They are a type of witch, Navajo or other Native American. Their form of sorcery comes from when a bunch of medicine men got annoyed at the long time it took to get their powers, so they consulted with evil spirits on a faster way, these formed a type of black magic which would be learnt rather quickly but it had to be done by doing something awful to someone you love and care about, (think rape) and then killing them in a sacrifice. This is part of the initiation into becoming a skinwalker. They can turn into animals namely, and there are western versions of something similar like wargs of Norse mythology. They also are attracted to mentions or thoughts about them because they can sense it in the astral or something, or are otherwise empowered by knowledge of them, which is why Navajo like to keep them a secret.
