ehhhh i think it's super hit or miss. i think mio's real issue with retro games are the early 3D ones where the camera is actively working against you most of the time, which wouldn't be an issue. it's janky but i don't think it's super difficult to grasp, & the writing's much better. her interest in the setting/characters would make or breat it imo

The way it works is that you only progress in levels when you progress the skills you specced in, but ALL skills progressed contribute to the amount you can up a stat at level up. The skills that she's used have become her highest level skills regardless of her character creation, so they're now the best to use in combat. I personally never pick athletics or acrobatics as major or minor skills because, while I greatly value them and want to level them up ASAP, I don't want them dictating when I level up. In that sense, it's GOOD that ami has alchemy & enchant as major skills while conjuration/destruction/restoration are all misc, since she doesn't use alchemy or enchanting much at all. eventually, she might want to powerspike her character by going through a literal training arc, and it'll be much easier for her to control her level ups if she only needs to spend a minor amount in those two lower level skills to move up. Also, she DOES have long blade and marksman as minor and major skills respectively, which do contribute to her level progress. frankly, if I were to edit her character creation at all, I would've changed her sign (the mage is a little less brutal than the atronach for noobs), and swapped out light armor for unarmored. the biggest issue is that she's progressed so much without upping her endurance, since HP per level up are based on it, and they're NOT retroactive, coupled with her preference for lighter armor means she's become very squishy.

For instance, if Ami took 10 spear tranining lessons (a miscellaneous skill), she could maximize her endurance gain from a single level up without actually making any progress towards that level up. she'll want to do this eventually, since she does jack shit for endurance skills otherwise. level ups will only get harder to find the more she ups the major/minor skills she actually uses.
