I do love me some in-depth combat in my RPGs.
What are your favorites?
I've recently played Stoneshard, pic related. It's early access, so I recommend giving it a pirate like I did. I really love it so far and intend to buy it when they actually finish the damn thing, it's just fairly barebones so far. I ended up choosing the mage character and had a really rough time at first, the game is pretty unforgiving. I went with pyromancy and was getting my shit pushed in every encounter, I'm pretty sure I should have went with Electromancy instead for all those debuffs. I can't really give it much of a review since there unfortunately isnt much to it yet, but I recommend keeping an eye on it.

Before that, I played and beat Skald: Against the Black Priory, and that's definitely one of my favorites now. It's a very simple game as far as mechanics go, but refreshingly so. It's one of those where resource management is super important. Combat is fairly satisfying though, it's all grid based, same with Stoneshard. I went with a pure mage in that one too and it was actually really rewarding, especially after I unlocked Thunderclap. That single spell is probably the best ability in the game, you can stunlock every enemy on the screen every turn so long as you hoard mana potions.
10/10 highly recommend. It'll run on any old toaster too.

Now, I'm thinking I'll give the Wasteland games a go, they look neat. What would you recommend?

I've been trying for 20 years, Anon.

What makes it good? Give examples.

Are there other games with good resource management?

There's nothing better than ffta, esp the 2 gba games.

The first example that comes to mind is arrows. You will never have enough arrows if you have you archer doing nothing but shooting dudes every encounter. Ammo is rare, so it helps to be more clever about encounters and only shoot if you really need to. Your first companion character will be a rogue, and you'll definitely want to hand her a dagger immediately. Eventually you'll also get a dedicated ranger that's fantastic as a bow guy, so that'll stretch ammo even thinner. When you camp to heal and such, you have the option of having your party members fletch some arrows and it's almost always worth it. I usually saved all my ammo for only boss fights, but there were some times where shooting ranged dudes saved one of my characters' life.
There's also herbs that you use for potions, which are ridiculously important if you're playing on any difficulty above easy. You really have to decide whether or not to pop a potion often times since those things are precious. Especially the mana potions for your casters, most times you'll not have one when you absolutely need one if you've not been careful.
The game also has a hunger mechanic, you need to be able to feed your dudes as well as dress up their wounds. There'll be times when food is scarce and even times when you just have to let a party member deal with their wound and hope it doesnt impact their combat performance too much.

Sounds good. It's as anon said in the other thread. Shits scarce. Abundance kills rpgs.
Id like to know more about the mechanics without playing it. Unfortunately yt streamers are scum and unable to explain games properly, they only shill.

jagged alliance 3, battle brothers, bg3, rogue trader, underrail.

Piracy is only shameful if you don't buy it after you like it.
I just googled a no commentary video so you can try to get a feel for it yourself before actually trying it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHK_k8jHzDA&ab_channel=flyingmonkeyofus

I really feel the game should be cheaper though, it's a little over 15 American pesos, and it's fairly short with little replayability. That's just me though. If it was something like $9.99, I'd be all for it.

Fantastic games, I love em. I've yeat to play Battle Brothers though, i'll give that a shot.
>bg3
That's the game that murdered my GPU. I really shouldn't have tried running it on my gtx960 but I figured if I could brute force games like Ghostrunner and Observer, I could brute force that too.
As a result, I'm still without a GPU and have to use onboard graphics while I save up several hundred shekels for a new one now.
I have a feeling that game's just cursed, so I'm nervous about it. It WAS pretty fun while it lasted though, I went with Urge as a warlock. The Eldritch blast kills turning me invisible were fun.

At that though, I can highly recommend Divinity: Original Sin 1&2, I really love those games.

Bg3 with self made classes is awesome. Reminds me of nwn.

I like building big versatile armies. I've played some of usual suspects but so far I think my ideal game would be a blend of shining force's between battle stuff which is more standard jrpg like and tactics ogre's class depth and customization. I'm not sure if something has done that

im close to beating it on gtx 970, had a great idea to lock my fps at 40, cause i was not a fan of my 10 year old gpu drawing 180W non stop, CPU has been 90%++ usage all that time and still going strong.

Worst part is it would be easy af to make. I like games where the whole squad can be utilised, like sending troops on a mission, as done in fft.

I really do enjoy Stoneshard but they're so slow on development.
I've got enough hours out of it that I can't really complain.

I have a 3080 and when I played it at launch, act 1 would get 100-120 fps and act 3 would get 30-60 fps. Some YouTuber with a reviewer copy had a 4090 and it would chug down to 20fps at times

I enjoyed Dungeons of Neheulbok. The light tone and story was a nice change of pace for this genre. Very good gameplay. The company that made it has half a dozen other tactical RPGs
