Picked up the pair on sale, but have heard mixed things about it (too easy, not-a-rpg, first one is better, etc etc). However, I don't see many talking about the story much, which makes me think it's more about stats and combat.
Would that be correct?
Is there story enough that the first one should be played first? Or is it irrelevant?
Cheers, lads.

There's very little story carryover. DOS1 was like a reboot of the (((Larian))) lore. The two games are set in the same world but like a thousand years apart, there are a few returning characters but the stories aren't directly linked as in other games. For what it's worth, I played 2 then played 1 after, it was alright and I finished it but I'd probably never replay it. Felt like a goofy beta version. Same thing happened when I played Prey then tried to play Dishonored, couldn't get into it

No.
>Or is it irrelevant?
It's irrelevant. The problem with playing 2 over 1 is only when you go back and miss the QoL features, otherwise, this series has flexible lore/worldbuilding that changes as Larian sees fit to accomodate the story

To each their own, I suppose. I renember going back to Kingmaker after playing Wrath, after the initial shock, the less complex systems and overrall 'indie' feel of the game won me over tough it could look like something out of PS2 era at times, especially character models. The painted background at your capital sucks, tough

>when you go back and miss the QoL features
Yup, that's the biggest downside to going backwards.
>I renember going back to Kingmaker after playing Wrath, after the initial shock, the less complex systems and overrall 'indie' feel of the game won me over tough it could look like something out of PS2 era at times, especially character models.
Yeah, I enjoyed WotR but it's too bloated. DnD-derived systems go to shit the more "epic" they get. Kingmaker has the more comfy low level adventuring party in the woods vibe, I get it the appeal.

The story is there, but it sucks. At some point I couldn't take it anymore and just started skipping it.
Playing 1 first is still worthwhile because it arguably did a few things better that make it more fun to play, the armour system in 2 was such a horrible idea.

These games suck. BG3 has the good aspects of Larian games (encounter and world design, interactivity) withouth bein shackled to some of the shittiest systems and itemization in RPG history.

>world design
Name 1 good aspect of Larian world design. "Oooh you can jump here" does not make boring flat maps sprinkled with content suddenly become good.

Purely about combat. The writing is complete dogshit

The main antagonist of DOS2 is literally the player character from the original Divine Divinity from Diablo clone from 2002. But this fact and prior games is irrelevant to your play-through and plot.

Don't play either. They're shit.

I can understand DOS1, being it was kind of whimsical, but I don't know why everyone keeps saying the plot of DOS2 is shit? Is this something that got repeated so many times it became a meme? Maybe it's not wall of text word vomit like POE but it does is its job well enough to keep you interested in the game. Not like BG3 or Veilguard have stellar plots.

If I had one complaint about DOS2's plot, it was that a story about people being born with magical abilities getting imprisoned and lobotomized by religious authorities was way to similar to Dragon Age. And also similar to Dragon Age; they explained too much shit in the last game so the setting has no mystique anymore.

First one is much better, if you can stomach the whimsical style of it. For some reason they ruined the combat system in 2, and they tried to write more serious, but it just ends up being this horrible tonal mismatch of cheese jokes followed by children being skinned alive or something.

Stories aren't Larian's strong point.

The changes from OS1 to OS2 are very polarizing so it's likely that you'll hate one but like the other, like if you love the environment cc and damage in 1 you'll dislike how 2 nerfed them. The things that didn't change are shitty inventory management and vendor-hopping grind
