No love for Space Haven?
Great ship-building galaxy strategy game with crew management elements.

>Great ship-building galaxy strategy game with crew management elements.
As nice as it looks, it has barely any content after 5+ years of development. Also, what should take one hour of game play to accomplish will take you three.

>>1895405
>dumping the first google result
>>
I got bored after an hour.
>>
>>1895402
gave me a few hours of enjoyment I guess. It's better than most in its niche
>>
>>1895402
I really want to like it but I can't, at least the way it is now, but playing it two years after the last time I did, the core gameplay had no change:
>Make barely functional space box
>Enter derelict with armed crew
>Clear of aliens (and now robots!)
>Wait many ingame days to dismantle and recycle useful stuff
>Mining isn't productive until mid-game
>Need too many growing beds to feed a modest crew size
>Combat is bunching up with the most firepower in a corridor
>Crew doesn't feel distinct beyond max skills and meaningless traits
>Slowly research stuff that should have been unlocked since the start
>Bored of doing the same thing over and over while boarding becomes slowly more difficult
Maybe if you like building ships or interior design, you can have more fun with it, but the gameplay is so barebones and additions in the last two years doesn't seen to address any of the problems I have with it. It's not content that it's the problem, the basic gameplay loop is repetitive, unengaging and unrewarding.
>>
>>1895402
First time I hear about this game but it reminds me of that one spacestation management game Double Fine abandoned. Spacebase DF-9 is its name from what I've checked.
>>
>>1895608
this... I was hyped for it but the gameplay killed me

The Game was interesting and looked cool early on then a random slave update out of nowhere basically tanked a lot of fan hype and potential buyers. Honestly don't think they recovered since then.

I like Spess Haven. Very brootal game imo. Mechanics aren't extremely brutal per se but the situations you get into are sort of.

Development takes two million years though.

No point in temperature controlling refineries, especially multiple ones, that are often working around the clock. All that heat isn't worth controlling, so just lock out the entire area and let people go in and out with suits instead.

>literally makes no difference
I don't care about aesthetics, but I sure as shit insult other people's aesthetics

>I have a team of dedicated super-soldiers that one shot everything with laser rifles
Oh la dee da, form and function dont matter for ugliness simply because you can ignore it (ignoring that for most of the fucking game you need to get to the point you can ignore it)

>no attention to logistics of materials or workforce
See above.

My ship is a carefully considered blend of form, function, and symmetry. Yours looks like any other generic barge out there.

>*poos on you*

>>1896437
I was in the process of putting together a cruiser/destroyer escort before i just gradually stopped playing. Tbh there's nothing encouraging multiple-ship playstyle imo and its a pain in the ass transferring men and materiel back and forth. Nothing beyond more efficient point use for weapons, iirc, anyway.
>>
>>1895667
The research thing sort of killed my interest, prior to v10 there was no research and you just had everything at the start. Research doesn't feel meaningful, just something you devote someone to for a while to slowly unlock stuff so you can fully enjoy the game.

I would've said all the basic stuff should've been unlocked from the start and finding new designs should've been done by searching derelicts for truly wondrous stuff.

Just start with the latest version. I'm being a bit hyperbolic for the sake of it. The game isn't unsalvageable or anything and is "fun" for a bit.
>>
>more barebones and one-note than fucking rimworld
Impressive, I didn't think it was possible
>>
>>1907787
It essentially is RW with SOS2 mod, but built from the ground up as a space game rather than crudely hacked into one. At least that's what I was looking for in this game.

And so far it delivers on that front.
Atmospherics sim for different gases, directional thermal effects with near zero K in shade and hundreds in direct starlight, good stuff.
A shame the realism wrt thermodynamics ends there, these ship systems run insanely cool and magically get rid of excess heat without radiating it out. Woulda been cooler with DV Rings of Saturn style realistic lowtech heatpunk.
>>
>>1895402
Everything looks like a box.would be cool with ze levels
>>
>>1907186

>>
>>1907549
OP here ive played it for 4 years, just get the current version, the AI and economy is way better. factions expand and fight each other even when you're not looking so the whole game feels pretty alive. I've never been to the end yet idk what people are talking about it being "easy"
>>
>>1908021
No he's a schizo dev
>>
>>1908026
There's territory?
>>
>>1908041
yes. I think it's randomly set up for each new playtrough too
>>
>>1908026
Well I did download alpha 19 and played it for a while. My ship's at 3300 mass now with all basic resources finally stabilized.

>idk what people are talking about it being "easy"
Well, it does get easier once you get over the "everything is constantly running out" early game phase. Even though there are things I can't do yet (like taking on armed pirate ships), there's no longer a constantly looming risk of game over on the horizon. It can only get easier from now on.
Getting started even on medium difficulty was surprisingly a challenge. It seems you could easily get fucked if you get bad RNG on sector resources, pick wrong research order or just prioritize wrong things otherwise. Also I was desperately low on infra blocks for the longest time because I like to constantly adjust my designs and test things. Sucks that build tools use them.

>factions expand and fight each other even when you're not looking
So that's a new feature? It seems pretty cool so far. I've already seen the military take over one sector and another is asking me to build a station for them. Factions fighting each other is also great for the opportunistic looter in me. Though it seems there's a small bug, faction ships killed in sectors outside yours don't show up as wrecks on the map before you travel to that sector. But at least the live ship markers disappear. Also I wish you could claim any wreck you want. At least fully functional ships that you fought over. Sucks to find a cool ship design that you'd like to add to your fleet but the only option is to scrap it. Can't even save a blueprint or something to copy it later.

And while I'm here, what's the meta for dealing with alien parasites on your ship? Is there a way to flush them out? Or a way to prevent the facehugger attacks, or at least stop the infection? Would drafting the sleeping victim help? I don't have advanced medical facilities of my own yet so shit's very dangerous.
>>
>>1903401

>No point in temperature controlling refineries
That exploit has been fixed, refineries slow down and eventually shut down from overheating. Or break.
>>
Did he ever change the random crew system? I played it a long time ago but got tired of it because the first 10 minutes was always just mashing random to get a good stat distribution.
>>
>>1908715
Collecting resources and scavenging is fun but you're right in it not exactly being dwarf fortress in space.
>>
>>1909219
It's has none of dorf fort's jank but all the depth.

I can't believe that anyone in 2024 would think DF's gameplay is deep.
You might want to try Rimworld with SOS2 mod if you want DF in space. RW mogs DF any day but SOS lacks some of Space Haven's depth when it comes to space features and gameplay.
>>
>>1909582
The day a space vampire can haunt my ship and start killing off the crew is the day I say space haven has depth.
>>
>>1909596
>haunt my ship and start killing off the crew
Alien parasites already do that. Sporal infections are even more insidious, although not as lethal. So much for dorf "depth" lol

Been playing for a while now. This game is so fun. Just finished all research about a month ago.

Now what should I do with the remaining 3 system points?
Maybe remodel the nose to include 3 autoturrets? 3 asymmetric PDs covering the airlocks?
I could also free additional 2 system points by removing one of the generators. The ship does't really need more than one. It's just for backup atm.

I'm sure they'll get there within 4 years or so. The upcoming alpha 20 is introducing a framework for the Exodus fleet and its main questline. Maybe we'll get a Cult of New Haven / betrayal questline in update 21.
>>
The game is fun for a short stint during the initial struggle phase. Once you've got enough shit to keep your crew alive for 20+ days, printing rifles to buy ship parts and get some weapons, you're just on cruise control and realize there's actually very little to do. I haven't even gotten to Eden, but I don't see what else there is aside from more AI mulching with ship to ship bombardment.
>>
>>1916202
That's where the game starts for me. The early game hobo phase is never terribly interesting in games.

I love how ship to ship combat plays out, but admittedly it's really hard to tweak your difficulty settings and gameplay to get the most fun encounters.

Trash fucking game
Getting anything done is a major fucking chore, takes too long and your NPC's are brain damaged idiots that will do everything the longest most painful way possible.
And worst of fucking all, you can't see a characters portrait before accepting them in to your crew, aka you have a 80% chance of hiring some black nubian night nigger in to your crew.
Anything that needs to be done quickly to prevent everyone dying requires you to repetitively micromanage the same person.
As great of a concept it is and how nice it can look, shit gameplay will always ruin it.

This.
The best the game has to offer is the initial construction of your ship and boarding pirates.
Cleaning up derelicts quickly becomes boring.
Mining feels lame: it makes me angry that I can get nothing out of a solid space rock.
The final 1/3 of my playthrough was just flying through all the star systems without stopping.
I feel like the game is designed to last two hours so you can't get a refund on Steam

In early game, you are constantly running low on some sort of important resource so any activity not related to getting important resources is a waste.
