but it wasn't handled by the actual team so we got this mediocre, cheap nostalgiabait that only appeals to casuals, none of the problems of the original release were fixed and none of the potential the original had for a full remake was fulfilled, it's very frustrating because what was great 30 years ago is just barely acceptable now for anyone who actually plays games, especially other SaGa games.

Spiritual successors like Legend of Legacy or Alliance Alive are your safest bet, there's also various indies like Legend of Varonis, Genius of Sappheiros or Hat World that are explicitly inspired by the SaGa games.
Many SaGa fans like Metal Max games because they tend to be just as open, but they're still largely different when it comes to everything else, think DQ3 meets classic Wasteland, they're really good if you like that sort of stuff but avoid the recent Xeno games, play Returns and the DS remakes instead, the PS2 Metal Saga is also okay but really, start with Returns or the NES original if you feel like you can withstand some true retro stuff.

Zill O'll Infinite on the PS2. There is an English patch if you aren't into moonrunes. The difficulty is not that high though unless you intentionally stay underleveled. I think it fits the theme of the game very well since the MC have great potential in lore but the main antagonist is fate which is an insane and whimsical goddess you can't fight physically. You basically have to fight against the system to get the best ending. But outside of that there are plenty of side stuff to do and some of the other endings are interesting to see too. I think the captures the sense of adventure well.
Also maybe try World of Horror.

Beat the demo on hard. Kzinssie took multiple attempts, because he kept on one-shotting party members with his sword abilities. I mainly had Leon spam Double Cut and did a big chunk of damage with that unison ability that combined Double Cut and Double Stab. Will all the bosses be this hard?

big "problem" with the game is due to how non-linear it is you will sometimes run into roadblocks and heroes are definitely supposed to be bosses you tackle somewhat later on. hell, I think you can fight at least one with the first real emperor you choose.

You really only get reliably stronger through equipment or training -> equipment or training requires jewels/money -> jewels/money can only be (as easily) gotten through exploration or quest completions. In this case should I minimize battling outside of quest related progression or if an enemy blocks my path?

>2
Because of the enemy/battle scaling, is it possible for me to run into an encounter that I purely can't beat because of stats alone? Or one thaat I can't beat BECAUSE I didn't do enough battling up until that point. And how can I tell when it's just stats and not bad strategy?

>3
Any reason at all not to have a full party at all and every time?

>4
Should I be focusing on a single region or quests within a single region or can I really just go wherever interests me? Does time past at all through traveling between them?

>5
Do enemies inside of dungeons respawn at all? I can't tell if they respawn when you leave the area or the entire region or if it's just time based.
>>
>>3671855
>1
Battles do slowly boost your stats, and stronger enemies are more likely to trigger a stat boost. But battling slowly advances the in game 'clock', so if you want to do all the quests, you do have to watch what you're fighting (don't actually try this until you know the game like the back of your hand). Don't worry about it too much; the game's NG+ system gives you more Jewels with each playthrough (actually total quests completed); the first one is intended to be scuffed as you learn the ropes.
Anyway, good weapons aren't nearly as important to your power level as stronger moves and good armor are, and Defense Mode is probably the most accessible game breaker there is. The "I want to faceroll the game" strat is to make some Rosalian Officers, put their weapons into defense mode, and slowly buy up Leg Mail, Conqueror's Gloves, Fashionable Helms, and Field Mail to make a squad of almost invincible warriors.
>2
You're more likely to find a stationary boss that will just kick your ass until you get stronger. The highest tier enemies are pretty beefy, but you get a lot of time to prepare. Usually you can tell if you're outclassed if you're one-shot by bosses faster than you can bring allies back up.
>3
Yes, you want to run a full party, unless you're playing PS2 rules and abusing running or going for Frielei or Dragon Knight. The Remaster changed running mechanics to only costing 1 LP and Frielei now has an always-available recruitment location, so a full party is just better.
>4
You want to check out as much of the world as possible to snatch up new quests that have opened up with increasing Event Rank, buy better goods, et cetera. Time doesn't pass while moving, only through battles.
>5
Enemies stay dead and only respawn when you travel to a new area on the world map. It's just that spawn locations are just kind of arbitrary. If you're looking for a particular monster (Ecology quests) you can go in and out of a nearby town until the right ones spawn.

are you playing the remaster? use rapid stream formation and mist cover + feint to guarantee a stun every turn
>>
>>3672864
>feint spam
I'm playing the remaster right now, actually absolutely loving it, but this is my only gripe. There are bosses like this every so often (eg Guardian, Termite Queen) where the only legit strategy is apparently stun-locking. Because if you don't, they use some ooga-booga tech that wipes your entire party in a single turn.
Only other gripe is I wish I could just go anywhere from the map and didn't have to stop in certain places / traverse the Savannah area multiple times (I'm guessing the remake fixes that)
>>
>>3672904
yes, although I think that may be the consequence of running into overpowered bosses out of order. a lot of those FUCK YOU, DIE moves can be trivialized if you fight the battles later on. good fights let you back out and flee.
>>
>>3672909
Multiple save files is a must because you can fuck yourself not only by decisions, but also by picking fights that are way beyond you and you can't back out anymore. Like Rocbouquet with a male Emperor, for example.

Been playing this but really annoyed at the time skips and having to choose 1000 new emperors. This breaks the continuity of an RPG, whats the point? Also how does doing a few quests and fighting a boss make more than a 100 years pass by while my revenue and city upgrades are static? Its still the same party but with different names and I have to waste time recruiting and re-equipping them. These time skips are horribly immersion-breaking. You'd think that they'd have guns by now

iirc last time they had some show in december they didn't do any big announcement, like the Romancing Saga 2 remake was announced in a summer direct instead
But since there's currently nothing on the horizon I could see them teasing some stuff, Romancing Saga 3 remake in the same style would be a no brainer, but I think Kawazu wanted to do Saga Frontier 2

Just finished it in hardmode. The +100% damage by overdrive break the game so much at the end that every heroes get killed within 2 or 3 turns with a double overdrive, the queen p2 is also a joke, a 5 man overdrive does -80% or -90% of her hp bar.

Judging from the demo, this game both looks, sounds and plays like just another extremely generic and uninteresting Square Enix shovelware title. Does it get better or is it just the usual Squenix snoozefest?

The game's main draw is the non-linear campaign and generational progression systems. The demo was just the tutorial leading up to that.

Unlimited Saga deserves a redemption remake but SaGa Frontier 2 also deserves one since it's Kawazu's other normie potential SaGa game, especially since GoTfags will eat its plot up.

I'd argue Frontier 2 probably needs it more while RS2 is fresh in people's minds because it also plays with generations albeit to a much smaller degree.

They're not in the remaster but maybe they are in the remake. You get magic by going to the incantation lab and assigning spells. You do need a minimum amount of a spell school level to learn stronger spells.

>They are not, some bosses can be stunlocked, others can be paralyzed or confused
this is important to note: stun and paralysis are two separate statuses bosses can be individually immune or weak to.
>>
>>3685618
What people despise about Unlimited isn't the combat reel system, weapon durability or TTRPG exploration, it is the fucking panel levelling system which fundamentally undermines what SaGa is about. It sucks HARD. I am willing to even give the shared BP of Scarlet Grace and Emerald Beyond a pass as even the enemies had the same turn economy system.
>>
>>3685641
So Deep One just dodges paralyze most of the time. Looks like I need to grind my mage up to be worth a damn, but that will just make him even stronger, wont it? Feels like this fight is all about praying to the RNG gods for paralyze to hit and the boss to attack my tank.

This Dark Dragon nigger was intense on classic mode going in blind and not starting over to prep, lmao. I had 2 characters capable of stun, one of which dealt 32 damage and the other a tank with the lowest possible speed.
>>
How the fuck are you guys having hard time in classic mode? Are you running away too much from the normal battles or grinding too much?
>>
>>3686802
I suspect some people are taking "don't battle" a bit too seriously.
>>
>>3686802
You can't magically bypass attacks that one-shot your characters by deal 2x your max health with 150+ physical defense and buffs. I'm not having a "hard time" with classic mode. This dragon was 10 times stronger than anything I've encountered in the game thus far, and that's why I posted. You're not leaving a good impression of SaGa fandom.
>>
>>3686494
if you want to outspeed the enemy you can use the corsair formation or the martial artist formation paired with a fast character. If you want your stuns to connect, you'll have better luck with the non-damaging feint skill and the female ranger's passive ability increases the success rate.
>>3686873
fuck the saga fandom
>>
>>3686883
I've just used the Divine Wall formation for most of the game, and my party setup has been random and based on unlocking abilities and glimmering new techs and spells, rather than min-maxing or sticking to an efficient setup. It's been smooth sailing with the exception of this one boss, which uniquely dealt 400 - 500 to the whole team with its magic AoE and 1200 - 1600 with its single target physical attack at around 620 battles prior to the Final Emperor. None of the Seven Heroes have even been remotely close to its damage output thus far.

With regards to RS2R, BR is incredibly lenient due to it essentially being frozen until you meet certain plot thresholds, so you're free to fight everything in each dungeon and do whatever random shit you want as long as you have a cursory understanding on team building.
