So apparently OAI figured out how to 'watermark' outputs and according to them internal testing shows 99% accuracy rate. The technique, they explained, was to create a detectable token pattern throughout the text. I don't see how this is different from already known telltale signs of AI use, but they have yet to make both the watermarking and the detection tool public. The reason they're holding back is that users had expressed their intention that if their outputs were to be watermarked and competitors don't, they will switch without much hesitation.
