I'm using this for my Italian manager playthrough never managed to get 5atb formations to work before but I got promoted from serie c in my 2nd season. I use just the one wide centre back as the dribble less for regular cb is preferable at this level and 2 cbs on stay wider instruction creates big gaps on turnover. Just the one cwb too. I always thought am's were better than ap's but in this formation it seems to be working better

how would you improve my shit tactic? im doing the youth academy challenge in FM21 and currently a CHP/L1 yo-yo club after 20 seasons. i've recently switched to this formation as the 4-4-2 was vulnerable to counters. this tactic seems to be more defensively sound and our latest results have indeed improved, but ultimately would like some help to me get over the hump and become mid table CHP side in the next few seasons.


individual instructions:

set every player besides the GK and my CBs to close down more, tackle harder, and mark tighter.

set FBs to cross more often as well

set wingers to get further forward and cross from byline as well

tl/dr start thinking like an actual manager, actually look at your opp reports and formations and players and devise a plan for how you will defeat each opponent individually. Think about how you can exploit their weaknesses and strengthen your strengths, even if it means using some lopsided asymmetrical formations. Try to think about the consequences of your tactical instructions. Sure for single player you can use some downloaded tactic that works because it counters the most common ai tactics but its much more fun and gets better results if you can understand and come up with ideas yourself.

Also you are playing a nu-fm version so you will need to put pressing on high

any moneyball chads here?

I'm trying to start using money ball in my fm13 save (which means i have to do it by hand as the premade data sheets out there are for later versions with stats that fm13 doesnt have like xG for example) and i've run into a problem with how substitutes affect data. It's immediatley apparent when looking at the data that substitutes put up higher numbers per 90 than starters (for good reasons obviously) but this makes it harder to statistically determine who the best performing players are.

For example lets say i want to compute percentiles for striker stats for strikers in my league, the highest scores for lets say shots on target per 90 are all sub players, with the best striker in the league falling outside the top ten (but also the highest for all first choice starter strikers in the league). How do moneyball chads deal with this when they calculate percentiles to compare players? do they omit subs from the calculation? (if so what is the cutoff?) which would cut out a whole chunk of data, or do they ignore it and leave all data in?

FBs on Au is a mistake, you can just leave them on SP or put one on ATT, opposite of your ATT W. Your BWM as part of a midfield 2 is leaving your DM overwhelmed, I'd wager. BWM goes actively hounding the ball with really aggressive presses, so if you're up against a 3-man midfield which the AI loves to use, then you'll find he's often easily bypassed and then your DM's stuck solo. You don't need a CB on Co, even with the high line. CF with PF isn't attacking enough. If you're going 4-4-2, you'll want at least one of your strikers stretching the defence and threatening to run in behind. Both are likely dropping deeper to help in the build-up, which means you've got no real way to progress the ball further up the pitch. Especially with two DMs that have no progressive passing or water carrier roles.

Think about how your attack is built. Say your GK collects the ball and rolls it out to a CB, then what? It goes into the feet of the defensive-minded DM and he does what? He's not looking to spray a ball out wide or turn and run with it, so then you need to wait for the FBs to move up the pitch or for the forwards to drop back to help collect it or your wingers. And if they're dropping back to collect it, then you're not getting the benefit of wingers stretching the play or 2 strikers stretching the gap between CBs and midfield. And if you did change those strikers to AFs so that you would stretch that gap, your midfield isn't using any roles that would exploit that space because the roles you've given are very much "stay in your half to avoid being caught on a counter"

BPD with Dribble More even if they can't use their feet is really, really strong in FM24. Really helps to find more space for progressive passes into the midfield. They don't try crazy shit like "I'm gonna skin the pitch myself", they'll just carry the ball an extra 10-15 yards into the open space, rather than play it immediately out to a fullback or a DM who's marked.

Also disagree with this, personally. Set Pieces are absolutely lethal. Corners and long throws especially. And shorter passing is absolutely fine (though probably not for a 4-4-2.

Still think the BWM is overkill if you're gonna have a DM. Try a Segundo Volante next to a DM on Support, you need someone who can progress the ball through the middle. I'd also change your defensive FB to Support and just give him personalised instructions that stop him from overlapping if that's the concern.

Yeah I'd bet then that it's a combination of limited attacking options and high tempo rushing things. I'm of the opinion that 4 attackers simply isn't enough to get any passing structure happening in and around the box. Something as simple as setting overlaps on one side would help a lot, I'd bet.

There's a weird quirk with "Distribute to Centrebacks" combined with "focus play down the left/right" where the goalkeeper refuses to distribute to the CBs but instead exclusively to the FBs, but all the players are positioned as if he's going to distribute to the CBs.

A horrible time for an injury crisis and some silly suspensions that left FF Jaro with only two natural midfielders, no natural CBs and no options off the bench except for strikers and wingers. Young Iestyn Jones stepped up from the reserves to play the CB role for tonight's game as a result.

2 goals late in the game was enough to salvage a draw for HJK, but FF Jaro didn't care because a draw was enough.

After going down to a very early goal from IFK Mariehamn, FF Jaro were forced to dig deep, work hard and if they're being entirely honest with themselves, get lucky. A penalty awarded right on the stroke of half-time was deftly put away by Jaro talisman Warren Mazibuko, maintaining his 100% penalty record on this 7th penalty of the season. And then in the 64th minute, daring CB Thiago Dromboski, fresh back from a suspension served in the final league game, rifles a shot from 30 yards. Straight into the hands of IFK's goalkeeper.... who spills it! And who else would be ready to pounce on the loose ball but that man Mazibuko once again.
