Technically every video game is an RPG because you're not playing as yourself you're playing a 'role'.

even if you are playing minesweeper?

Your role playing a minesweeper so yes.

Yep discovered this truth years ago dialoging with a couple of buddies. Call of duty itself is an RPG. It can be hard to face the reality that your favorite genre either means everything or nothing and that there is no in between.

All is RPG or nothing is.
>>
>>3909513
>All is RPG or nothing is
or you know maybe making all your conclusions about a thing based on a name of the thing alone is fundamentally faulty
Especially considering that name comes from a different time and served a specific purpose of differentiating a tabletop game genre with miniatures from tabletop wargames with miniatures in a predominantly wargaming tabletop community
>>
>>3909520
Precisely! RPG used to mean something and now it means everything! Or nothing! It's an ever evolving umbrella term that is so broad it wraps right around to meaning nothing! Or everything!

What is a JRPG?
What is an RPG?

There's no answer to this question! When you examine both questions you eventually find that the answer to both is "whatever i fucking say it it is" it's a meaningless tautology of a question. The terms are umbrella and arbitrarily defined moment to moment!
>>
"animated film" is an oxymoron since a film is filmed with a camera. Animation and Film are different media lumped together because of marketing.
The rise of CGI made it even more complicated and nonsensical because now media thats's 95% animated is presented as a "live action" film
>>
Ignoring all the postmodern semantic manslaughter going on here

The term RPG originally emerged in the context of tabletop gaming. Taking on the role of a character in an alternate world made RPGs distinct from the overwhelming majority of tabletop and party games that people were used to.
>Poker
>Rummy
>Chess
>Scrabble
>Trivial Pursuit
>Pictionary
And so on.

Videogames, on the other hand, often simulated an alternate world and had you take on a character in that alternate world. This was especially true by 3rd gen. Even if the setting was fanciful and alternate the game world was abstract, you still "took on the role" of Mario or Rastan or Pitfall Harry.

So most videogames involved playing a role, unlike most tabletop games. So RPG in the context of videogames means something different than it means on tabletop. A Videogame RPG is a game that is like or has evolved from the tabletop RPGs without evolving so far as to be a distinctly different genre.

>RPG used to mean something and now it means everything!
It doesn't mean everything, though.
It's a term of art. People who think it means everything are retarded, either deliberately or naturally. They don't know how language works.
>>
I like the term Action RPG for games like Skyrim. Even if they got rid of player controlled stats I'd still call it that, so long as in some sense you have the ability to create various player types. Like wizard, archer etc. Action means it's not all math based. Role Play signals you have some control over their job, and then you're allowed to create your own backstory for this character. A pure RPG wouldn't rely on player physical skill/reaction time.

>the "genre labels don't mean anything" crowd when you ask them to describe a game without using genre labels
>>
>>3909623
They don't mean anything when you critically examine them but its still usefull to have cathegories. I don't think anyone argues that we should stop using labels just that they're not as rigid as some may think.

>They don't mean anything when you critically examine them but its still usefull to have cathegories.
In other words, your "critical examination" is postmodern brainrot, not real critical thinking or linguistics.

>>

It depends. How well developed is your "role"? Does the fact that you're "in character" affect your choices during the game?
If you're just gunning down swarms of aliens, then there isn't much opportunity for characterisation. It's hardly a RPG.

What about OFF?
>>

Genre labels are useful because they cluster media together and you can understand them through their resemblances and relations.
>>
>>3907199
Tecnically you may be correct, but practically genre labels work on a "you know it when you see it" basis where the linguistic meaning of the words themselves matter less than their use for categorizing things for the reasons >>3913125 gave.
While you can argue in bad faith about what an RPG is, the truth is that most people know at least roughly what it is, or learn it by osmosis by taking part in the gaming sphere.
>>
We should kill all these labels are le bad people. Draw, quarter then hang 'em, and everyone related up to two generations
>>
If all games were RPGs you'd think the military and police would be a lot more concerned about civvies buying them

Ffs a linguistic definition is just a description of an idea. All you proved is that the linguistic definition isn't specific enough to accurately describe the idea. Yet again sophists are retards incapable of abstract thought, you'd think you'd give it up after 3000 years of straight retardation.

In Baten Kaitos, You play as a guardian spirit to the main character. You are not the main character. I liked that.
