What's a paladin?
wow another /vrpg/ gem of a thread, great job OP
>>3671585You're too young to get the joke, zoomie.
>>3671583>Your knowledge of the land shall be great
Seriously, what were they thinking making Blackthorn a villain again after his redemption in VII? You can't even blame EA because the original script by Richard Garriott had him as the villain too.
>>3671587No, I get it.
A cross between Knight and Cleric, Paladins perform both roles well, but not as well as the more focused classes they borrow from. Like Knights, Paladins can learn to use any type of weapon or armor, although they don’t have as many choices to begin with. Paladins also begin with the Spirit realm of magic, and can also learn to use the Clerical Mind and Body realms. They cannot, however, learn to use the greater realms of Light and Dark, nor any of the Elemental realms. Paladins that are true to their cause may be promoted to Crusader (gaining one hit point and spell point per level) and ultimately to Hero (gaining another hit point and spell point per level). Paladins may learn all of the secondary skills.

>>3672122Paladout
>>3671583you know how a ranger is a shitty cross between a fighter and a druid? well a paladin is a less shitty cross between a fighter and a cleric and can be pretty good in the right scenario
>>3671583They were sometimes known as the Twelve Peers. Historically, they were the foremost members of Charlemagne's court, although many of their most famous exploits are largely fictitious, representing Christian martial superiority over the Saracen hordes.
>>3671596Blackthorn was the leader of the faction opposing Lord British in UO, so naturally in Garriott's mind that meant he was a villain
>>3671583A caste of warrior-rulers serving as guards of the royal palace, protectors and judges of the realm, and counselors to the King. Paladins travel to different parts of the kingdom every two years to bring justice and ensure the safety of the people as representatives of the crown. This journey allows them to stay grounded in the land they rule and grow wiser. Once their duty is complete, they return to the palace and report their observations and actions to the court. To become a paladin, one must first learn and prove himself as the squire of a senior paladin for two years, accompanying him on his travels. Noble sons, having benefited from proper religious and secular education as well as martial training, are more likely to be chosen as squires. However, if a commoner catches the eye of a paladin and earns his blessing at the end of the journey, he may be elevated to the same status as his peers.
>>3671596He has "Black" in his name, anon. Can't fix that.
>>3671596Gotta remember Adams came up with U4-5-6, can't expect Garriott to know what was in them
Has the time come for us to forgive Ultima IX?
>>3671583A miserable pile of secrets!
>>3671583I swear if this game came out today and you were to complain about the Avatar not knowing what the virtues are, someone would find a way to call you a racist bigot.
>>3674322Someone would call the virtues themselves racist and bigoted.
>>3671583A murderous priest/cleric.
>>3671583A Knight in Charlemagne's court.
>>3671583Historical: I believe they were the name given to the household knights of the Carolingian (Frankish) kings. The name is derived I think from the 'Palatine (i.e. of the palace) Guard' that accompanied Roman emperors on campaign.
>>3674323I think troons would struggle with the virtue of Honesty in particular. Although they might understand Sacrifice, post-op.
>>3671583Would it have gone down better if they didn't call it Ultima 9 and instead did it the way reboots go nowadays where it'd be just "Ultima" (1999)?Also, for all the shit the game gets, I'd argue it's still better than morrowind.
>>3671583According to modern rpg devs - sassy black woman.
>>3674701>Although they might understand Sacrifice, post-op.Speculation. There's no conclusive evidence that transitioning affects suicide rates, for better or worse.
>>3674846A big part of their marketing is that it was the conclusion to both the arc started with 7 and the Avatar's story in general. Named their special edition after the fan community and all that. I think a reboot would have lost all that hype and ruined all goodwill with their community after all the promises made post-U8

>>3679133I thought that sort of humor was funny when I was a kid but not really as an adult. Now that I'm older I can understand why all of Spoony's friends left him after the "BETRAYAL" episode.Irregardless Spoony is actually crying in the video OP is referencing. Real tears crying. I can't empathize with that given the situation.
>>3679441he has always been emotionally volatile, it's wonder he didn't troon out and/or kill himself
>>3671601>i'm so heckin ABOVE internet culture, i'm too intelligent for such droll conversatery
I think that it's a missed opportunity that nobody is ever doing a historical Paladin. 7th to 8th century. Chainmail over a naked body, overcoat, longsword, great helm, shield and a lance. They're always in renaissance plate armour in games, and they often give them shields, even thought shields were simply outdated by plate.
>>3679589>Chainmail over a naked bodyOuch.
>>3679116I mean, no, but that's because that's not the part where he does. That bit gets the funny betrayal jingle, it's just a setup for the part that does make him cry much later. The joke/problem steup there is that the Avatar doesn't know what a paladin is. Ok, that's, like, the third coming of Jesus not knowing what a christian is in a context where he used to. Kinda weak writing, clearly made as the easiest compromise for new players, when there would've been a billion ways to inform the player in a way that makes the avatar not feel like a big white doofus. Also yeah, it implies he forgot about his best bud's death, which in the Avatar's subjective timeline happened weeks before at most. But actually, not just his death, his sacrifice.Like, Dupre killed himself in what is presented as a non-resurrectable way because he himself wants to save his best bud of several centuries, the Avatar, who was slated for that sacrifice. He wants to do it because of the sins he committed earlier when he was literally possessed by a snake demon, because even though it was not really him, he feels accountable, bound by honor, which is the virtue of the paladins. So by doing it, he becomes the incarnation of honor, which he has strived for all his life. But also, Sacrifice is another virtue, among other things based on the principle of love, which is markedly the principle paladins don't follow, and it makes sense since he does it to save his best bud. By fulfilling all three principles he thematically finally becomes the Avatar's equal in death. This is echoed in the fact that by sacrificing himself unconditionally, he literally is reborn a snake god instead of a snake demon, embodying the local Ophidian principles which are the Britannian principles under another name.(continued)
>>3671601read this the other day, noticing this reddit behavior everywhere nowpretty bleak situation
>>3679627While it's kinda skimmed over, it's a big deal because the thesis of the fake religion created by the big bad and part of his creed had been that no ordinary human can reach Avatarhood save for the Avatar himself, that it is an impossible ideal. That Dupre realizes all principles by his sacrifice and becomes a literal in-game god for all eternity, saving the universe from destruction, shows that it is in fact possible, that even a corrupter sinner can not only redeem himself but fulfill the Avatar's ideal. As mentioned earlier it also ties the ophidian (and U6 gargoyles') principles and virtues into the britannian virtues. Until then, the virtues and principles had been some arbitrary framework made up by Lord British and the Gargoyles, only validated by the local holy book, while in U7-2 it really establishes that there's not only a 1-1 match between the Britannian and Ophidian/Gargoyle principles, they actually are part of a natural and divine principle of the universe, that balancing the virtues is healing the world, as Dupre prevents the end of the world by reaching godhood in an union of at least three in-game religious. While it sounds like unimportantly detailed hogwash to someone who hasn't played the games, it shows, at the very least, that U7-2's writers did their homework. They looked at previous games and built a new virtue framework that'd unite them and be a logical evolution. It shows in other respects, too, like famously taking place on a lost U1 continent. It's all extra relevant because at that point it was already known that U7 to U9 (ironically four games) were one big arc concluding the avatar's saga. They end on cliffhangers, temporary victories over the guardian at the price of increasing sacrifices: the Avatar's link to earth, his best bud, leading a whole world to ruin and, more and more strongly implied, the Avatar's death at the end of U9, who would follow and further the example of Dupre's sacrifice to go beyond avatarhood.
>>3679627>>3679635And then comes U9. Let us review the Avatar's sacrifices:>link to earthHe starts on it so it can be a tutorial/intro to the lore>leading a whole world to ruinNot even gonna get mentioned. There were a couple scenes that were gonna address it but they got recycled for something else (since they were already rendered years prior)>his best bud*That* is the bit that makes Spoony cry.Because it's not just that the Avatar forgot what a paladin is for player convenience, it's that the U9 writers never knew or gave a shit. So Dupre's resurrection is a quest reward, because surely, rewarding the player with bringing back a party member is more significant than following up thematically on what he meant at that point. It's a wider U9 thing. Blackthorne is a cackling evil villain. Because he was the villain in U5, right? That's continuity, right? Never mind that he was the misled villain out of good intentions, then exiled, then redeemed. He was the villain a decade ago, right? So by the same rule, Dupre was the mustache knight party member, right? Hasn't done much of note since then. You redo the U4 thing again to save the world, instead of going beyond. That is the *real* bit that makes Spoony cry. That U9, the conclusion of the trilogy of trilogies, heir to games that at least tried to present moral questions. was largely made by people who never knew Ultima, sure, but people who couldn't give a shit. Who couldn't be bothered to, even though they had infinite money thanks to UO at that point, *because* they had infinite money and didn't care anymore. Despite a special edition named after its fan community, a game shat out by obligation. Not just killed by big bad EA and an early instance of GAAS ruining a dev, but definitely rooting the U8 suspicion, that for a series thematically linked to personal integrity maybe its creator had never cared at all, that all the good things had been happy accidents by better but temporary designers.
