ftfy

it officially hasn't been called that in over 90 years...

I don't care what they think it is called. I still call Czechia Bohemia.

Fuck you.
>>
>>7998174
it's their country, it's their rules, so they get to call their towns and cities whatever they want to and tough shit on you if you don't like it
>>

No, suck my dick.

Do we call Germany Deutschland? No, no we do not. Instead of using the Germanic name we used the Latin Germania.

Do we call Florence Firenze? Also no. Shut up with your stupid takes.
>>

>Fuck You
>No, suck my dick.
>Shut up with your stupid takes.

If that's the best you can manage, you really shouldn't have bothered.

Facts don't care about your feelings, and the simple facts are that Istanbul was formerly known as Constantinople, and, whether you like it or not, almost nobody outside of an historical discussion of the place refers to that city by it's earlier name any more.

>I still call Czechia Bohemia.

Then you're either wilfully ignorant, or just very poorly educated.

I notice you didn't comment on the Germany/Deutschland and Florence/Firenze examples.
>>
>>8000514
that's because the Germans and Italians didn't ever make a specific public decree for their respective nation or city to be called by the particular name of their choosing in their own native language, so both names got an anglicised version that are now widely used around the world instead

whereas with Istanbul I refer you to the previous answers given as well as to >>8000504
>>
>>8001776
That is incorrect, that is not why we call them that, it's because we had contact with them in the Middle Ages, so we used old Latin maps and records to source their names despite them having different ones at them time, and even though we spoke to them and read their new names in the communication between us - we actively chose not to simply anglicise their name, but to take them from an entirely different language family.

Places that we received contact with more recently we took the modern names. Byzantium (also not a name they used for themselves - they just called themselves the Roman Empire, we took that name from the Ancient Greek colony that existed where Constantinople was) and it's capital Constantinople we knew of far back and we slightly anglicised 'Kōnstantinoupolis'; but how the fuck do you think we got Germany from Deutschland? Do they even sound remotely alike? No, because one comes from the Germanic and the other the Latin. Bohemia was what Rome named the area from the Germanic Boii tribe that occupied it, and thus recorded it on their maps and records.

České království(Czech)
Königreich Böhmen(German)
Regnum Bohemiae(Latin)

Notice how both the Germans and the English took the Latin records to refer to the place, despite the medieval Germans being right fucking next to the medieval Czechs, they took what they considered the more austere and intellectual Latin name to refer to the place.

Do the Greeks call themselves 'Greek'? Also no, they call themselves 'Hellenes', does Greece and Hellas sound alike? No. Graecia is the Roman name for Hellas, which in the countries descended from the Latin Roman Western Empire we recovered their old records/still had them, and followed the Catholic Church that still spoke in Latin.

We haven't changed it for Greece and Germany, so I am not changing it for Constantinople and Bohemia either, I continue to respect the old language more.

Suck my dick, he who knows no fucking history.

Modern architecture is so sad and soulless. This could be anywhere. Modern skyscrapers all look the same. At least in the 1920s they tried to give them some personality. Now they are all like this. Everything post ww2 is shit. I hate it.

screen dimensions are always width x height, and that image is almost 16:9 anyway, so either save it and set it to fit the screen height and it'll leave about 22 pixels blank either side, or fit it to screen width and it'll chop off 16 pixels from the top and bottom of the image.

or failing that just drag and drop the image onto yandex.com/images (because googles image search sucks massive donkey balls) and see if it finds a larger version of the image for you

Turks ruined the entire Arab world.
>>
>>8010087
Yeah like it was great before. I think the main thing is both Arabs and Turks ruined the Eastern Roman world.
>>
>>7998833
The irony is that the whole reason it's called Istanbul now is because when Turks would ask Greeks where they were going, they would never ever answer the question the name of Constantinople. Instead they would say “stin polis” (“to the city”). GREEKS were reluctant to say Constantinople, preferring instead, “the city.” The Turks simply continued to call it what greeks called it. The Turks didn't rename the city. “Istanbul” is actually just a permutation of “stin polis.” For greeks to get mad at turks over the name of the city... only brings shame to greeks. Pick your battles.
