The original cult (The Process Church Of The Final Judgement) was a "squirrel" splinter group founded by an ex-Scientologist couple who took Hubbard's bullshit as a starting point, and piled their own hodgepodge of new age, Christian and Luciferian beliefs on top. The group fractured in the early 1980s when the co founder got sick of her exes Satanic schtick and left with most of the remaining members to form a new age Christian sect under a new name.I think the failed attempt by Genesis P-Orridge and Skinny Puppy to hijack the name and symbols of the defunct cult in the mid 1990s is more interesting than the original cult itself. After getting booted from his own cult (Thee Temple Ov Psychick Youth), Genesis P-Orridge somehow got Skinny Puppy on board with resurrecting the dormant cult as an art collective/ironic faux religious movement built around a concept album from Skinny Puppy. Skinny Puppy had just signed to Rick Rubin's American Recordings record label and moved into Rubin's house in Los Angeles with P-Orridge to record the album. To call the recording of the album cursed is an understatement. During the making of the album they experienced the Northridge earthquake, Rick Rubin's house caught on fire seriously injuring P-Orridge who had to jump out of a window to escape, and Cevin Key seriously injured his back while filming the parking lot brawl scene in The Doom Generation. Rubin/American Recordings whittled their three album contract down to one. All three members of the band were full blown addicts by this point and the infighting was bad enough that Ogre (vocals) quit the band. The remaining members (Key and Goettel) moved back to Canada to try and salvage the album but Goettel ended up dying from an overdose forcing Key to finish the album by himself. She clearly saw herself as divine and he was all about the edgy satanic shit. That is why you see an incoherent mash up of Christian and Satanic iconography in photographs of their altars until their personal relationship dissolved.
