Everything is just so bland full of tropes. It's sad that the best jRPG that boasts an interesting story, dialogue and characters was made for PC many years ago.
>>
>>3694268
The devs are going to finish the story any day now when the sequel comes out
>>
>>3694270
How god damn hard is it to write an interesting story? I thought it had something to do with Japanese culture, but lately we’ve seen western jRPGs that are just as guilty. I think there’s something about the genre itself that kills any shred of creativity and leads to insipid design.
>>
>>3694268
Never peaking means that they just keep getting better, unlike wrpgs, which have been in decline for decades
>>
>>3694292
>unlike wrpgs
What? We just saw the release of two insanely good rpgs which have no parallel in jRPG land
Disco Elysium
Pentiment
You can’t name a single jRPG that has good dialogue or that doesn’t rely on hero must defeat evil to save kingdom trope. It’s like jRPG are entirely addressed to kids
>>
>>3694282
Competent writers don't get involved with video games, so game stories generally excel more if they have less writing. The wordiest genres naturally suffer the inverse. It's easier to present the player with a well-formed idea and let them imagine the rest.
>>
>>3694305
>the best wrpgs are actually just detective adventure games
If we're actually drawing parallels, Kara no Shoujo and Way of the Samurai series.
>>
>>3694307
You can have less writing and still maintain memorable dialogue (eg. Icewind Dale). I've played many jRPG and there is nothing remarkable in terms of dialogue that comes to mind, with Anachronox being the exception obviously. Perhaps the funniest games I've ever played.

you're confusing action RPG with RPG
but if you strictly want combat, then there are a host of original works for PC that blend excellent character design, story and gameplay
>Tyranny
>Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer
>Fallout 3: New Vegas
>KOTOR2
etc.
You can't name a single jRPG that matches this quality

True Love. *drops mic*

This is a serious thread sirs. I will admit that Final Fantasy Tactics had a certain appeal, but for a genre that pumps out games at insane rates, I'm surprised we haven't yet found a king worthy of the crown
>>
>>3694315
If we're talking about an aspect of writing as minute as dialogue, you should bear in mind JRPGs are translated into English from its most distant language in the world by fourth-rate translators.

>>3694335
>a genre that pumps out games at insane rates
JRPGs have been essentially dead since around 2010.

If you consider Hentai or any other excuse for porn/nudity to be the peak of jRPG, the state of the genre is even more lamentable than I first thought.
>>
>>3694350
I'm assuming you're still focusing on the effectiveness of the dialogue. There have been, but the problem is Japanese expresses loads of meaning, especially tone, through forms of inflection that outright don't exist in English. In addition to its backwards clause structure and high dependence on context, there are loads of parts that outright can't be translated, sometimes even with localization. The importance of prosody also can't be understated. Tengai Makyo 2 is arguably the GOAT and hasn't been translated at all, for example. Sakura Wars has similarly suffered until recently, but I can't comment on its TL. Regarding quality localizations, Tactics Ogre is probably the best. Hat World is obscure but excellent at parts. Hyperdimension Neptunia got one of the best despite being a dogshit game with an esoteric script, it's certainly memorable at least.

Didnt this game kill the company that made it...?
Maybe companies dont want to go bankrupt making games that only you like.

Western stories are rooted in the Iliad and revolve around a hero and the things he visits.
Eastern stories are rooted in Journey to the West which revolves more around the characters.

>Maybe companies dont want to go bankrupt making games that only you like.
It’s not about which game sold the most copies, that’s not a reliable metric in determining quality. Just look at Hollywood and all the Marvel slop in top250 on IMDB.

>>3694387
Thanks for the in-depth explanation! That made a lot of sense. Do you think translations with the original voicing could provide anything?

I don't know if it's the translation or just the original script being bad, but all the dialogues read like shit.

That depends on the player. On one hand, English dub users argue against it because you won't be able to understand the actors' expression if you don't understand the words, and while they've clearly never been around animals or babies, there is a morsel of truth in that you need to understand it to associate specific words with specific variations in tone of voice. Although translations inevitably have clauses scrambled internally, good translators will usually at least keep the general structure of whole sentences the same, so you can figure out how the big parts fit together based on vocal pauses. The original acting is usually much better for various reasons, but appreciating it alongside translated text beyond the actor's expression would first require a passing familiarity with the sounds of the dialects, slang, and forms of keigo. Honorific suffixes are a prominent one for being easy to pick up but usually omitted from translations. Generally, it might be better to approach like music. The untrained listener won't be able to point out the difference between the same melody in C major or D minor, but if they've heard a few similar variations, they'll clearly feel that similarity and difference, which is how motifs are so effective on casual listeners.

Disco Elysium is 5-6 years old. Even if this is a bit thread just think about how "recent" that is.

Perhaps then one should expect to be disappointed in terms of translations, make peace with this and look elsewhere for redeeming qualities. The plot could be one such place but this again is faulty in jrpg. Every plot feels so god damn generic with random names thrown in at every corner. It reads like something chatgpt wrote. Take for example Arc the Lad:

https://arcthelad.fandom.com/wiki/Arc_The_Lad_II
>Waking up from a nightmare, memories of his abduction by the Romalian Army after the destruction of his home of Pyrenia still stinging, Elc'kowala'pule, Elc for short, decides to take a job at the Prodias Hunter Guild as obtained by his friend Lynx (ビビガ, Bibiga). Taking the job of stopping the terrorist Alfred at the Aldia Skyport, he meets a young Monster Tamer named Lieza and ends up escaping from Gallarno's cabal with her, after taking Alfred to justice goes wrong and he ends up getting killed by the mafiosos. Confiding in his best friend and guardian Shu to take care of her as he searches for Dr. Lado while avoiding the police who assume he has kidnapped the girl.

Overloaded story laden with some of the most outrageous names -- 'Alfred the terrorist' lmao. Or Suikoden with MuH 108 StArS of le DesTinY -- why not 100? Or 7? It feels like in every case the plot is suffocating under unneeded complexity, buzzwords, outlandish names, etc. Are there any jrpg that go beyond the tropes?

I'm afraid not. JRPGs are all nonsense.
>>
How come most JRPGs always has some kid or teenager as the protagonist? Especially the modern ones, at least the older JRPGs from the 90s and early 2000s had adult casts.
>>
>>3696458
>the old man is 35
>>
>>3696463
I hate that troupe as well in JRPGs, in real life actual old people still see us 30 year olds as young still.

snicker-snack, so they just copied carrol? i guess it fits the jappedos, with their micropeens.
