Even worse is that Mint fell in love with the guy through online interactions on Minecraft and discord DMs and it turned out that she was speaking to his girlfriend the whole time, who was pretending to be him since he treated her like free slave labor and had her do all the work.

Still writers very frequently use their irl experiences as inspiration for their stories; some of them more heavy-handed than others.
