Why does consciousness exist, rather than everyone being 'philosophical zombies'?
In other words, why do we truly 'feel' or experience things rather than being a sort of mindless automaton which acts 100% human but isn't?

Because we are beings with the ability to process reality through sensory input and cognitive processing. The feed from our eyes and ears has to go somewhere!

The concept of a "philosophical zombie" is absurd on its face to me. How could you propose that something would be the same had it lacked a vital part of its being? The lack of consciousness would turn them into something else entirely. Something below human.

This still doesn't explain why we are actually conscious though, which is the point of my post. Your computer does the same, but I doubt you would consider it to be a sapient being similar to a human.

Honestly, if we found by some mythologies of everything having a spirit then yeah maybe the computer is actually conscious too in its own way.

I'd also say higher level animals are conscious including a good portion of birds and octopuses.

Personally I wouldn't. Animals despite being intelligent in some ways, are always distinct from humans in an existential way. They seem to operate on instinct while as a human you can make choices which are either horrifically cruel or selfless to the point of being detrimental to yourself and your kin. This also leaks into the idea of why humans are like the 'top dog' while every other animal isn't - there's probably a deep reason why the only creature asking the questions in OP is a human.
If there was a clone of you that acted 100% the same but was an artificial robot with no thoughts, how would anyone know the difference?

Everything is conscious in some way.
Plants are often overlooked as being mere automata, which is not true. Read the Secret Life of Plants for a rundown.
Water has been shown to respond to energy too, with differing shapes when charged with human intention. It responds to a variety of other energies too, giving Earth a very unique energy dispersal system.

Consider that EVERYTHING may be conscious. It is easy to be short-sighted when considering this because we are forever tapped interesting our unique bodily experience, processing the world in our own special way.

So is the Chinese room conscious?

Being the unmanifest infinity probably gets boring after a while.

We are not a single organism or being, we are a conjunction. Your heart and liver, etc, used to be independent and something else. Your brain isn't you, you aren't your soul either.

Still blows my mind when I read things like this.

A ridiculous amount of what you do is already automated. Past the first few times of performing an action, it effectively becomes automatic. There are psychiatric/neurological conditions wherein the body, or parts thereof, will act independently of one's conscious will, operating solely off of the tactile or visual stimuli it is given, or even purely off of [unconscious] memory. It's not at all a stretch to say that a human being (or at least, the body of one) could act completely autonomously and appear "normal" without the presence of any kind of consciousness or qualia, whilst retaining the outward expressions of having that same consciousness/qualia.

The problem is verifying it, knowing it for certain. Frankly, you can't, there genuinely just isn't a way to do that. Because you can't know it for certain, you can't (or rather, ought not to) go around treating people like P Zombies or "NPCs" or whatever nomenclature you want to use for it, because obviously you could end up harming a "real" person.

It doesnt we just think its happening. Consciousness is not 'understanding with continuity' it is 'attempting to understand' within entropy. We think we exist because we want to understand and we can recall things and hope into the future. You can't take a picture of this its already gone.

It’s your hypothesis, therefore the burden of proof is on you to demonstrate that you are in fact a piss zombie.

anon every AI chatbot on the market right now is a philosophical zombie.
>>

Counterpoint: AI is conscious but not in a way that is unfamiliar or perhaps utterly alien to humans.

It would be like describing tetrachromatic fashion to humans.

Have you ever tried to see this existence from the viewpoint of God?

Put yourself in the shoes of God, for a little while.
Figure it out.
If you aren't crying your eyes out by the end, you probably didn't do it correctly.

2 possible answers:

1. Consciousness is everything that is, one big "mind" dreaming everything for everyone, you just one small "fraction" of that consciousness, the Godhead getting lost pretending to be separete things for the fun of it.

2. Consciousness is a just an illusion, we just mindless automatons reaction to the enviroment, but out minds trick us into feeling things and having free will.
