Did Biblical people pray and meditate differently than we do today? Does anyone know about the techniques they used?

Absolutely. People —even the common folk— prayed a lot longer and more intently. There was much more mental inner life, as you'd expect in a world without ubiquitous mass media to distract everyone.There were still distractions of course but they revolved around social life.
