It leans very hard into the mythology of The Doctor as this mad cosmic figure that can make armies run and always save the day, and it really wants you to know that he's The Guy and that you should be Very Impressed with him. The Doctor has always been arrogant but he's also been prone to making mistakes, misjudging, or over-estimating himself, and during the Matt Smith era he never really felt like he lost control.Compare Tennent and Capaldi's Doctors who were also very willing to lean into their reputation and pull off some very big dramatic moves and speeches, but they also got taken to task by their Companions more readily, they took more major losses, and when they took those losses it clearly took more of a toll on them. Eccleston's Doctor was more reserved, but when he did finally open up he was either seething at the universe, screaming at a Dalek to kill itself, or bursting with joy, so you get the idea of him as a more repressed figure who's not able to fully be himself.Smith's Doctor has the same problem as Jodi's Doctor - he's always right, he's always in control, and even when he loses it doesn't hurt him for longer than it takes for the next 2-parter to wrap and then he's back on top like it was nothing. >>89412377I think he's referring to an interview Patrick Troughton did where he mentioned that trying to apply human concepts like nationality and race to Time Lords didn't really make sense and theoretically anyone could play The Doctor . I'm aware of what some of the actors have said, and the BBC were even considering casting a woman as The 5th Doctor at one point, but it's something that was never mentioned even being possible in the show itself until Capaldi's era, when The Master became Missy, and when that Gallifreyan General regenerated into a woman. Until then Time Lords couldn't regenerate into the opposite gender.
