Is Vegas Pro still the best for creating videos or is there something better out there now?

Everything has their pros and cons. Try DaVinci Resolve which is the best free video editor there is imo, they have a paid version with more advanced features if you need that. Another good one is Premiere Pro which you can find on pretty much every piracy website.

final cut pro is (afaik) industry standard for movie editing

FCP used to be industry-standard, until Apple fucked it up in 2011 with FCPX. Industry-standard is Avid Media Composer.
