I think the problem that the people in the program face is that they are so alien in their thinking, that even they have no idea.I imagine we know their capabilities, roughly at least to know they could wipe the whole planet out without much difficulty. They could create a genetic virus, slowly raise the temperature of our planet via radiation and induce massive die off. But they don't. They don't help us morally, they're neither malevolent, benevolent but for some reason interact with us. Chaotic almost random and every encounter that follows a pattern in any way is valuable.
