If the game is written such that making a generic blank slate character makes narrative sense, then just let people do that without playing games like "okay, you can technically make a custom character, but they basically suck and you're missing out and there's no reason to do it" because such attempts at coercion just convey contempt for your audience. I much prefer full custom party creation over modern developers' shitty companions, and you have to jump through obnoxious hoops to do so (launch four instances of the game's executable, join your own multiplayer game, then reload the save. The game treats this like you're playing a multiplayer game your friends abandoned, and every character has an "avatar" flag which fucks with certain quest logic (e.g. the "arena of the one" questlines) and certain plot scenes (e.g. each time you meet your race's god) are duplicated fourfold which is obnoxious.You can clearly see this trend exacerbated with their next game, DOS3: Forgotten Realms edition, where they nerfed the shitty cop-out "hire mercenaries" option (similarly, look at Kingmaker or WotR, where they gave hired adventurers shittier point buy than regular characters, because fuck you) from DOS2, which was at least functional although restricted to a quarter of the way through the game, with BG3's bullshit "here's a list of pre-canned race and class combinations, fuck you if you don't want what's on the list, and no every combination isn't on the list either". Just feels like a bunch of petty and salty devs who don't respect players who don't like their bullshit companions that get shoved on you.
