Did I spoil the earlier Persona games by playing this first?
I see people complain about this series and I have to assume it's due to burnout, because the high school sim and overall gameplay loop is extremely comfy and addictive.

I've noticed that people who love to use the phrase "gameplay loop" are invariably quite dumb. Why is that?

not really, they are entirely different games with wildly different design choices, you may like them

no

That's surprising, I assumed they were all mostly similar and iterative. "Wildly different" makes me think they're as different as FF games from 6 onward.

If you mean in terms of story, for the most part no. Each game involves a different cast, a different conflict, and is set in a different location. There will be references and things along those lines, if you played the previous games that you would recognize if you did play them, but for the most part, the stories are separate. If you mean in terms of gameplay, 5 Royal has the most QOL and refinement with 3 Reload right after it. It might make playing previous mainline games harder (or 4 Golden at the very least, if you don't intend to play 1 & 2 since they're more their own thing now)

Yeah sorry, I should've said ruin. Sounds like this might be good because I can learn the ropes in an easier game. When I want to play another I'm definitely thinking the PS2 games.

play digital devil saga

Sorry I dropped it 13 hours in at the fantasy funhouse with the weird fag talking at me through a loudspeaker. Played it for a while but it took me out of the setting.
I could go back at some point except the high school simulator is more fun.

you might dislike the level layout of persona 3 and persona 4 since every dungeon is randomly generated (with a few exceptions per floor in each game) like mementos, there's no big static dungeon design like the palaces. that being said, if you don't care about that, then they each have their own charms for sure. the stories and cast are each definitely worth experiencing.
persona 3 reload will probably be the most familiar for you if you've only played 5.
pretty much exactly as >>3653830 said

Gameplay wise? Maybe.
Going from P5R or P3R to anything older than P4G might be jarring.
The rest is entirely different though; locations, characters and story.
