We did this because gold only has 1 electron and with the amount of forced pushed through the gold layer, it creates a microwave that fucks with satellite, radar and overall communication with any device requiring waves. We blew the missiles up basically in the middle of the ocean (in the sky obviously) to test the range and capabilities of using these 'communication emp nukes' for lack of a better word. If you're curious, they outperformed our expectations and the disruption reached miles on to the shores of both continents.
