may I ask why? I've read the first two and thought they were ok
>>
>>1507219
They're great from book 4 onward. They've introduced concepts to me that have stuck with me my entire life. And they're just really god damn funny.

For example, here's an excerpt that I think about a lot. A bit of dialogue between a witch and a priest.
>And that’s what your holy men discuss, is it?

>Not usually. There is a very interesting debate raging at the moment about the nature of sin, for example.

>And what do they think? Against it, are they?

>It’s not as simple as that. It’s not a black and white issue. There are so many shades of grey.

>Nope.

>Pardon?

>There’s no greys, only white that’s got grubby. I’m surprised you don’t know that. And sin, young man, is when you treat people as things. Including yourself. That’s what sin is.

>It’s a lot more complicated than that—

>No. It ain’t. When people say things are a lot more complicated than that, they means they’re getting worried that they won’t like the truth. People as things, that’s where it starts.

>Oh, I’m sure there are worse crimes—

>But they starts with thinking about people as things.

the chromium fence by phillip k dick
didn't affect me the first time i read it but then after all the political shit in the last ten years the main character's stance and what he says became so much more significant to me.

>Aguirre the Wrath of God
i could not atch all of this and don't know why people like it, it is a badly dubbed, badly acted, 70's historical drama.

Akira. I saw the film first, but read the comic as well at the time. I was a fifteen year old constantly going in and out of hospitals and crisis centers with a dependency on prescription Xanax at way too high a dose for me, but it’s all that kept me from losing it after a life of abuse. That’s the tl;dr, anyway. It really resonated with me at the time and continues to inspire my work.

Maybe that’s dumb, but I’m greatful for it. People talk about media where they felt “seen”, and that’s what it was for me. I’ve since gotten my life back on track, and I’d love to be able to meet Otomo just so I can thank him for influencing me in such a positive way.

Post was deleted, but Discworld has a relevant quote in response for that.
>Racism was not a problem on the Discworld, because—what with trolls and dwarfs and so on—speciesism was more interesting. Black and white lived in perfect harmony and ganged up on green.

Starship Troopers, the book. I found the political philosophy and the journey of finding purpose in life and one's role in society fascinating.

Yeah starship troopers is a certified sci fi classic and a must read

thanks for the contributions

know I didn't mention it in the OP but anime series are okay too. Or maybe they aren't as impactful to anons as I expected.

In descending order of impact:
>Bojack Horseman (later seasons)
>Steins;Gate
>Angel Beats
>Fullmetal Alchemist/Brotherhood (peak shonen)
>Code Geass (mid, but peak finale)

great that you mention it
I can also highly recommend Welcome to the NHK (both book and the anime are great though the anime doesn't mention more spicy stuff like drugs and... uhh other things... but it also expands on the original quite well)
I think I watched it just at the right time in my life

>They're great from book 4 onward
I would go as far as say they get really great as far as from the 8th book - Guards! Guards!
That said the first two books are exceptional in that they don't have much of a deeper meaning to them (or at least I didn't find it).
Personally I was quite influenced by the Reaper Man but there are lots of people who say they felt the same about Small Gods.
Other books that I always felt influenced me were 1984 and The Pattern on the Stone (dunno why exactly, maybe that just read it in the right time, but it kind of got me to "get" computers and influenced my future career)

The first Persona game had a negative impact on me. It was shit, but it felt like crack, so I kept playing more and more JRPGs and they were all shit. Never touching a JRPG again

Katawa Shoujo probably had the biggest impact of any one piece of media I've seen.
I know it's kind of cliche to say, but it was the right thing at the right time for me.

Well, in addition to the obvious of making me believe in the unbreakable strength of the human spirit (row row, fight the power), it made me understand that there is an art to the "big dumb cool thing" story. You can't just throw a bunch of cool stuff on screen and let that carry you, you need to craft it in such a way to emphasize and maximize all the cool stuff that goes into it. As someone very into the art of storytelling, TTGL was a real eye opener for me.

Not to mention the typical ones, I'm not someone who plays many 'little-known' games, but during an indie promotion on Steam, I saw the demo of this game... Lorn's Lure.
I remember that they gave stickers for each demo played, and although my goal was to play the minimum time required, I ended up playing it all night. Despite being short, I explored every inch of the walls.
When I was young, I used to let myself die in COD just to replay the cutscenes - this felt similar.

I could also mention Kenshi, but it's a love-hate relationship, although it was definitely a before and after when it comes to management games.

I totally get that. Even though I was born in 2003, the economic situation wasn't favorable during my childhood. Despite that, I had a computer that could run Half-Life 1, Doom 3, Delta Force, and Unreal Tournament. Unfortunately, later I turned into an xboxtard.
