Hardcore classic wow is the only mmo that truly feels like an mmo to me, it brutally mogs every other mmo I've ever experienced. Having someone help you randomly in the world feels incredible, and when you leave people say things like "stay safe out there' and take the game seriously. Seeing someone 10 levels later and you both are still alive feels so fucking good, you're both happy to see each other and instantly feel good talking to each other it's crazy. Having a party member die in a dungeon is fucking devastating. It all feels real, why won't someone make a new mmo like this? Holy fuck I wish companies made new games that didn't suck

I gotta agree it is pretty fucking rad. In other mmos, if I am not on a fast-track to max level, I feel like I am wasting my time. Because that is where the real game is at (then often times find out that end-game activities are bad or not interesting enough, but that is another issue)

Because all I accomplish is bumbling around for 3 hours, which I could achieve in one, if I leveled elsewhere, or picked up the quests in a more optimal order.
In hardcore, it turns into a challenge though. Playing slower isn't a waste of time. Every enemy defeated, every quest completed, ever piece of gear I won, feels like really achieving things. It's like MMO animes, where people play with stakes.

People have far more incentive to group up with others, because it is literally dangerous to go alone. You have to hunt carefully, because pulling 3 mobs is almost certain death, unless you got an exit strategy.
Fucking consumables almost never rot away in your inventory, because every little buff helps. There is no point to hold it for later, when you've already outpaced the bonus.

All in all an exhilarating experience, a pity no other MMO does it, except maybe EVE Online, but that is a different beast altogether than regular MMOs

Similar feel with FF11 Horizon, where the whole game is relevant (not just the latest raid/zone) and there is a long line of progression and a community feel, though there is no permadeath.

The lack of any "real" tangible consequences for dying definitely holds MMOs back. I don't think hardcore mode is the answer for any mainstream game, but every MMO either makes it too easy to gank/grief such that there are no consequences for it that are significant enough to matter OR the rules/mechanics prevent such behavior altogether which diminishes immersion. Going to war or playing like a criminal should be allowed, but the potential consequences should make you nervous (and thus be more thrilling when you succeed). If anyone creates a game that solves these issues, it'll be huge.

It's an official server type. If you die your character gets deleted and it announces to the entire server what level you were and what killed you so you get to see dozens of people type F or RIPBOZO when someone dies. If you hit max level, it also announces to the entire server and you will get flooded with messages from people. Also wild to see entire dungeon (or raid) groups wipe because it announces all the deaths. Since people constantly die and make new characters low level zones stay populated, and inflation is much slower

This is how central banks think, too. They think that’s it’s okay to inflate the currency by printing more of it, because they can “destroy” money or remove it from the economy by taking in tax revenue.

The idea of hardcore is great, but no insurance policy for your internet connection shitting out will always be awful. Even just setting aside people abusing it to avoid death, the mere fact that at any moment, some random outage could cost you your time is not what i would call fun. i would want my death to be the result of my own actions, and the current technology can't guarantee that.
