Only 4 and underworlds. Then play Barony.

Ultima I - III. Extremely primitive by today's standards. Mostly very simplistic early 80s dungeon crawlers with a bare-bones overworld. Very little story line or interactivity. Even gets confusing in part II when you start skipping around time and going to earth and flying in space ships. Skip the game but read up on the lore.

Ultima IV is gameplay wise similar to the first games but has a much better story. Shifts from killing ultimate baddie to achieving enlightenment by being a good person. Still sort of primitive but vital for establishing the connective tissue of the series.

Ultima V was the very first video game I ever played, around 1988 or so. To me, its still a top 10 ever game. Playing it gives me some of.the coziest feelings imaginable. That being said, it's very much a product of its time. Combat and dungeon crawling can get very tedious unless you cheese the hell out if the game and give everyone magic throwing axes. The end area in the underworld is also extremely tedious, climbing over endless mountains in the dark. The story is great if you managed to get here after playing the first four games, making previous lore make more sense.

Ultima VI still holds up in my opinion. Colorful, fun, warm graphics. More talkative characters with a bit more personality than V. Quite a few secrets. Good story. Definitely worth a go.

Ultima VII / Part 2 is the gold standard of RPGs in my opinion and still in my top 3. Deep, well thought out story. Huge world to explore with lots of characters to talk to and secrets to find. Ties up a lot of the loose ends from the first few games in a clever way. Perhaps the only real down side is the combat is pretty garbage, but these games were never really about combat and more about exploring. A must play.

Ultima VIII - IX both absolutely crap. This was during/after the acquisition by EA. Everything good built up from IV-VII was destroyed by badly designed and buggy games.

Play both Underworlds!

There is literally a new ultima thread like every 3 days on this board. Do you seriously think it’s not worth playing?

4 and above with fan patches. the "worlds of " games were basically U5 reskins. skip 8 and 9, maybe.
Underworlds had more influence on modern RPGs with realtime combat than any of the main Utlimas.

i don't see it but ok.

>gold standard
bad combat is bad, definitely not gold. Serpent Isle also made the plot progress extremely linear.

No, you definitely shouldn't play one of the most beloved and influential series of all time.

I tried to play Ultima but the weird slanted top-down view gives me nausea. Jrpg top-down ok. Isometric Bg2 top-down ok. Ultima top-down gives me motion sickness.

parts 4 to 7 are the pinnacle of early RPG gaming. if you can cope with primitive graphics then yes.
>>
>>3943497
Out of the ones I've tried, the only one I was able to get into was 5. It was pretty enjoyable, though.

I ended up dropping Ultima 7 because of the perspective. It is the only game I have ever dropped purely because of the graphics. I have no problem at all playing ASCII roguelikes or old 80's games from before I was born, but Ultima 7's perspective is so fundamentally wrong and hideous to me that I can't stand to look at it.

Quest for the avatar is a game that will probably never be made ever again.

>goes on a quest to become a virtuous and good person using a fantasy version of chivalry and Christian values

The more the west falls, the more likely it is that this game will never be equaled.

Cavalier projection. Was meant for drawing military maps of fortresses and such

How do you save in xu4? Do you just ESC and quit?

>While playing the game, exit the current Dungeons or City, then use the Q key to Save your current state to file. Once saved, use Ctrl-X to exit the game.

I was playing gold box games in the '80s. I still never liked Ultima even in its glamor period in the early '90s. I was never into the ren faire style of late boomer/early gen X thing, which always felt like what Ultima was about more than just adapting tabletop RPGs.

IIRC Lord Brit did play DnD, and was probably influenced by DnD. and the goldbox games are mostly based on earlier editions of DnD.

according to BraveAI:
>Richard Garriott, known as Lord British, was primarily influenced by Dungeons & Dragons and J.R.R.Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
> He was an avid player of Dungeons & Dragons, which inspired the foundational role-playing and narrative structures in his games.
>He drew significant inspiration from Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, aiming to create a "living world" with its own mythos, history, and immersive lore—elements central to the Ultima series.

obviously the earlier you go the more D&Dish it was, but around 4 and 5 when they hit the point where they made it so the avatar was supposed to be "you" from the real world being transported into Ultima it drifted further and further into a ren fair feeling thing.

Just play this anon's Ruins & Riches server. It has elements from all the Ultima games. >>>/vm/2045157
