Darkest Hour is only $2 on Steam and GoG.Whats your excuse for not playing the best Hearts of Iron game, anon? Also Darkest Hour thread.
>>1844184I can't run it.
It's too outdated and basic
It's free.
>>1844184HoI 4 has surpassed this game in every single way. There is no reason to play this ancient relic of a game unless $2 is all you can afford to even spend on a video game.
>>1844791"Surpassed"This game is not that game. I would play Darkest Hour for different reasons than HOI 4.
I already own it but I get overwhelmed and don't know what I should be doing especially concerning tech and the economy system.
>>1844896It's really not that complicated, tech is basically just juggling tech teams, and I never even bother with the economy it can be entirely automated. Have you been trying to manage the economy on your own?
>>1844791hoi4 is for 14 year olds and larp visual novel mods
never played it, just watched my dad play it when I was a wee lad. It's 2 eurorupees, whatever, I'll get it anon.
I've been playing Darkest Hour a lot lately and the verdict is grim... The game is bloated. The way decisions like "Offensive Chit" influence the gameplay is undefendable. This decision is just complete bullshit and shows how little concern has been given to balancing. Using OC in the WW1 scenario just let's you roll over the enemy with 2-3x their movement speed, it's actually ridiculous. The WW1 scenario is completely broken anyways and the idea to play from 1914 to WW2 is just a fucking meme... Also the way mobilization is implemented via decisions. Everything is so damn gamey... But I just got Armageddon/Doomsday to give these two another try. I really remember enjoying these when OG Kaiserreich was released. Did anyone ever play Arsenal of Democracy?
Peak HOI, but you need to not be retarded or have ADHD to enjoy it.
reminder to get the best DH modhttps://github.com/BoneHorror/EODAIP
>>1845505quick rundown?
>>1845505Bro Blood and Iron is literally just Edge of Darkness +, I mean just the fact it shows terrain on political map mode already makes it S-tier, but it also adds more events, unique units (Blackshirts, SS, Kamikaze, etc.), and custom sprites for almost every country, with custom artwork. It ain't even close bro, I feel like this is how Darkest Hour was always supposed to be.I'm sure the AI improvements in EODAIP are badass but I can't really go back after Blood and Iron.
>>1845491>and the idea to play from 1914 to WW2 is just a fucking memeWdym? the WW1 scenario only goes to 1920, unless you mean it *would* be dumb...which then yeah I guess...Also the WW1 scenario deliberately is suppossed to play completley differently to the WW2 scenario, I wouldn't say it's broken as much as it's balanced differently, everything is about attrition and frontline pushes are much rarer. To be fair, it's not really the focus of the game, I think it's really cool they added it (mostly so mods can improve it), but it was never gonna be as fleshed out as the WW2 scenario.>>1845676Also to add on to what I said here; Blood and Iron, along with having all the WW2 events from EOD, also adds events to the WW1 scenario, where EOD only focused on WW2 I believe.
>>1845682In my playthrough as Germany I barely experienced any attrition and frontline pushes were very much possible. All you needed was a bunch of cav, which are supplied for an offensive (no Offensive Chit even required). You basically use them like you`d armoured spearheads, just without the combined arms combat modifier. Once the breakthrough has been made it was super easy to pull off encirclements on the western front. What I really disliked about the WW1 scenario was how cav is just superior to both Inf (like armoiur is supperior to Inf in WW2 scenarios) AND to artillery. If you are looking at the 1914 stats the much higher mobility of cav divisions makes it more versitile than inf and the cav brigade attachment is just straight up better than arty in terms of fucking soft attack...
>>1844896Just experiment and find what works. Play as a country you hate so you won’t mind losing.
>>1845491The balance in the WW1 scenario got fucked up from the most recent updates. If you play the 1.02 version the combat is much slower and tends to produce much more historical outcomes. In 1.05 the central powers basically always win.
>>1844184>Darkest Hour> best Hearts of Iron gameBut that's not how you spell Hearts of Iron 3?
too clunky
>>1844184I've had this thing in my Steam library for years but never got around to doing a proper campaign. Basically I'm just really unmotivated to learn the game; I even watched several let's plays of it and could probably do a full campaign now if I actually sat down to do one, but almost a decade of HOI4 crap being thrown in my face by the community made me sick of WWI and WWII as concepts for wargames in general. I don't even play HOI4, I tried it during Waking The Tiger a bunch and the focus tree completely ruins the game like how mana ruined EUIV for me shortly after launch, but just seeing it everywhere and people being autistic about the base game, KR, TNO, and the other meme mods made me sick of the time period.I think DH is a worthwhile game if you think HOI4 when played the way the devs intended by drawing meme arrows on the map is a worthwhile game. In prior DH threads, anons showed me that you can beat the game basically with just two different unit types because the AI fucks up doing air support, which is one of the reasons why now you'll see anons telling people to pirate HOI4 instead which would have been a crazy take five years ago but not today with the improvements HOI4 got over the years.
>>1844184>is only $2don't do this here you fucking retards. 99.9999% of the time your thread is up, the post will be a lie.
>>1844267genuinely confusedhow
Can I get away with just spamming fighters + CAS for the whole game? It worked well enough for a fall weiss and fall gelb but I stopped my playthrough before declaring war on the soviets
>>1844184I played over a 1000 hours in the last three years so I am kind of tired of it.
>>1844184HoI III is better
>>1858992It’s different and DH is a lot easier to play.
>>1844184I played it in high school a shitload 20 years ago.
It's a flawed masterpiece. Most of its issues are baked into the HOI engine of the time, modders did what they could with a clunky set of foundations. The tragedy is they didn't understand what the player base wanted and failed to follow the pathway opened by the success of this mod. In that sense it truly is the pinnacle of the series.Of course some things have improved, but much more has gotten shittier and dumber and lowest common denomination focused. HOI IV is a dumbed down politically safe flavour free map painter for retards who like buying their games by the slice.
>>1858941If you're a naval power you can cripple almost any opponent by building a couple of shitty interwar carriers & carrier groups as in naval combat, the actual stats of your units count less than combat distance which CAG have a ridiculous distance toEssentially if you make like 2 interwar carriers with shitty CAGs and a couple screens, you can demolish almost any enemy fleet because the CAG count as incredibly accurate extra long range guns, even if you're using 30s biplanes and it's 1945I did this as Australia in my last run and almost singlehandedly destroyed the Imperial Japanese Navy by patrolling between the Chinese coast and New Guinea. They lost almost all their transport fleets and start steadily losing ground in China and were only able to land 1-2 divisions at a time in Indonesia and the Philippines
>>1844184I played one game as Spain trying to wrap my head around it and literally nothing happened, I was just researching tech and the game ended before I noticed. It is, dare I say it, a meme game.
>>1859395>play war game>don't war>nothing happens
>>1859459Agreed. Awful game design.
>>1845491>Did anyone ever play Arsenal of Democracy?I played it a lot about 15 years ago, it was fun, but I had nothing to compare it to. Was mostly my first HoI. I did play a little bit of vanilla HoI 1. I skipped 3 and played a good amount of HoI4 but am sick of that.Is Darkest Hour worth picking up? The sale's over on Steam but GOG still has it for two bucks. I got sick of HoI4's bloatmaxxing and the last time I played (a year or two ago) I honestly thought it was more fun vanilla than with all the dumb DLC and meme focus trees and shit. Going back to the older games might be a fun change of pace.
>>1859710DH is the better version of Arsenal of Democracy, IMO. Just been playing the WWI scenario as AH and chilling on the western front with my Germbros after curbstomping Russia in 1914 until we research tanks and TAC tech to breakthrough :3
>>1844184ive got a few hundred hours in this game on steam alonei really like it, it's been a few years since i've played more than a few hours here and there, i should binge itnever played it multiplayer but also i dont really care for that
Come home, White Autist...
>>1862026>AoDOnly if they release the update they have been talking about for years.
I've put like 1,000 hours in this game, it's fun well worth the price. I'd rather play hoi4 if I wanted a WW2 gsg now, ideally a remastered hoi3 is what I want but whatev.
Do you guys feel if you own DH is retarded to buy HOI2 vanilla? i just finished my first DH Full game and i think i love it, now i installed the Edge of Darkness mod and i think i like it even more because of all the historical accurate events, but i also own HOI 4 on steam, so i'm worrying that i am missing valuable time playing an old not so complete version of HOI 4, so what do you guys think i should play? DH is a good introduction to the HOI series to get into HOI 4 later or is that other way around? what are the main different between them? seems like DH feels more "gamey" more like a tabletop experience, and HOI 4 more like an normal 4x game with RPG elements, what i should play guys? i also feel retarded that i just got a grip how to play DH and started a new Edge of Darkness game i gonna start playing HOI 4, i also own HOI 3, but i never played it, and i know its even more complex than DH and HOI 4 so, i not gonna mess with it now, WHAT I SHOULD DO GUYS?
>>1867776Yes, in the launcher change from "Darkest Hour Full" to "None" and you've got base HoI2ARMA
>>1867798Yeah and about what play first DH or HOI4? what should i do? i can't decide anything!

>>1844184The UI is one of the worst I've ever seen
I loved this game though I honestly havent played it in years. Good times though. Good times...

I don't like how one single unit can invade whatever provinces of enemy territory and hold large swathes of provinces if there aren't any counter-units around, it's so unrealistic

>>1868691Start as a minor in 36 to get a feel for small scale operations and managing research and production >Allies: >Canada - good tech teams, decent industry but low manpower. Has theory tech teams that let you to switch to blitzkrieg and capacity to build an army sized mechanized unit for breakthroughs before USA gets involved. Can also research good aircraft, build TAC, INT and maybe even STRAT Brazil: ok industry, bad tech teams and one brazillion manpower. Build a huge infantry based army, join allies and invade north Africa behind Italy's back, or Spain if it joins axis>Australia: shit manpower, ok industry and OP navy tech teams. Perfect for figuring out naval warfare (build carrier fleets and BTFO the japanese navy)Axis:>Hungary: start out shit but decent manpower and very good prospects for growth. If you're fast you can gobble up Yugoslavia before the germs do and if you build up a cav/tank force you can bumrush Ukraine during Barbarossa and steal their ic and resources. Only axis power that has decent tech teams to rush both atomic weapons and ICBMs iirc for endgame fun>Italy: you literally can't do worse than they did irl
>>1844184it's $1 now
