Cloverfield actually works perfectly fine as a self-contained story about an alien. Not to mention there's an audio clip during the credits that, when reversed, claim the monster is still alive. So the possibility has always been there. All the shit online was an afterthought.That said, I have no faith in JJ's ability to meaningfully tie it all together in subsequent films.
