Early on most episodes didn't have a laugh track during serious scenes, way less usage as the seasons went on, and by I think season 11 they got rid of the laugh track completely.

HBO shows that are still discussed tend to have great acting & individual scenes, but are lacking in overall structure and will have unnecessary sex scenes and pet political topics used in throwaway scenes. With that being said, True Detective Season 1 is the single best piece of television I have ever seen.
