Seasons have existed since Diablo 2 it's basically a core of the genre you schizos. Despite the game being about "grinding a character" the game loop is actually VERY limited. It's like trying to play an MMO where you max out your character in 2 weeks and there's no raids or pvp.
Also despite the game being single player, trade/economy is a big part of the genre too, and seasons offer a reset so you don't have to deal with subhumans playing 24/7 for 5 years owning 99% of wealth.
