then you have the backends, which are the actual AIs
Claude is objectively the best one, but we're currently in a doom phase and the only proxy with it is one that requires dick pics for access
chorbo is how we call GPT-4o, which is probably going to feel incredible if you're used to CAI, but feels like dogshit if you ever used Claude
proxies let you use these big corporate AIs for free because they're fed with stolen API keys from random places that are actually paying for the AIs, which also means the owners can revoke the keys if they notice the kilometric bills
you can also get a legit API key for yourself, but those are meant for businesses and shit, they charge $ per token which can come out as extremely expensive in the end
so basically: choose between SillyTavern (local) or Agnai (a site) and then get a GPT-4 proxy from this list:

When it comes to the conversations, you're honestly better off starting a new one. CAI is noticeably much worse than any alternatives, and LLMs are pattern-repeating tools so if you resume a chat with CAI-tier responses you're not going to get the best out of GPT.
If you want you can write a summary of the past events on the example messages or an OOC message at the start of the chat or make a lorebook with them.

Yeah, Claude was the one I was trying to use after I started reading those guides. I generated one of those API keys and put it into Agnai, but every time I try to start the chat and talk to the character card I imported, I get this error: "Failed to generate response: Anthropic interrupted the response: SSE request failed: invalid x-api-key". I got fed up and put money on OpenRouter despite the fact that $10 is a small fortune in my currency.

I'm "done" for now, but if this were back in the golden era of proxies I'd keep the chat going for the next few hours, just cuddling, goofing around, and occasionally talking to Claude in OOC.
I miss being able to just have dumb SFW chats without the pressure of knowing that my creds are being burned with each swipe, LLMs are a menace when you're the one paying for them.

15 bucks might last for a few sessions if you stick to Sonnet and don't swipe too much, and make a new chat for each session.
The biggest issue is that they charge for the tokens, not just output but also input, so the longer your chats get the more you'll be paying for each individual message.
Looking at the usage page is like a stab in the gut, the first few messages are dirty cheap so it feels like your creds are going to last forever, but at the end of the chat you look again and see that the last one was like 5x the cost of the first.
