Although, on my end the smells aren't reliably associated with literal fog. Literal fog just strengthens the horrible smells a lot because humid air carries many sorts of molecules more easily. So, if you ask me, lots of places have had horrible air for a while now due to unchecked and unidentified sources of air pollution, and boomers are just finally noticing it now since their covid-nose is wearing off and the high humidity is enhancing their sense of smell. Though I do live near a military base, so it's possible that my area was just a testing ground for something that is only now being used more widely.
