Most losses that game take in first month after release, where all fucking map was just static, and between this, invulnerable bullshit, totally fucked balance (rng core traits included) and nightmare level of difficulty in first turns bullshit players just never back.

I honestly don't think the hero aspect of Spellforce 1 was done that well. I was hoping you could opt in to a support hero that micros buffs, debuffs, heals, stuns, summons, etc. In reality if you do that you're fucked, because the game will routinely makes your hero the line holder. Plus walking across a gigantic RTS map just to talk to an NPC to do a side-quest.

Despite this the campaign and art direction was fucking great.

Make the buffs and debuffs scale significantly stronger for multiple units as opposed to an individual unit.
Make summons fill a niche lategame. Even if they're just meat shields. The fact they get 2-shot into the lategame makes them basically useless.
Combine the two - Summons + Buffs making them better for when you don't have your army.
Make the army scale better and not basically become useless outside of tower spam.

There are like 100 different things they could do honestly.

I was a fan of the originals. Didn't play this one because it looked like it was missing a ton of content from the original, i.e. races, so I waited and checked in every once in a while. It also came out during a period of extremely disappointing sequels, so I assumed it would be shit to. This is actually unironically the first time I ever heard of anyone mention "random maps". The game didn't bomb because of random maps. This just sounds like autism only 1% of the audience cares about.

The originals were basically setup in a way that implied it was 1 big gigantic world but they didn't have the resources to stream it like Dungeon Siege was at the time, so I could see that working.

There are countless indie knockoffs of command and conquer. There's even one that gets shilled here. DORF. You go to any game dev circle and there's at least 1 dude making an RTS, but it's ALWAYS command and conquer with a new coat of paint.

Every time I play one of those games there's always something missing. The mechanics are there but that's literally all there is. At that point I would rather just play an RTS from the 90s that actually had a budget.
