i'm looking to go through this guide with my brother since we're both tired of Age of Empires II and IV, but it appears to be about 10 years out of date. i'm considering updating it but need some open-ended input from strategy game NERDS like yourselves.some basic questions to start:1. is there already an updated version of this guide?2. is C&C2 actually a good place to start? why or why not?3. "wait for Dawn of War 3" is an item on this list, which has since released. is it good?4. why is SC2 in "purgatory"? has SC1 outlived its sequel?5. what strategy games have come out in the last 10 years that should be added to this list? 6. which games currently on this list should be *removed* from this list?
>>1892683>but it appears to be about 10 years out of dateIt's also fucking retarded.I was obsessed with DuneII as a kid but it should *never* appear on a recommendation list, and certainly not anywhere near the entry point. And it really need to pick whether it's a theme-based graph or a gameplay-based one. DoW1 into Cossacks into Empire Earth? WCIII into AoEII into SW:BG? This is fucking useless for a non-RTS player trying to find an entry point that will click.
>>1892683Beyond All Reason is another RTS akin to total annihilation and supcom, together they are the Holy Trinity of macro RTS.In the opposide side of the spectrum there is the Holy Trinity of micro RTS (starcraft, warcraft 3)>inb4 that's not a trinityfuck off
>>1892683I recall anons having a discussion about recompiling the guide a few months ago. I paid no attention to the thread because the OP pissed me off.
>>1892750>I was obsessed with DuneII as a kid but it should *never* appear on a recommendation listWhy? I have replayed it a few years ago. Its only real problem is no bandboxing with subsequent "control groups". As long as you play it with using your keyboard too and not just trying to click everything it's fine.>certainly not anywhere near the entry point. That one's true.>And it really need to pick whether it's a theme-based graph or a gameplay-based one. It's easy to infer that it is indeed a feels first chart, not a gameplay first chart. Sorry about your autism, bro.
>>1892683The guide was dumb anyways as a recommendation thing. It's mostly a tracker for the mechanical evolution of the genre. Just play games you find interesting and fun, who knows if a different mechanics set than the one you're tired of will freshen the game up for you
>>1893294would you say the guide was trying to follow mechanics or follow themes?why would C&C2 be the starting point?
>>1893294>It's mostly a tracker for the mechanical evolution of the genre. Not really. Notice how far removed RA1 and RA2 are, for the most obvious example. It's a chart made by anons relying on their preferences with some adjustments made for potential newcomers to the genre back when the thing was made.
>>1892683>wait for dawn of war 3 like the rest of uslmao that aged poorlyretribution is great and still has players to this day, only plebs that cant handle the fact that you cant afk while playing it dislike it
>>1894074DoW 3 is bad?
>>1892683Probably best to do an overall 'recommendations', grouping them by how they operate mechanically. Maybe different starting points for such styles if you want to keep elements of a flow chart. A plethora of remasters have also hit the genre since, many good and bad.>>1895157Yeah, DoW3 is legitimately bad and has effectively killed its series. It's boring as fuck. DoW2 might be polarizing to DoW1 fans, but it does what it sets out to do well, outside of terrible skirmish AI.
>>18926832. No clue I started from a bootleg Total Annihilation and I feel it's a okay starting point, then I went straight to C&C33.It's a steaming pile of shit don't touch it4.SC1 is miles better in SC2Both games are effectively abandoned but SC1 was left in a very good place for MP and campaign still has a great story and challenging missionsSC2's campaign has a good chapter 1, medicore chapter 2 and shit chapter 3Can't speak on MP balance but a lot of people are saying it's not doing too hot at the moment and the patches are made by a "Balance Council" which is just pro-players trying to buff their race as much as possible while nerfing others so they can get as much money as possible while tournaments are still happening5.>Homeworld Deserts of KharakPurgatory, I liked it but a lot of people don't>ICBMDEFCON but with actual RTS mechanics, is getting a sequel that adds a lot of features that people modded into the the first game and liked>Nebulous: Fleet CommandWhat happens if you turn Homeworld into a MP only skirmish autism simulator. Very good if you are into it, recently scrapped the campaign mode because the dev had a lot of great ideas that he couldn't make work together for shit.Paradox Grand strategy slop:>StellarisPurgatory>Victoria 3Purgatory>Hearts of Iron IV Purgatory>Crusader kings 3Purgatory>ImperatorShadow Realm>Beyond all ReasonNot really OUT atm, a Total Annihilation clone that is made by the community, decently fun and even has a PvE gamemode that is also decently fun. Community is a shit>Phoenix PointXCOM spiritual succesor that pulled a kickstarter scam, it's okay, purgatory>WARNOWargame Red Dragon 2? Kinda? Not Really? Probably good enough to be next to the other titles>Total War Warhammer 2 and 3Didn't play it but it's there, but be ready to consume DLC>New company of heroesNo clue didn't play it>Hoeworld 3Shadow Realm>New Age of EmpiresDidn't play it>Various indie games that I can't be arsed to list
is universe at war any good? i have it on steamhalo wars is not on the list

>>1905316The pic and its predecessors were rightfully called bad back when they were new.
>>1892683where is battle realms?
