Where can I read about the origins of the 72 Goetic demons? I know some are pagan deities, some are Jewish demons, etc. but I want to read more about them. Are there any academic books or articles about their origins/history?

Just by looking at the names theres obvious Arabic/Persian ones. Just seemes like a accumulation of Demons from the general Abrahamic Magian tradition at the time - wrapped up in a book for western medieval christians to work with. The Picatrix and its origins is somewhat similar.

Occult knowledge and sciences from the orient was prized over by westerners at the time. Probaly brought over by traders, merchants or members of orders and secret societies for other members to work with and eventually build upon Aquanis worked with the works of a arabic philosopher and Ficino translated Hermes and Plato works imported from the orient. Something like the internet didnt exist back then so knowledge from anywhere was highly valued, especially if its from a culture and religion not too different from your own.

What binded both the east and western world at the time was the Greco Roman tradition along with the Abrahamic faiths. The Greeks were already translating and building upon old oreintal traditions during late antiquity Alexandria and thats the birth of the Hermetic tradition for example. The Muslims at the time were just continuing that work and eventually the renaissance/enlightment era westerners.

>The Lemegeton - The Little Key of Solomon - is the name of a family of seventeenth and eighteenth-century manuscripts inspired by Johannes Weyer's Pseudomonarchia on the one hand, and Reginald Scot's Discoverie of Witchcraft on the other, drawing upon Agrippa and Peter of Abano along the way. Some of these texts were compiled into the book we now know so well by Mathers and Crowley, the basis for magical thought and practice around the world.

>Our series will draw upon various Early Modern sources and related texts, not to establish a definitive text - there is just no such thing - but to explore it as a canon of magical literature made by a subculture relating to the religious radicalism and controversy of the time, and the 'Hermetic Enlightenment'.

>Our first volume pulls together a number of versions of the Ars Goetia, with a variety of extracts from source texts that ground the canon in their time and place, and explore the different ways people have interacted with the concepts and symbols, prior to the Occult Revival of the nineteenth century and the text's codification in its first modern published edition.
