I feel like North and South is probably deeper than your average Risk game.
It really makes use of geography, if you hold North Carolina, you get reinforcement every turn.
The only other way to raise the army is to collect taxes using the railroad, but you can't collect taxes if your train line is disrupted.

Also doing anything in the west is a nightmare because Indians will attack you.

Only bad thing in this game is the platforms levels, which are bizarre, I don't know why a strategy game needed platformers, especially since they didn't teach AI how to play them.

RTS? Huh, I always associated Halo with brainless FPS.

It's a pretty fun game for a console RTS.

The strategic layer as overworld where you need to reconquer provinces from the Romans to reach the levels was a fun concept, I don't know if it has been done since.

Mech Commander I think.

Platformer section were the worst part.
Ultimately it's just Risk, player only has a chance because AI is retarded

i rented command and conquer 64, couldn't figure out how to build stuff but i liked it

Either this or another turn based hex wargame about the US civil war. The first RTS I fully played though the Shogun Total War and I remember the graphics being shit even for the time.

Warcraft 2 on the PS1, my first RTS on the PC however was Age of Empires 2.
>>
I don’t recall, but I think it was Red Alert 2 or Tiberian Sun at some point before 2004.
I’m a thirdie so I’m playing games about 4 or so years after they’re released.

The original Red Alert.

Loved it. Still holds up pretty good in the remaster.

Hammurabi on zx spectrum

I would still recommend playing Heroes of Might and Magic 2 especially with fheroes2 engine rewrite, the art direction and music are at least on par with HoMM3 (and IMO superior in some instances) and fheroes2 adds in better resolutions as well as quality of life and AI improvements without fucking with the base game experience.

Funny enough my first strategy game was Dune 2 on Sega Genesis. It's weird to think a little kid like me was into strategy games. I had to be no more than 7 years old.

I can't even get my nephews playing anything strategy with losing interest after 30 minutes.

I remember playing PS1 port of Populous at my friends house. I wonder why the RTS console ports ended, there being so many early ones would suggest that there was a market for them.

Not entirely sure but I think it was Lego Rock Raiders on the PC

American Conquest (apparently just Cossacks but in the Americas).

Are slavs usually too cheap to hire good voice actors (listened to the english version of the intro and it sucks ass in comparison to the spanish one of my link)?

I was five or so at the time, so the campaign was pretty much off limits, but it had a campaign editor and that was all I needed.

I tried playing this for the first time a couple of weeks ago. I had no fucking clue what I was doing, it took me like an hour of restarting to figure out how to win a chariot race but then after that it was like it was in a different language.
>>1749517
cnc on ps1. Dad rented it but couldn't figure out how to play until I tried and managed to deploy the construction yard like 5 minutes before we had to return it.
first strategy game would've been sim city when I was like 5.

I don't actually recall what came first. This was for sure the first one I owned but I also remember playing Rome Total War at a friend's house and being amazed by the scale of the battles. I would have been about 10 for both
>>
More or less inherited my dad's games collection, which was almost exclusively strategy games. What came first is hard to say, but I know that we both really liked AoE2. We would set up LAN matches to comp-stomp every other weekend.
Also know I played a lot of Close Combat, Command and Conquer, Rollercoaster Tycoon (although that was mum's game) Civ 2 and HoMM 1 and 2. HoMM 2 he had on the gameboy colour of all things, so I can't say thata I remember it as fondly as >>1750074. It was a good game for a turn-of-the-millenia handheld, but the original on PC was way better.

This game gets shit on for being Haloe RTS. But it has one beat RTS campaigns out there.

The mission when you need to defend the transport, while civilians are running for their life was a great mission. So we're all the flood missions.

It was some completely forgettable shovelware with slider bars that controlled your production in your cities and if you didn't fuck with the slide bars every turn you could lose production points a horrible Civilization clone. 12 year old me returned it to EB games and the wonderful salesmen recommended I check out Command & Conquer instead. Changed my life.

>Dumbass non functional shield swinging from your left gun arm that's going to fuck every single shot up when you turn to aim and your big ass dangle boy is swinging back and forth
God I've come to hate not starship troopers not Lord of the rings not fading suns so much. Not 1 original idea name 1 war trannies. Pro tip you can't because every last idea was lifted from superior IP. That's what makes c&c special. There was nothing like it. War hammer at best is an axis & allies kit bash.
Muh xenomorph. Muh power armor. Done decades before and better.

I have vague memories of playing either this game or some other title with red vs blue enemies via SEGA Channel in the 90s. The first strategy game I really remember getting into was StarCraft.
