it's a complicated arrangement. Back 3 years ago you could just ignore ads like many streamers did and nothing would happen. Now if you ignore ads the pre-roll will always play and you have to adjust your stream to play some ads during it if you don't want the pre-rolls.
Just install the block and be happy

I've had no problems with it ever aside from the occasional need to update the script and it's 30 seconds of 480p before swapping back to 1080. And I actually sub to streamers I like so I only ever skip prerolls or people I don't sub to.
