It's just that only AAA devs have been successful so far because they spend tens of millions of dollars marketing the game and forcing it down people's throats so that normies will play it as the new FOTM game. Without all the marketing and other social pressure to play, I don't think they would attract that many players on their own. I mean Overwatch unironically owes its massive success not to the gameplay at all but to the torrent of porn of the characters that came out when the game was released.
