Probably just retarded.
Been 20 years since I played this but I don't remember being able to get softlocked in the library.
This game's reputation for softlocking comes from a boss battle later on right after a save where if you aren't prepared properly you just get dunked on with no way to go back.
The based developers repeated this as a trope in the sequel for the lulz.
