Has this ever happened to you with an RPG?
no
>>3677086filtered is a newfag buzzword. the comic should be two young people.
>>3677086>anons when they are convinced to play those shitty Darklands games rather than an actually good game like PoR
>>3677088they're roughly the same age the skinny guy just takes better care of himself
>>3677086System Shock 2 was fucking shit. The game is insultingly linear and constantly holds your hand with maybe the only exception being that short second where you hunt eggs on the second ship, but by that point you just want the game to fucking end already even though the worst is still yet to come.
>>3677090he's specifically drawn to look older and using language like "zoom-zooms" and "nowadays" which implies an age difference.
>>3677086Trying something ONLY because someone recommended is foolish. You gotta be personally interested.Doesn't help that some will then see the game through the lense of a contrarian>you think it's good? well guess what
>>3677086Holy shit, you are still posting your assblasted cope comic. Why don't you show us the original poster that obliterated your anus?
>>3677086Fear & Hungary threads in a nutshell.
>>3677086>zoomie >filtered by old game>copes with "NOOOOOOOOOOO IT BAD GAME!!!!!"Lmao. Every single time.
>>3677096>https://arch.b4k.co/_/search/image/6RV1BK1hXISs6PDyWNiptQ/There were four instances of that comic posted on /v/ before his first /vrpg/ thread.
>>3677086Earthbound, I just could not enjoy it. Even if I consider the time it came out it feels dated. Also Wizardry 4, I do enjoy hard dungeon crawlers but W4 is just a horrorshow. It's actually a huge shame because when you ignore the cock-and-ball torture difficulty is is a genuinely amazing and innovative game.
>>3677086this is basically the morrowind experience
>>3677635I had several failed attempts at getting into Earthbound but once I got far enough for Poo to show up I was hooked till the end. The floating health bars start to finally become a real mechanic at that point, the challenge ramps up in a way that requires proper resource management, and the setting goes from zany to just complete insanity.
>>3677124Maybe the old thing shouldn't be unplayable dogshit?
>>3678270>play modern game>forced to interact with hours of tutorials>play old game>forced to read a manual for anywhere between half an hour and an afternoonEither way you're meeting the game halfway to enjoy it, so I don't know what the issue is.
>>3678270>unplayableMust be why so many people played em, right?
>>3677086Persona 2 is the worst SMT game ever made
>>3678604But the story is good tho
>>3678376Dark Souls did it right
>>3677086Enjoy
>>3678621>>3677898Yeah, EB is a slow burn at the start, once you get the 4th party member, it becomes a lot more manageable.
>>3677086No. I have never had a oldhead recommend me a bad game, and this story likely only exists in your imagination. >>3677095I've yet to meet a contrarian, I keep hearing people be accused of being one. >>3677103Is thinking the game is goss being filtered?
>>3677092You thought System Shock 2 was holding your hand? Compared to Spider bot sure, but compared to almost any game made in the past ten years...
>>3677086It's happened with me and every single Saturn game.
Imagine caring so much about someone liking other things that you're so mad that you make a shitty comic about it.Sure, we've all been recommended things (not just games) we didn't like. Wild.
>>3677086You already tried making this thread a month ago with the same exact wording and picture. What the hell is wrong with this awful board?
>>3677086every turn-based rpg>n-no dude you're supposed to read an entire book before you play!>you don't get it managing 10 characters at once is part of the fun!>it only takes 200 hours because there's so much lore!
>>3677086Not with any RPG. I did stop playing Fallout 1, but I was genuinely filtered by it, so me calling the game bad would be cope. However I did have experiences like in that comic with the following:>Thief GoldBoomers hype this shit up as the ultimate stealth game, but it's way too easy and just not very interesting. I had fun for the first hour or so, but later it got boring. Light and sound-based detection also allow you to sneak by guards too easily. The level design is great though.>Half Life 2Glorified tech demo. Way too linear, but I understand why people were amazed by it when it releaed. The physics simulation still holds up.>STALKER: SoCBoring exploration, copy-pasted side quests, and the game is made too easy by powerful artefacts, armor, and weapons. The atmosphere and gunplay carried it hard.>>3677092I went in expecting Bioshock but not dumbed-down instead of an immersive sim like Deus Ex, so I had a great time with it. 2017's Prey blows it out of the water, though.
>>3677086No, but trying to replay games I remember enjoying as a child sometimes gets me wonder how I could have liked it.
>>3677086happened to me with vantage master (it's not even an rpg)
>>3678607lmao
>>3678376>read manual for half hour+when? I remember reading manual days and you basically just used them to pre-learn the buttons etc. It took no more than 5 minutes at the longest. Even that was mostly just seeing what all the collectables etc looked like.
>>3679286Depends what you were playing. Wouldn’t, uh, fly with Falcon 3.0. Or old RPGs with tables and statistics in the back. While later in the manual era some were glorified quick start guide pamphlets with keybinds and little else.
>>3679286I played Wizardry 6 the other day and you need to read through the manual to understand different attacks, the classes and races (since their effects aren't described in game), spellcasting, combat as a whole, and skills.
>>3678680I've never played a single turn-based JRPG that fits that description. But why are you so triggered by having to read? Maybe Fortnite would be more your speed.
>>3677086>Has this ever happened to you with an RPG?Not with old RPGs, but new ones. Friends will recommend something to me, and it will be nothing but cutscenes and waypoints. Where's the game?
>>3679286>I remember reading manual daysyou obviously dont, because every single famicom RPG requires reading the manual to know what the spells do. Every one.
>>3679286Like the other anons said, also manuals would usually contain a quick start guide to the world and not just the game mechanics. By introducing the setting in the manual game devs were able to answer questions the player might have about the world without tutorializing.
>>3679421every time with this same retarded argumentif I want to read a book I'll read a bookwhen I'm launching a video game it's because I want to play a video game, not to realize the fucking thing came with it's own required reading
Only with Gothic. "HURRUDRR HULLO HERO, YOU HAVE LE MAGIC-THROWER PEOPLE, WARRIOR PEOPLE, AND THIEF PEOPLE. KILL THESE 10 WOLVES FOR 5 GOLD! KILL THIS MONSTER TO PROGRESS TO LE NEXT CITY DISTRICT! FETCH ME 10 BERRIES! OH NO, WE MUST DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE BIG BAD! *run back and click for every combat encounter*"Most generic piece of eurojank I've ever seen in my life with the most linear, boring mission progression, dialogue and gameplay imaginable. I honestly can't even understand how it's possible, it's like they took the most mundane, tedious level 1 prologue quest from either Baldur's Gate or Morrowind or even Neverwinter and replicated it to fill up an entire game.I guess this is a German company's idea of fun.
Ultima 4. I’ve tried so fucking hard to enjoy that game multiple times, across multiple different versions. There’s stuff I like, the introduction is great and I like how the personality test determines class and starting location. I like how open world the game is.But 99% of the game is talking to npcs to find out what other npcs to talk to, literally waiting in place for the right moongate, or waiting to meditate at a shrine you have enough virtue for. It’s meant to meditative but it’s just fucking exhausting and I feel like my hours are wasting away trying to play it. It’s barely even a game, and I get that’s kind of ‘the point’ but I swear half the people who praise it for that will turn around and hate on any modern game for not being ‘a game’ in the same breath.I fucking wish I liked this game. But fuck this game.
>>3677086Yes, pretty much every game hyped for its writing instead of the gameplay is like this.
>filteredSometimes it's true though, but it's not just the player's fault. Sometimes a game is good but some relics of the time make it hard to enjoy for people who aren't used to it. Sometimes it happens with new games too, it's a good game beneath the surface but there are shitty barriers to enjoyment that shouldn't be there.
>>3677635I had the same problem with Chrono Trigger as well... But maybe I was just being unfair. But I don't care
>>3677095>Trying something ONLY because someone recommended is foolish. You gotta be personally interested. That's a good point anon. And sometimes even if you are interested, having something hyped to shit means you're just going to be disappointed by super high expectations. You don't have the enjoyment of just discovering it yourself.
>>3678680>>n-no dude you're supposed to read an entire book before you play!>>you don't get it managing 10 characters at once is part of the fun!>>it only takes 200 hours because there's so much lore! This doesn't sound like any turn based game, I've ever played, and I want to know what game you have in mind because maybe it's awesome
>>3678680>turn-based>managing 10 characters at onceAre you thinking of X-Com? It's not an RPG, and it certainly doesn't have any lore. The next closest thing I can think of is Helherron, an obscure indie game with a party cap of 8.
>>3677086This is the greatest meme of this month.I'm stealing this because its so relevant.
>>3680914>You don't have the enjoyment of just discovering it yourself.Yeah that's like +2 to enjoyment rolls. Otherwise you're just intentionally gimping yourself and having a worse time as a result.
>>3681065>picrelWhat is that? Wasn’t what my box looked like. Looks like a modern style recreation
>>3681116I don't know where it's from but I assume it's a modern mockup.
>>3680912How can you dislike Chrono Trigger? Game is 30 hours long including side quests and it's one of the neatest RPGs ever. There's a reason millennials onions over it, and I wish I hadn't waited till I was 28 to play it.
>>3681155I don't know, consider me being filtered. That's fair, but I just don't like it. maybe it's the artstyle is... quite old... Didn't make me care long enough about whats the good behind it for me
>>3681167>maybe it's the artstyle is... quite old...That's Akira Toriyama, man. What the fuck. Even if you don't like Dragon Ball you gotta like his mecha and fantasy work, both of which are on full display in Chrono Trigger.
>>3681169>Even if you don't like Dragon Ball you gotta like his mecha and fantasy workNta but how exactly is someone who doesn't like dragonball supposed to appreciate the rest of his work? It's the same shit across genres and mediums.Don't even bother pretending pic related wouldn't fit in DB's setting like a glove.
>>3681199Usually people don't like Dragon Ball Z because of the atrocious pacing, not because the world itself. As for Chrono I could see him existing in the world of Dragon Ball but not in the same space as the other Dragon Ball characters.
>>3681254>the atrocious pacingIt's been a while since I read the manga, but I don't remember the pacing being bad.I assume you're talking about the Z anime milking the shit out of every fight, which is more a production issue than pacing since it was being made almost concurrently to chapter releases.
>>3681155its a shallow game that has been circlejerked for thousands of years as the goat rpg
Baldur's Gate 1. Anyone who says there's even a semblance or tactics or thought put into the combat needs to be taken out back and shot, the game is legitimatley 90% trash fights.
>>3681269heh, filtered
Ultima 7I've tried it several times and every cell in my body starts chanting "stop playing this" in unison until I do.
>>3679401I hulk smashed through Wiz 6 with a normal party without ever changing classes or knowing a lot of mechanics and it wasn't terrible but it didn't do anything to make me want to play the rest of the series. Some of the lategame fights were also just way too long because they balanced for your party to do a lot more damage than mine was doing. The people that really really liked it are just min/max autismos.
>>3677092How was it holding your hand retard?
>>3677086No.Git gud, newfag
>>3681269I'm playing it right now and really enjoying it, but you are right. I have about the most non synergetic party imaginable and a spellcaster who basically just uses the slingshot and rarely casts besides the boss fight situations and I'm still steamrolling it on normal difficulty
>>3686000>play game on easy>game is easyWaste of digits.
>like dungeon crawlers>install might and magic>no turning animations>turn game offSkill issue, I know
>>3686000>I have about the most non synergetic party imaginableWdym characters with ranged weapons are very synergetic. They can attack from afar while their companions also
>>3686026But to be serious, notice how during character creation you roll stats, and sometimes those numbers roll under 18, maybe even under 10?That's because you're supposed to be OK playing suboptimally. Now, if you play most optimally, best classes, max numbers, party, equipment, broken mechanics whatever, the game obviously shifts on the easier side.
>>3677086I haven't played old crpgs but I paid full price for BG3 after universal praise and yeah, didn't like it at all. Never buying a $60 rpg ever again.
>>3686044Every game released in the last four years that I played right at release was a disappointment, and I would’ve had a better impression of the game if I had waited 1-2 years for all the patches to come out. BG3 at release was very mediocre and it’s still not great now after its “done”
>>3686052True. Same experience with elden ring, dragons dogma 2, wotr where act 4 was frying my pc. Im now debating whether to get rogue trader now or wait for the enhanced edition.
>>3686058>Im now debating whether to get rogue trader now or wait for the enhanced edition.Wait.
>>3677086The Elder Scrolls: Arena. Game has no fan base, though, because TES boomers all play Daggerfall.
>>3677086>fallout 1 had so much better writing and choices than that casual slop n*w vegas>macgyver in junktown tells me to do a quest>say no>entire town hostile
>>3678607*The characters The story is a mess
