Even excluding PWs, Swordflight and Prophet are one of the most enjoyable RPG experiences I've had.>Planescape: TormentUnparalleled in atmosphere, writing and story. Nothing really comes close, perhaps MoTB and the aforementioned Prophet module have comparably good stories.>ArcanumDoes all the things that Fallout does, just better - excluding the appallingly shit combat.
Baldur's Gate 3The Witcher 3Mass Effect 2
Baldur's Gate 2Fallout 2Fallout: New VegasI consider bg1 and f1 as basically the same game as their sequels, or as a package deal with their sequels(cue contrarian seethe)The third one would be the hardest to pick as apart from the aforementioned titans of the genre I guess I got the most out of somewhat niche titles: dragonfall, storm of zehir etc.cyberpunk2077 and fnv are up there as well, but I spent more time with fnv so we'll go with that
>>3684727>I consider bg1 and f1 as basically the same game as their sequelsToday the sequels would be nothing but DLCs, but back then people were happy with any slop thrown their way
>>3684754>Today the sequels would be nothing but DLCs, but back then people were happy with any slop thrown their wayThis is severely anachronistic. Back then games got legit expansion packs which almost no developer does nowadays. DLC by comparison is paltry and nickel and diming bullshit.
>>3684754It's pretty much the total opposite:today the brand-worshipping consoomers are happy with any microtransaction or overpriced dlc with minimal content farted in their general directionThe term dlc was invented precisely because they could obviously never be called sequels, but they were too small to even be called the standard minor addition of the day: expansions (like totsc)bg2 is so much bigger than bg1 in any measurable way that it's downright absurd
>>3684763you're charged 5-20 ameuromanian pound-buckaroos for a fucking race/class these days (solasta, tw:wh3 etc.)fucking todd and his gay little horse armor
>>3684763BG2 also made numerous changes to the gameplay that most players these days will never notice, because almost everyone experiencing this game for the first time now plays BG1 on BG2's engine.
>>3684727fallout 2 always felt like where the series started going downhill with the wacky humour and references
>>36804671) Pillars I2) Dragon Age Origins3) TyrannyHonorable mentions to Disco Elysium, Witcher 2 and Torment Numenera. TTRPG systems need not apply unless carried hard by story (PS:T) or level design (BG1 and BG3, but BG2 can fuck off).
>>3684784>going downhillF:NV, which is the best 3d fallout, is the true (and only) spiritual successor to f1&2. I guess hiding the most memey stuff behind wild wasteland was a good way of handling it.But as an ESL kid a lot of the cultural meme references kinda flew right past me so I guess that in a way saved me from being bothered by most of the references. On the other hand weird offbeat bizzarro-world references are the essence of fallout, starting from the intro of fallout 1. I guess the main thing for f2 I that the zeitgeist has shifted and the stuff hasn't aged well. But apart from the hubologists I don't think they majorly included the worst offenses in plot-critical parts.

>>3682337>>3682342>>3684727>>3686216>Baldurs Gate 2I'm vonvinced anyone who claims BG1&2 are their "favorite rpgs of all time" is either a nostalgia-blind fool or a contrarian. The story is mediocre, the artstyle is garbage, the characters are bland(goes double for BG1 where characters have almost NO dialog), and there's no real unique/situational things to say based on your class/race. It is a mediocre game that aged worse than any other RPG I've played. For contrast, Fallout 1 and 2 aged wonderfully, and the combat is actually enjoable and meaningful.Real Time with Cringe is objectively a braindead easy combat mode, completely unfun, and filled with meaningless trashmob encounters. It was a failed attempt at creating the infinitely superior Turn BASED combat, but Bioware was too moronic and unskilled to do it.

As much as I enjoy combat, systems and mechanics, which were indeed done better in ToEE(though I think NwN has done an excellent job in some of those aspects as well), you can't have the same authentic PnP experience elsewhere. You could play as a member of the Planescape dustmen in one server, as a werecrocodile on another, a power-hungry medieval mafia boss, a Red Wizard, captain of the city guard and many more wilder character concepts, which would be impossible to pull off without the DM mode and the ease of using the other tools presented to you, existing in the form they do in NwN.

>KotOR 1My first "real" RPG. I played it upon release as a kid. I remember thinking it was going to be live action similar to "Obi-wan" from Xbox in 2002 but I was completely wrong. I fell in love with the story & the combat system is based on DND so it was a good primer for learning more complex RPG systems. Putting this on here simply because it got me into RPGs and I find it as a great starter RPG.>NWN (2002)The ultimate DND 3E sandbox. There's something about this game that always keeps me coming back. It is truly unique among RPGs for it's modding scene & private worlds. In the pre-WoW 2000's this was THE game for online roleplaying and not much else matches it in terms of custom content. The hundreds of great user modules will always make me come back to this one and it's doubtful any big game dev will ever make anything like it again simply because they can't profit off of shitty DLC.>Gothic 2This is a great example of a game where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts: the combat is simple, the stat systems are linear (spam strength & 1H swords), magic is imbalanced, summons are broken, AI can be glitchy, the item progression is boring and leaves no room for experimentation. But for some reason when it's all tied together it makes for a wonderful, memorable, and fun experience. Exploring the world felt exciting & challenging. The story kept me hooked and learning the fighting patterns was addicting. At times, the game feels a little rough around the edges but at the end of the day, you can tell the devs actually cared & loved the game they were making.
>>3687471I love Fabled Lands too. I had the first two books as a kid - in America they were called Quest - and they played a huge role on what I enjoy about roleplaying games.I guess my three favorite RPGs would be...Realms of Arkania: Star TrailSaGa: Scarlet Grace - AmbitionsKing of Dragon PassBut I love too many. It feels weird to exclude so many of the games I love.
