How many people are there here who were born in the early 90s have played the good ultima games (up to Ultima VIII)?Underworld and Worlds of Ultima included.
not me, i was born in the early 80s, bot-kun
>>3659873I'm not a robot, I am a real boy
I only liked the games designed by Steve Beeman (now transitioned into Siobhan Beeman)
I was born in the mid 80s and I haven’t played any Ultima games. I tried to play 4 once and it was simply too archaic.
Born in '91, but only bothered to play IV, VI and VII within the last 10-15 years.
>>3659897based
i played ultima on an apple ][ when i was a smol boy, but all i did was get my ass beat and have no idea what was going on at all, so i'm not sure if that counts
>>3659852I played and finished all of them without gay patches/mods and without gay exult.
>>3659852Born in 70s. Played U1, U3-U5 on a C64. Skipped U2 b/c rumor was it was ass and seem incomprehensible after U3 (which was the first one played).Played U6-U9 on PCs. Including off-shoot like Worlds of Ultima and Ultima Underworld(s).U7-7.5 were amazing back in 93; but they aged like ass and way simpler than I remember them being. UU was unique and fun for what it was; there wasn't much like it before. UU2 was cool bb/c it was basically U7.25 lore-wise until Serpent Isle came out.U8 was Mario The Avatar. U9 was so fucking disappointing that it deserves all of the hate forever. I even bought the big-box collectors edition thinking it was return to form after U8.As an oldfag, U5 is the best one of all of them.
>>3660248Also, picrel is things that were promised that did not happen (U8 ending). If you played UU2, you thought you were going to get post-apocalypse Britannia for U9
>>3659852Ultima V is the crack hit I took when I was like 12 whose high I have been chasing ever since. I was not born in the 90s.
Not gonna lie, the reason I never played Ultima is because I heard about the virtues thing, made me think it's forced to play a goodie two shoes.
Ultima os cringe because of Garriot's OC self inserts and friends. I only like Worlds of Ultima 2 because it's by Warren Spector.>>3659884May she Rest in Power.
I played Ultima IV on release in 1984 and I was incredibly lucky because that was my first ever RPG and blew me away. played every ultima since. U7 is the best.as for my age I am older then Death
How do I get this game to run on a modern PC and interact with it like it's Balder Gate style?
>>3659852Born in the 70s. Played and finished all of them; admittedly I used the debug menu on 8 because that game was a fucking pathetic joke.Shroud sucks my nuts. Yes, that's my signed U4 map. U4 for life.
>>3659852I am old enough to have played Ultima 1 and 3 when they were less than 10 years old, before any JRPGs. But I never really went past that. I played a small amount of 4 but it was too esoteric for me back then and I never really gave the series the benefit of the doubt again. I might have been blown away by Ultima 7 in the early '90s but I didn't try it until a point where I wasn't impressed by click and dragging a loaf of bread around.
>>3662497>a point where I wasn't impressed by click and dragging a loaf of bread aroundHell, I'm still impressed with this IRL
So which game should I start with
>>3664965Start with 4.>t. never played any of them
>Ultim-ACK!
8 was cool. I played it on Windows 3.1 I think. I wonder if any of them were ported to mobile in a decent fashion.
>>3659852Dunno if 1995 counts as early 90s, but I tried the DOS version of Ultima 1 a bit ago, I really should get back into it. The age means nothing to me since my interest is grassroot.I found it hard to survive even a single bandit fight in the overworld. If anyone has any advice (other than hurr durr play this other game instead), I'd greatly appreciate. Trying to avoid looking up guides if I can
>>3659852I have tried many times to enjoy Ultima games, but I can't. They aren't for me, but they look very great, unfortunate
So if I understand correctly, Ultima has great RPG mechanics, but unfortunately the characters are terrible, you're forced to play a goody two shoes and the story is supremely linear, yes?
>>3665058>forced to play a goody two shoesHa ha. Avatar does whatever he wants. Kills, steals, fucks, armageddons.
>>3665165But that's bad!
>>3665058only started getting linear with 7-2
>>3665306*evil
>>3665306Sorry, I meant to say the Avatar gets Iolo to do those things.
>>3665054It is unfortunate. Nothing beats having your dual wielding mouse companion fuck a gypsy prostitute.
What is the best Ultima to start with? 7?
>>3666018Ultima I
>>3666007There has to be some way to mold my brain into enjoying it. Because I really do want to, if only just to experience the whole series
>>3666018Akalabeth
>>3666116Read the manuals, print or write down the controls. You'll get used to them quickly and they don't change a lot for much of the series.Watch part of a let's play to get an idea of what to do to get started. Start a character and get a feel, then restart after learning from your mistakes.Progress in some of the earlier games may rely on stealing from the same chests or killing guards instead of monsters. If the dungeons are intimidating, there are spells to help you easily navigate. In some of the games they are optional or have ways to bypass. You may even find that you enjoy them.If you feel like the early games are too grindy, there is usually an easier way of doing things. Think outside the box, try something weird or take some risks. When you feel like the game is just too old and you want to skip to the next, don't. Stick with it and keep feeling it out. I felt the same and I'm glad I didn't give up.Mods are not needed. Gog versions run fine. Avoid exult at least for a first playthrough of Ultima VII and Serpent Isle. It's not necessary, makes the UI look like a chineese knockoff and introduces more bugs and freezes. Try it after to see the difference.
>>3666116>>3666202Also old RPGs look really complex and intimidating, but once you start playing and learn how they work, you'll find they are actually pretty simplistic.
>>3666018Why are you asking again? See >>3664965and answered here>>3664970
Maybe you young 'uns should instead watch one of those VeeTuber (anime girls) play Ultima.
I didn't play Ultima till Ultima Online. False Prophet is probably the best, though.
>>3666839are there any cute Japanese anime girls who play of school RPGs like Ultima!?!??
Zoomer here, I started with Underworld and loved it. Then I tried 4 and it filtered me hardShould I try a console port or something, or let it go for now and come back to Ultima after getting more used to older RPGs?
>>3662026The Exult rebuild engine, which works on U7, U7.5 and now U6. https://exult.sourceforge.io/
>>3664965>>3666018Ultima 4. If those graphics are too old for you, try U6. Avoid 1-3 and U8, 9 unless you're a completionist. Personally my favorite is Ultima 7.5 Serpent Isle, but that's quite late in the metaplot story.
>>3668901ultima 7 is just dad gamer skyrim
>>3667206Most Ultima games were topdown/isometric, so if you're used to 3D first-person view gaming then it will take a while to adjust. Have you played Baldur's Gate, Fallout or other Infinity Engine games? Those are more modern and topdown so you can get used to it with them first.
>>3668906insane that you unironically answered that post, why did you do that
>>3668906>ave you played Baldur's Gate, Fallout or other Infinity Engine games? Those are more modern and topdown so you can get used to it with them first. This is the wrong way to learn RPGs. Telling people to play casual retard games just floods the genre with retarded casuals. And then you get an army of biodrones that are too dumb to play anything else. RPGs are not hard. If you feel "filtered" then you just don't want to play them. Reading the manually, learning the systems, taking notes, paying attention to the world, these are all behaviors that people should internalize. Remember when Monomyth came out and a handful of people here tore through it whereas rpg codex couldn't even get halfway through the game? That's what happens when you spoonfeed retards. You get a community full of idiots that are too dumb to contribute anything and then its just a death spiral of increasingly boring and shit content.
>>3668906I am used to topdown games, I just couldn't really get into Ultima 4. I spent 2 days going around and talking to people in towns and taking notes, got a party member, managed to go into a dungeon but then I died and couldn't find it againIt felt like I was doing something wrong and didn't make any progress
Has anyone played Skald? Is it really "like Ultima"?
>>3659852My first crpg was ultima exodus...but I played it late. Id say 1987, I was 11 years old. Even with a guide book it took me a year. Played the rest of the series on various platforms. My favorite was actually ultima 4 though.
I played IX, because I am based.
>>3668912>Remember when Monomyth came out and a handful of people here tore through it whereas rpg codex couldn't even get halfway through the game?..you keep tabs on them?
>>3669221No its like goldbox
Worlds of Ultima bros, who did it better? Two masterpieces for boomershttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yg57OXSFe_Qhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PHOpKKX4XRQJust one, for the zoomieshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUFOSJZJVM4
>>3670294The fat neckbeard literally plagiarized MrEdders's video!t. not MrEdders123
>>3667206If you want a good port of U4 the Master System version is the best by far. You might be better off trying a later Ultima though, I'd try U7 if you haven't already.
>>36660187 is the most modern and accessible of the classic Ultima games, so it's a good place to ease yourself in.
