Anything worth mentioning other than SKALD (miniscule Ultima-inspired RPG with "Lovecraftian elements") or "Drova" - Gothic in 2D, but it's Just 2D because the developers are all programmers, so 2D is the only kind of graphics they could do?

for me it's Baldurs Gate 3, because I waited until it was 10% off to buy it on Steam™
>>3668745>I have to make a thread contributing absolutely nothing of value and begging others to entertain me because I'm a retard>everyone else is braindeadDid you honestly think no one thought to make a "what are some video games that can out in 2024" thread? Do you think this is contributing? Are you for real right now?

If you want attention so badly just go to /b/ and shove a screwdriver up your ass.
I get it, lil bro, you posted here for 2 years already so you are a big oldfag with very valuable opinions and me asking to share them for free is a huge crime. Maybe you can go back where you came from now.

I am hyperventilating and having a meltie because you insulted my favorite, OP.
>>3668760Is the 3rd one Veilguard? I didn't even know.
Only worthwhile rpg this year is Enchant Farm (2015).
At the start of the year I thought maybe it'd be a tie betwen Yakuza 8, Eiyuden, SMTV:V and SaGa with maybe DT taking the MMO crown. At the end of the year I can say that the only competition to SaGa was an unannounced SaGa remake...there was no good MMO; a single midcore raid can't redeem an MMO after months of no content. There were people shilling this as the year of the rpg and we really didn't get it. Bunch of remakes, expansion packs and 1 new game.Without a doubt the winner was Emerald Beyond. This year WOULD have been the RPG year of the decade had every year previous not existed. Ports and remakes lessened the impact. As for Yakuza. It was alright, battle system was an improvement over 7. DLC was cancer, story was shit. It's a lesser game for being attached to the franchise and it sunk even farther when the redditor action Majima game was announced in Autumn.
>>3668770That's a strategy game
>>3668737Enchant Farm is my personal GOTY so far. Skald was pretty cool. Astlibra DLC was worse than the main game, but still okay. Unicorn Overlord sucked ass. That's about it, haven't played any other new RPGs. Dragon Age died with 2, and I'm not really interested in Persona 6.Might give Drova and the Romancing SaGa 2 remake a try. Love the original and I heard that the remake is pretty accurate.
>>3668783>Without a doubt the winner was Emerald Beyond.grim
>>3668737>Your Favorite 2024 RPGRebirth, by far.
>>3668737Granblue fantasy relink. Next question.
>>3668995P3R was better than Metaphor thoughbeit
Would Ys Nordics count? Otherwise Unicorn Overlord I guess.
>>3669078If a fucking ys game is your favorite rpg of the year you have brain problems. Those games are the bare minimum a game needs to have to be called an rpg.
>>3668737Granblue Fantasy Relink is my GOTY for 2024. Having played the gacha for 7 years, I was looking forward to seeing the franchise realized in a high production value 3D RPG, and Relink is actually good on its own merits, not just as a spinoff for gacha fans. Great aesthetics and soundtrack as expected. Decent story. Sank 300 hours into it. Beating Lucilius felt like an accomplishment.
>>3668737Probably Hat World New Testament. If you haven't taken a look at it and you enjoy jrpgs in the slightest, you really should. Also had fun with Etrian Odyssey V but I have some issues with it that are a bit too hard to ignore.
I only purchased five new releases this year, and only one of them was an actual 2024 title (Unicorn Overlord). The rest are re-releases of years-to-decades-old titles, so I don't really count them. The fifth title is not out yet (Fantasian), but I am expecting decent but ultimately lacking like most Mistwalker titles. Unicorn Overlord may win by default, but it was a blast to play, and the rare instance were I try to spread a game by word of mouth since it was that good.

>>3669154>>3669216How the fuck could I afford five new game releases in a year if I was a NEET? I work a full time job and average 2.5 hours a day of game time. I usually finish a game a month depending on its length.
>>3669253So then when do you find the time to masturbate multiple times a day and watch anime?
>>3668783>Emerald Beyondnever heard it. what game is i->girl wearing a hijab ah, that game. will never play that.
>>3669078Ys X was my rpg of the year too :)
>>3669302>never heard it. what game is i->>girl wearing a hijab>ah, that game.>will never play thatNow imagine the horror when the GOTY winner pulls off its win effortlessly while 1/6th of its main cast wears a hijab... and there was supposed to be "competition" too. What the actual fuck.If you can't get over the Hijab, the year becomes a write off, it's that grim. An entire year gone, and it was shilled as the year of the RPG too!
>>3668737Metaphor is really good but I haven't finished it. I enjoyed Dragon Quest Monsters: Dark Prince.>>3668783I forgot about Emerald Beyond I've had that demo on my computer for months now
Ones I played most of:>LAD: Infinite Wealth - got 50 hours in, to just past Dondoku Island, and dropped it as it dragged.>FFVII: Rebirth - 20 hours in, did all the content in Grasslands and Junon Region, did the Costa Del Sol MSQ, once I got into Corel (?) Region, I lost all hype.>SMTV: Vengeance - About 30 hours in, I liked it a lot, unfortunately I was let down that the second apocalypse region is ruined buildings with red sand, after the somewhat boring first region of ruined buildings with yellow sand.>P3: Reload - I don't think this needed a remake. Got 10 hours in, and found it unnecessary. P3 FES is sadly one of my favourite games, P3R I felt didn't build or change enough in the time I played to justify its existence.>DQIII - HD-2D Remake - I'm still early on in this, just got off the starting island. DQ games are weird for me because I find them hugely charming, but I can never "click" with the gameplay.>Metaphor ReFantazio - This was gearing up to be one of my all time favourites, but the dragon temple killed it. Combo between a twist that I felt was a bit masturbatory, and gameplay starting to grate on me. 40 hours before I dropped it.>Dragon Age The Veilguard - I am very early in this one, I think combat is acceptable, I hate the writing, visually it's got a slightly nice style. I don't like the characters, which is an issue in a character driven narrative.>Rise of the Ronin - Genuinely one of the worst games I've played.>Dragon's Dogma II - I appreciate what it was trying to do with lack of convenient fast travel, the dragon disease that nukes a city, general player unfriendly stuff. Some might like it. For me it was self indulgent.
>>3669862Adhd lmao
>>3668783I'm still so fucking angry about eiyuden
>>3668783What about singleplayer raid games that came out like Savage and TrinityS? Then we got the demo for next year's MMO of the year Erenshor.
which rpg had the cutest romanceable girls?
>>3669862I agree with this anon on SMT V and Metaphor, didn't play the rest in your list though, DQIII is GOTY for me tho, you have to get past the pyramid to start enjoying it, I know I know, the cliche "play it for 8 hours and then it starts getting enjoyable" bs, but it's genuinely true. Only downside is once you beat baramos the fun ends, the rest is just goal post moving / bait and switch, and the areas/bosses all feel underwhelming/reused, I still beat Zoma just to get credits to roll, but fuck no way am I touching that ass post game section, all just reused areas and mob sprites in the vein of "keeping it faithful to the original", the original rushed the post game because it was ages ago when people were underpaid and overworked, the remake didn't have to suffer from this as well just to keep 5 neckbeards happy.>>3669955same, I wish ECHH was actually good and not packed with systems to pad it out, the early game was fun, but it dropped off so fast.I literally have nothing to play rn, I'm thinking of starting another DQ3 run but with a wacky party and on the hardest difficulty and just finishing it at baramos this time.
should i buy baldurs gate 3 or final fantasy 7 rebirth?
>>3669862i thought the story of Yakuza 8 was awful. i was hyped for it because i loved Yakuza 7 but i couldn't get into the story of Yakuza 8. I stopped playing early on.
>>3670155Buy Baldur's Gate 3 bro, by the time you finish it you can enjoy your second run with 12 brand new advanced subclasses in the upcoming 2025 patch.
The RPG genre has been dead since New Vegas, the last tolerable (with patches and mods) mainstream release. And even as far as indie RPGs goes, there's just The Age of Decadence. Colony Ship was alright, but the story/dialogue writing was AI generated trash.
>>3671570New Vegas (and all Fallouts from 3 onwards) was ass, the gunplay is just awful.Plenty of great RPGs. Legend of Grimrock, Divinity: OS, Underrail, BG3. Wasteland 2 was okay, but I never bothered playing 3. Pathfinder games sucked, but Rogue Trader wasn't half bad.

>>3672668what the fuck is so good about this game, it just seems like an autobattler to me with mobile phone game assets
>>3672668Seconding the other guy, the game sucked. Piss easy even on max difficulty. Maybe there would be some worth to this game with a difficulty overhaul mod, but who wants to play a glorified autobattler? And the writing was awful.
>>3672668Sounds super gay
>>3672782It is
>>3672668I tried it out because the gameplay reminded me of Ogre Battle, but good lord that story was generic. Dragon Quest III HD was great. I'm still grinding through postgame stuff, but the meat and potatoes of the game was probably one of the best "JRPG" experiences I've had since the 90s. It's definitely a lot easier than the original, even on Draconian mode, but there are still some nice challenges. Overall I just love the structure of the game; the new map makes the world feel as big as it was always intended, and the updated graphics and arcitechture for each town and kindgom really start to give you the impression that you're travelling thousands of miles around a whole planet of diverse cultures that don't even necessarily know the others exist.I especially love that there's not really any story besides "Baramos is up to no good, better go stop him". That's not to say there's nothing else happening in the game, but there's something so wonderfully isolating about the fact that you never feel like you're following a structured narrative or series of scripted events; it's just you and your party against the world. The only thing driving you to see the next location is the simple act of seeing the next location. Maybe some NPC might drop a hint about something interesting to investigate here or there, but once you get the ship, you're largely just exploring the world as you see fit. It's really liberating and it starts to make things way more personal than any super plot-heavy RPG with hyperrealistic cutscenes ever could; it's insane that one of the best "open world" games I've ever played is just an NES JRPG with a fresh coat of paint. I especially love how you just uncover little tidbits about your dad in various towns as you travel. Sometimes you get a flashback to give you more context, but other times it's literally just a couple of text boxes about a man who visited town many years ago and regretted leaving his family behind.
>>3668737Eve of calamity on steam. Yes I admit that I found about It with an YouTube video essay but I dont regret trying It out. It has a Nice old school feel to It and is a pretty easygoing game If you work a Lot like I do.For me its the best of 2024, though I also have to admit that I havent played any other RPGs released this year, nothing really caught my attention
>>3668749I hope you're mad that this thread is still alive
>>3674382It's all because of you
>>3670162Full all skip it the story only gets worse as you play. It is honestly impressive, every time I thought it had bottumed out it found a new way to suck. It's not even Yakuza fun bad writing (e.g. Secret Koreans) it's just bad writing.
>>3673833I agree with this anon, DQ3 is GOTY, but it won't win any awards because it didn't please the old players who wanted cock and ball torture difficulty and it filters newer players because of the encounter rate (new players don't know about holy water), there's so much about this game that is perfect and it's almost a shame most won't get to experience the beauty of the journey in this game. Not to mention the game has its flaws as well, everything after baramos is just combat centric and lacking in terms of beauty that the early game has.I wish I could play it again, I tried to start two new play throughs but after finishing it once and beating xenlon the motivation to replay is low, other than to minmax which isn't as enjoyable desu
>>3674663Are Dungeons dumbed down in this version? Or are they 1:1 with the original when It comes to layout?
>>36746691:1 afaik, even the post end game content shares the same lazy design
Louis from metaphor reminded me of Jeraldy from Marikin Online 4, in the way they fight.
>>3673833>>3674630I don't know how to say this without coming off as mean. You guys deserve better than what Square Enix gave you.
>>3674693definitely, dq3 should've been better especially for the box price of 60$ (fuck that though, just pirate it and use the new ryujinx fork) but it's a fine slate for modders to improve on, saves and mods are all cross platform.
Shadow of the Erdtree.
>>3674705>Could have been full 3D>Character customization including height, titty, and butt sliders>Either no loading screens or minimal loading, like only loading when entering/exiting town or activating a battleWhat makes it funnier is that Romancing Saga 2's remake looks like it had way more effort put into it.
>>3674710I think they bit off more than they could chew. The early screenshots looked great but the final game was very ugly and cheap looking.
>>3674706bleh
Now that I think about it, Person 3 Reload is the only "roleplaying game" from 2024 that I played this year. Terrible year for RPGs.
Probably a tie between SMTVV and SaGa Emerald Beyond for me. I like Elin more than both of them actually, but it's still in EA so I won't count it. Even those 2 are pretty flawed honestly (VV only having 1 completely new area kind of sucked and the story changes were barely better than the original, and EB is a literal phone game despite the combat system being one of the best I've ever seen) but almost everything else I played was more disappointing in some way>LaD Infinite WealthCombat was better than 7 but still not amazing and the story killed any interest I had in Ichiban's story>Persona 3 ReloadEnjoyed it despite the soundtrack and some cutscenes being worse, I have a soft spot for it though since I played FES as a teenager. >Unicorn OverlordCombat system was actually interesting and I liked how you program the units' behavior instead of directly controlling them, however it ended up being way too easy and the story was too bland for me to continue, ended up dropping near the end of the desert area.>Dragon's Dogma 2Started off fun but encountering the same enemies over and over got old, dropped around the island area. >SkaldFun up until after you take back control of the city then it gets kind of shitty. The ending being railroaded is retarded.>MetaphorPlayed around 30 hours but don't feel like continuing, it peaked at the dungeon with the minotaur in the demo for me. Combat is kind of interesting with the class synergies but it got too easy after finishing the 1st dungeon. And the calendar system feels pretty pointless compared to Persona 3.I would've played DQ3HD since I loved playing the SNES version years ago but it looked way too low-effort to justify spending $60 on.

>Astlibra DLCI'm reminding you to play Astlibra. The DLC is okay, a fun way to remix the combat even if the story is unfortunately lacking.>GBF RelinkThe story lasted a couple hours too long, but I liked the gameplay so much. I hope the sequel is a very straightforward MH clone like this was, maybe skipping the story entirely.>Touhou ArcadiaThis was great, a well done homage to the old smt games. I would probably play it again.>EiyudenWhat a massive disappointment this was. All that hype for fucking nothing. None of my characters did any fucking damage, and it felt like recruiting was more fun than the actual game.>Secret of VaronisI still don't know if I liked this one. It's like a saga fan game that is so faithful it might as well have been on the gameboy. I recommend if you're a huge fan of the gameboy saga game, but it comes with the caveat that it is so faithful, it feels more like a fan game.>SMT VengeanceThis fucks
Colon Ship kinda counts doesn't it? It released in December last year but got huge updates this year. It's just Age of Decadence with an AI generated story/dialogue but it still beats all your faves
>>3675086>>3675879Sounds like Touhou won
After falling prey to atlus jewery and paying the $20 it was on sale for, I'd nominate vengeance as being my favourite.i grinded the fuck out of it and it's clearly what the unfinished vanilla smt V should've been but god damn, it was so fine.
>>3676874Really enjoyed it as well. Vengeance also gave all the human characters a much needed characterization boost outside of Dazai, which was the only one that really had an arc in the original. Even Nahobino shows more of a personality.Only real complaint I have is that I wish the party building had more depth, like being able to use equipment.
Balatro is a rougelike, and therefore an RPG
Let's see here.>FF7R2Good, but too similar to the original story. Exact opposite of the promise at the end of 7R1.>P3RGood, but it's still the same comparatively simple P3 gameplay that hasn't aged well compared to P4 and 5.>SMT5:VGreat. No complaints. Bigger and better than the original with lots of great additions.>Trails through DaybreakTerrible. Legitimately as bad as the Cold Steel games. It started out non-shit, but by chapter 4, I wanted to kill myself. Worst writing imaginable, most mindless combat imaginable. Watered down for coomer retards incapable of thinking.>MetaphorGood, but worse than SMT5 and even P5. The Archetype system is inferior to demons/personas and it has INSANE amounts of asset reuse for enemies, compared to the 300+ completely different demons and bosses in SMT5 and P5.>Ys XAwful. Looks like a PS2 game, plays like a bad PS2 game. The sea combat is like a fucking Indian phone game knockoff of Black Flag, and the combat is unresponsive and unrewarding. Enemies don't even react to your attacks. The AI is also completely braindead. You can walk in a circle around bosses and they won't be able to hit you with anything other than the hard counters to shit AI, which is periodic AoE attacks. The state of Falcom in 2024 is truly sad. And that's what I've played.
>>3679123Oh, and>Unicorn OverlordTerrible writing, terrible combat. Its sole appeal is coomer shit for coomers. The combat consists of holding down R2 to speed up the game as your soldier ants bump into each other.
>>3676668>Colon ShipAlways makes me laugh
>>3668737I can't remember if Moonring was released this year or last year, but if it was this year Moonring is up there for me. I picked up Path of the Abyss on an anon's recommendation and it's a really fun dungeon crawler, but it's EA with a low quality (but workable) english translation. The Geneforge 2 remake is out but I actually never finished Mutagen so I didn't grab it. >>3668749>OP makes thread to discuss Video Game RPGs on /vrpg/ - Video Games/RPG>Even gives his own suggestions to start the thread off>Start seething over nothing>Continue to reply to the thread to seetheFuck off, OP has contributed far more than you ever have to the board with just one post.

it's a four way tie, because they're all good for different reasonsff6 has the best plot out of any work of LITERATURE (and this is coming from someone who has a worthless english degree and read greek, roman, russian, and italian novels and plays translated into english) ever made because everyone argues about whatff7 out of all the magic and stat gain systems is the best and i just think sephiroth is one of the coolest villains every because he's so fucking insane that he realizes he needs to destroy the world to save the world, and when you replay ff7 a second time, suddenly all of sephiroth's actions make senseoblivion with the +5/+5/+5 mod and some nice titties for my character one of the most fun games i ever played, because what i did was just keep coming up with new ways to become totally invincible and one shot everything on max difficulty. it finally happened that i caught a guard murder a beggar for stealing food and that was one of the ultimate moments of rpg me for me where i did it for the first time in the game, i decided fuck the main quest, i'm not saving the world at all anymore, i'm just going to murder all the guards forever and clear all 60 (or whatever the number was) oblivion gates until i've scouted every possible location they can spawn, and i'm pissed off i didn't get a hidden achievement for that, then this savefile is over. i also decided fast travel was stupid and banned myself from using it
the OG skyrimeme, if you put a gun to my head, i'd go with that one, or i might blurt out of ff6, because i spent like 1000 hours on it, and between asis 4x enemy mult, unlimited followers with like 30 hot female followers of varying degrees of op and my lesbian lover, celestine, who was programmed to be an illusion/restoration/conjuraton mage that had a staff of light that used the damage health effect, and i gave her dawnbreaker so she looked cooler. then needs mods, superboss fight packs, 4x/4x damage, alchemy/perk overhauls, both vanilla armor, realistic armor, and sexy skimpy armor, of which i was the sexy ones, and lydia was the realistic ones, and my pet cat, khajro, was the vanilla armor one, but i gave him a circlet instead of a helmet. the custom followers depended on whatever i figured their personality was based on the mod description, and my unlimited followers mod was the ultimate awesome of skyrimeme, because battles were like helms deep, 24v100+, and i have to very paranoidly save every 5 seconds in combat to make sure my followers aren't dying and if after like 8 deaths my idea isn't working, try attacking something else. sometimes, no, you were low and about to get hit by a crossbow and because i had mods that made the enemies way harder to sneak without muffle and invisiblity, and better aim, and i turned the gravity up, so pushback effects were fucking lethal, you could only fall about one story without taking lethal fall damage, and other mods that never got remade when the game got remade, such as making it walk backwards really slow and less slow sideways, so you can't just kite everything easily, and because i have so many followers that need fully enchanted grand soul gem equipment, i'm always starved for cash. sadly, every time skyrim gets remade, a lot of mods don't get remade, so it gets less fun to play, and i think i'm done with it for life. i played on an 8 hour timescale so a day of skyrimeme was basically like a full day irl

I can't decide between Granblue Relink, Wuthering Waves and Wizardry Variants Daphne.Relink and Wuwa I guess are almost the same game with different flavours.Wizardry is the standout, because it's trying to do some novel things with the genre's tropes.Granblue and Wuwa have the same story problems and standout combat systems of the year.

The Romancing SaGa 2 remake.
None, they all suck. Valbrace in UFO 50 is the closest to a good RPG this year produced, and it is also flawed.
Has to be Drova. Why is it so hard for devs to reproduce the Gothic style of exploration? It just hits differently.
